2022 & 2023 GF similarities

The phrase “sweet sixteen” was applied in the coverage of both victories - Geelong for their consecutive wins and Collingwood for their cup count.

For the first time in seventy years both teams won their first flag outside the odd/even numbering they had become accustomed to. Since 1952 the Cat flags were in 1963, 2007, 2009 and 2011 and Collingwood’s since 1953 were in 1958, 1990 and 2010.

Both victories were against relocated/merged foundation VFL teams.

Edit:

More connections.

Both coaches were Brisbane players.

Norm Smith winner was an import. Also both recent arrivals: Smith in his second season for Geelong and Hill in his first for Collingwood.

With Stengle and Hill both teams had their highest scorer kick four goals and they were also players in their first season at their club.

The two players who wore #46 (Blicavs and Cox) had very unorthodox pathways to the AFL.
Both teams started the next season with two losses …

Wasn't that 2009? Meatloaf? I remember 2011 being a nice but overcast day
2009 was a wet one. There was brief periods of rain in that game. The game remembered for its infamous entertainment than the actual game which was good for at least 3 quarters then the Cats pulled away as in 1937.

🧐🤯
Tom, F-yeah! is an anagram of Tom Hafey and is coincidentally precisely what the fans used to say when he crashed through packs.
Damn’d Chair Hawk is an anagram of Damien Hardwick, who enjoys sitting on chairs and also played numerous times against Hawthorn.

Essendon honoured the 40 year anniversary of the 1984 Grand Final today and the margin was identical (24 points) and the final scores for both teams almost identical to that day (107-83 today compared to 105-81 forty years ago)
But where does it rank on the list of 40th anniversary grand final replays?

EDIT: Collingwood played a non-Victorian team debuting in 1986 (West Coast 2018 and Brisbane 2023) and both winners started the following seasons 0-1.

Fremantle have scored 2.2 at Quarter Time in 4 out of 5 games this season

The odd game out is the Round 2 game against North Melbourne... in which they were 2.1 at Quarter Time
Must be a WA thing.

2023 West Coast

Rd 6 v Port Adelaide, qtr time 2.3
Rd 7 v Carlton, qtr time 2.3
Rd 8 v Richmond, qtr time 2.3

Five games in a row

if you include Rd 2 GWS and Rd 11 Essendon, seven occurrences in ten games.

In the R6 2024 game between Carlton and GWS both teams had three players who kicked three goals: Curnow, McKay & De Koning for the Blues and Hogan, Kelly & Riccardi for the Giants.

Surely this is unique?

Also the game was decided by approximately three goals - nineteen points.

All the GWS players kicked their three majors without kicking a behind yet none of the Carlton players kicked three straight.
