Review AFL Round 3 autopsy - Geelong defeats Carlton by 16 points

Good point, but Blitz isn't really ready to be a no. 1 ruck yet. West/HMac will fill that role, and as much as I've liked his contributions so far he still has a bit of a way to go in terms of catching those two. Effort-wise that's a fair call but when HMac returns we'll need to get him up and going, which could unfortunately mean some rest for Blicavs.

Doesn't need to catch either IMO

A #2 ruck who is perfectly suited to the modern game.

As a ruck I can see Vardy edging him out, but who knows by then he might hold his place on a wing, with his progress who knows where he will be in a month.

People getting a bit carried away with Blicavs, he was serviceable but he did play on Hampson and Rowe. He will get destroyed next week. We don't need a guy running up and down the wings we need a big ruck to give us better clearance stats and give away less goals at stoppages.

The injury to Varcoe is worrying, with guys like Murdoch, Smedts and Caddy not doing a whole heap our depth is going to get tested.

Real happy with Stokes being used as a link up man around the ground instead of small forward, he has really stepped up so far this year.

Motlop has improved on his average preseason form, just needs to kick more goals.

Our forward pressure is pretty terrible, I don't know what the deal is with Hawkins and Pods but in the first half they really didn't get to enough contests and Carlton got easy run from defence. Chappy was ordinary as well, as a forward he has to put on more pressure and take marks not get cheapies in defence.

It's nice that we keep winning but lets not get ahead of ourselves, we have only just beaten an under done hawthorn, north and carlton.

The main reason why people are getting carried away is that he is a big guy, without any real footy experience, playing in the seniors. Don't you think that shows some
significant promise?

A couple of possessions last night reminded me that he not only has a great grasp on the game, his skills are quite good also. He did go into traffic to pick up a loose ball that
if he turned it over, we would have had a ball straight back into the back 50, more so, we were under significant pressure at the time, to keep a cool head and handball out of
congestion to a free player where we cleared the ball. The second one was a loose ball pickup on the HFF, where he kicked an opposite foot pass in the perfect position, for a pick up and goal by T Hunt.

He does outjump his opponents, just needs to ruck consistently.

However, there is so much upside to a guy who can run all day and when he gets it make good decisions under pressure. Blicavs has it and although not a game changing player as yet, I think he will be in the future.

Unless Brown plays forward and Pods had a break.
Would rather see Walker tried as a forward then Brown. Walkers development has been put on hold for nearly a year now because we needed a ruck fill in. Now with Blicavs clearly taking that spot its time to put Walker forward and see what he can do.

Why would you give Pods a break for either Brown or Walker v Sydney?
I think we should pick our best side, and that means Pods by miles.
The MC may think Brown in defence is an option for team requirements v Sydney.

The glass is half full, Cynical, it is definitely half full.

Sure, we'd all naturally prefer it three quarters full or more, but what's really exciting is knowing that we can not be any more vulnerable than we are right now. And that later in the season, when all our outs are ins again, and the new blood has settled and are all playing the game as it should be played, that damn glass may well be bucket sized and it will still be overflowing.

Cost us a certain goal that prick.

Has Bosk, HP or TMM checked in to day at all... just curious...

Unless Brown plays forward and Pods had a break.

Perhaps. I think that's fraught with danger too. Pods' value to the team has been underrated this year and I wouldn't want to be giving him a break against one of the best defences in the comp. If we were going to give Brown a go up forward, I'd suggest it should be with Pods and Hawkins. As soon as you remove Pods from the formula, it gives the Swans the green light to shift basically all their attention to Hawkins.

If we'd done it last night, for example, Henderson could have gone forward for them and it could have been a very different game. Pods has shown that he is more than capable of kicking half a dozen goals in any game and teams set up for him accordingly, or they pay the price.

Injured isn't he?

Yep, Walker will be out indefinitely.

Still a bit concerned about our clearance work. Carlton got on top there on way too many occasions and in fact kicked three goals in forward pocket from direct clearance around the stoppages. We need something to change and I don't know if its tactical, personnel or setup. I would love Hmac in side right now as this would help enormously, but that is a month away still.

Good footy so far, lots of hard footy so far, just need to solidify some of the clearance work and minimise turnovers.

its a deliberate tactic I think. To concede clearances and stack the backline, as we are scoring more goals by running off the backline than centre clearances.
The biggest positive for mine (apart from winning of course) is that all our veterans had quiet games (apart from Taylor and enright) and we still won. Taylor Hunt BOG, motlop and Bundy were in our best, and to a lesser degree Smedts who still needs to sort his goal kicking. Think we have turned the corner development wise. It's why we have improved on last year so far

Murdoch was absolutely pedestrian last night. Needs to find some leather in the VFL.

And we will get by winning games getting destroyed in the clearances at this time of year, but it must be fixed before September. Hasn't helped that we have had Kelly missing a lot of footy, SJ out, Corey playing off half back and GHS not getting a go. But we really do need a ruckman that takes charge at stoppages and who imposes himself after the ball hits the ground.

Should also say that the decision to leave Brown out was vindicated and ended up being a masterstroke when Kreuzer went down. Lonergan and Taylor were more than enough, with Malthouse unwilling to roll the dice with Henderson up forward. Harry still had ample opportunity to make them look silly by getting forward and kicking goals.

I just really hope it's understood that the Carlton wasn't a good match-up for Brown and he's not stamped as 'not to play AFL, except in an emergency' just yet.

We have Sydney, Bulldogs and Richmond the next 3 weeks. None of them have multiple key forwards and Rivers should be available post that.

This week will be the test. Depends what they want to do against Goodes I guess. If they want Lonners or Harry on him when he is deep forward they will need to play the third tall as the Swans have Reid and are playing both Mumford and Pyke so one of them will be forward for the majority of the game. If he doesn't play this week, I'd say the papers were stamped when Scott subbed him off for that marshmallow effort on Tarrant.

Bartel and Johnson had quiet games? Fair go!
And Smedts had 7 touches, including a scunged gimme goal.

Not sure how Motlop got in our best. Yes, he gets a lot of touches but he wastes the ball a lot of the time he gets it. His run and carry looks great but it is rare that he is does something positive with it. He misses a lot of targets and can't kick goals. He is a frustrating player to watch. He tries to do too much but can't pull it off like Stevie J does.

Blicavs is playing really well but he isn't anywhere near best 22 when we have another ruck fit.

He is showing enough that in a couple of years he could be genuine best 22 without needing to play ruck.

He's got it in him. He was clinical with his finishing early last year. I agree it's frustrating when he is just 'good', when if he'd been a bit better with his finishing, it could have been a three Brownlow vote performance (last week was a prime example), but you've got to back him in. Kicked a ripper to seal it last night, after all. Like Johnson, I'd say the good almost always outweighs the bad.

It was a bit disappointing that we had a couple of chances early in the fourth quarter to slam the door and weren't able to do it, but besides that and the first half of the second quarter, I thought we were very good.

Don't think so, as when we start winning clearances we start dominating. When we start losing clearances and stoppage work we start getting scored against....those forward pocket goals where ridiculous, same play three times.

Am just concerned that against stoppage specialists in the swans with big body ruckmen on a small ground, we will be in for a shock unless we really lift.

However, good game, lived Hunts output and Motkop is becoming a consistent performer.

Out goes Trav, and in comes Kel.

Maybe GHS is worth a run against swans as well.
