Certified Legendary Thread Convicted Rapist: Jarryd Hayne - Fumbling and Quitting the Lifelong Dreams ™

The first time he fumbles in pads his NFL dream will be over.

Unfortunately.

I don't think it's that simple JD. I recall Matt McBriar (initially Dallas punter) who botched up not one but tWO punts in his first game (reading it from article) that Parcells was ready to slip him a pink ticket… well, to use Briars words, he was "skating in very thin him ice" but Briar made adjustments and won over Parcells who was HC at the time. McBriar actually got an invited to the 2006 Pro-Bowl, earning a second team All-Pro honours same year, his third season and Parcell's last as the Cowboys HC. I think the players attitude goes a LONG WAY in making it in this league. Hines Ward is another brimming example.

The big difference is McBriar had college experience.

A punter is a more specialised skill than being a running back too so there's a lot less competition.

I was coming from the angle of 'first impression mistakes occurred twice' from a more experienced campaigner like McBriar who plays a specialist position so the leeway is less. Hayne can still get a break if he is given the opportunity and makes it happen on first impression… that will not only impress his evaluators to grant him a practise squad spot for starters and that's all I think Hayne is seeking at this stage.

It's hard if you don't have game film to prove your credentials. Someone like Hayne needs to be pretty well perfect in any tryout.

I remain skeptical but good luck to him if this is his dream.

Game film? His NRL cred gets him a pass ticket. Like any RB who hopes to break into the NFL… needs to prove his nous on the practise field. I think it's up to each evaluator to see how they can shape his technique and over time, it'll all come together. I wish him nothing but the best. But in saying that.. he'll have the advantage of having a more relaxed attitude compared to the kids who have the pressure of college experience to not make rookie mistakes themselves.

Just reported on the news......Detroit Lions are prepared to sign Jarryd Hayne.
I bet they don't.

They have no reason to give him a contract now.

When asked about it at a press conference (a clip was shown on ABC News 24 last night) Jim Caldwell was as non-committal about signing Hayne as he possibly could be. Australian media getting ahead of themselves? Probably.

Its what the Australian media is good at.

They say "Hayne about to sign a contract" - To the average aussie that sounds like hes in the starting lineup. But to us on here who follow the sport we all know how the game works and far away he actually is.

He's obviously still miles away - but he's already gone past where I thought he would. As I said in this thread, I didn't think being an Australian rugby league player was going to get him more interest than the thousands of talented college players that miss out.

But just in stirring up some interest I think he's achieved something.

I can't see why he can not make it and get onto a Roster. He is quick and has good hands.Just has to learn the game which I'm sure he would have been doing over there with a lot of video and training.Good luck to him for having the balls and giving it a go.Atleast he will never have any regrets and if he does make it the $$$ will roll in.

Any position where he can run the ball, it's possible if everything falls into place.

But it's complex, learning the calls, the 'routes' and general plays - very difficult.

None of us here are saying he cant make it.

Its more the point that the general Australian public shows a clear lack of understanding about how the game works off the field in regards to practice squads and depth charts of teams etc etc. If he does succeed in the future then congrats for going out on a massive risk and achieving what you wanted to achieve.

But we all know he has a long road ahead before we start seeing something worth really reporting about.

Most of us applaud Hayne having a go but he needs to add a fair few strings to his bow to make it in the US. Put simply, the calibre of athlete is considerably better in the US than here. Also, if he plans on becoming a RB, he's going to need to learn blitz pick-ups and how to decipher NFL verbiage.

Personally, I hope he makes it I just don't think it's as easy as you, he or the media have people believe.
