So explain George Burbury then. Upgraded from the rookie list this year. Breaks his jaw in the pre-season. Comes back in Round 3 and plays the next 5 games. Gets injured, doesn't play at either level for the rest of the season, and is then cut.

(Please correct me if any of that is wrong).

Burbs came back from his broken jaw and played a few games
Unfortunately for him he never nailed his chance,
He made quiet a few clangers, missing easy marks and goals.
He was delisted because he was deemed not good enough and other players went past him.
Not discarded just because he was injured.

NAB Challenge Round 1, Menzel plays a half of footy, booting 3 goals.

NAB Challenge Round 2, Menzel plays three quarters of footy, booting 5 goals.

NAB Challenge Round 3, vs Carlton (Troy), Menzel plays a full game & kicks 10 goals.

I read too much bickering about the club holding onto injured players.
Mostly it's people using hindsight to vent frustration for our decline.
Personally I am proud how the club goes about it.
That we don't just discard players who have put their bodies on the line.
When Egan did his ankle the specialist knew that his playing career was over.
Still he would have told him that there was a slim chance he may make it back.
The club supports the player and gives him time to give it is best shot.
Menzel Cowan Vardy can all recover from their injuries and play again.
Allowing time to heal is better than rushing back players and exacerbating injuries.
This approach also allows the player to reconcile his fate in due course.
The player feels valued and will retire with no regrets or bitterness.
Other player see the rehab struggle and this reminds them daily to stay focused
Not to waste their opportunity or to quibble over less important matters.
They also know as Geelong players they will be looked after not discarded.
This how camaraderie and loyalty is built. It is what make GFC strong and respected.
Without loyalty players leave for money. Why stay if you can get a better deal elsewhere.
We supporters invest our time, money and emotion into the club and players.
I don't want to support a heartless club that tells an injured player
Sorry kid the doc says it over. We're unplugging the life support..... NEXT!!!

Yes. In fact, Egan had such little bitterness that he is now suing the club doctor.

There are only 4 things that make me feel a bit sad when I watch highlights.
One is watching Matty Egan run around and smash forwards in 2007, another is watching Gazza carve up opposition midfields circa 2007-2010, the third is when I watch 2007 highlights with Nath Ablett and remember he had only played ~20 games.
The last is this bloke.
He would have been a legitimate star of the comp right now, 90-110 games, likely pushing 45-50 goals a year and dominating for us.
Sigh...
I have no doubt that IF he can get his knees right he could come back and play near that level again, his strengths were things like his footy brain, his natural talent, so hopefully the injuries don't hamper his footy too much.
Beautifully described. The Nathan Ablett story is so exasperating, he did cost us 08, I swear it.
I have a few other saddeners though, should I or not?
*Watching Paul Lynch in 97 starring then tearing his hammy again
*Watching Barry Stoneham on the bench in the finals series as a non player, when he was so needed out there.
That'll do, but they were tragic and super talents

Saw Menz smashing out some laps around KP Sat arvo. I for one am wishing him the best of luck for this pre season.
He deserves to make a comeback and finish his career on his own terms, doesn't he? Nobody can doubt his commitment to getting himself right to play- it's just his knees have so far disagreed with the rest of him. :(

You may be safer sticking with the big kid Jansen.

I think that he will play a few games in 2015. He has the body that is ready to go but will just need to develop endurance. He will need it carrying all that meat around.

I think all of the Geelong supporters on this forum would love to see him ripping it up out there. But Dan's history of set backs has forced lot of us not stake too much on a return. It has been too painful already.

At the end of the day, footy clubs preach loyalty but show none in return. Burbury is the prime example. It is a business. They ACT loyal with the likes of Menzel and Egan, but i can promise you if Menzel hadnt shown such abundant talent, he wouldnt be on the list. Its that simple. Loyalty comes to players that are talented.

I'm worried about having too many main favourites because my main two are, and always will be, Wojcinski & Menzel (both done knees...) so I'm making Jansen my third but am very scared D:

That is easily fixed.
Make Sam Mitchell of Hawthorn your favorite player.

Players do the same. Ablett made comments when it was first made known that GC were pursuing him that he was a Geelong supporter as a kid, grew up in the town and he loved the club. We all know how that rolled out. He was not the first AFL player to do that and will certainly not be the last. All concerned are out to primarily look after the interests of themselves/club that they represent/player that they represent.
In a professional game I don't know why we should expect any thing else.

exactly. I can tell you that jnr said words to the effect of " i remember how the club treated snr at the end." Jnr knew the score - that they showed him so much love because of his onfield output - not because of who he is as a person or any other reason. Id do the same - take the money.

Paul Lynch, wow, so talented and so unlucky...

Yes, that is all rather curious, isn't it?

True. They must really rate Cowan. Will be very interesting to see how he goes if he ever gets on the park. We should expect big things, given the faith they have shown in him (whilst others have been moved on).

Jason Snell if you can remember him playing was another very talented footballer. Very similar to Menzel in many ways because he actually played much taller than what he was. His marking ability was exceptional and by the time he finally consolidated himself in the team and notched up 45-50 games, he was beginning to worry defenders as he started winning more of the footy as well. Only 23 years of age when he snapped the ankles and never played again.

Could have turned out to be a genuine star but we'll never know with him.

Who have the cats been disloyal to?

Yes, horrific injury. Similar player to Menzel, but I personally remember him as more of a Chappy type. So unlucky to also miss out on being involved in our golden era.
