- In short: A technical issue is being blamed for visas issued to 149 people released from immigration detention being invalid
- The federal government said the issue was discovered over the weekend and quickly rectified.
- What's next? Some of the group have been arrested in recent months for breaching visa conditions, and may now escape conviction as a result of the visas being invalid.
it was a technical issue that had been on the Commonwealth law books for some time.
"This is an issue that actually dates back more than a decade to the creation of the visa class back in 2013," Mr Giles said.
So it's an issue that was never spotted by anyone - not even the infallible PETER DUTTON (Ex cop and Gold Coast property developer) - for a decade or more."There's been no lapse in constant monitoring of this cohort as a result of this technical issue."
Now rectified.
Monitoring was never interrupted.
Not clear if affects prosecution or other consequences for Visa breaches.
