Teams Detroit Lions - Honolulu Blue

Moore has looked sharp in training camp. He's reading the defenses well, making accurate throws, and most importantly, showcasing significantly more arm strength than he did as a rookie.

I can smell the fear ;)

You definitely just wrote that yourself and put it in quotes
Actually, there were 3 articles about it yesterday in Detroit news.
The 2 I bothered to read were saying Moore is competing head to head with Hill.

Thoughts

1. Reggie Bush will be hard to gauge, 1 play he'll do something great and get a 1st down out of nothing. The next he'll try too hard and lose yards. Not the sort of player I'd want in my team, sure, he's entertaining, but he'll stall drives and cost wins as well.

2. Ansah has great reflexes, God. That pick 6 makes me think at the very least he'll be a swat machine. Hopefully he can develop even more and become a sack machine too..................Ok, I take that back, he'll be something amazing, JJ Watt amazing, broke by the blocker easily there on the draw play and took down the RB in the backfield.... 5min into the 1st pre-season game and I think I just found who's going to win DROY.

3. Detroit will never win anything with Stafford as QB unless he learns to go through his reads. In his 2 series, he only got to his 2nd read once. Never went to his 3rd read. If he had receivers like that of the 49ers. He'd have already have become another 1st overall pick bust. He better pray Megatron never retires, because if he does. Stafford is ****ed.

4. Detroit need to get away from their zone defences. They're like the Adelaide 07-11 zone, just filling space and any decent team can just pick it apart all day every day if they desired. All of Sanchez's big plays have came from the receivers being wide open. Colt McCoy would look like an All-pro against that defence.

5. Don't like Hill either. Once he makes up his mind, there's no changing it. Some plays pressure comes, yet he'll dance around in the pocket to try and find a pass (when he should scramble) only to get sacked. Others that same pressure will come and he'll scramble instantly. He takes on cornerbacks when he shouldn't be. That TD drive of his, his 2 big completions were taking a high risk and the receiver making huge plays against an inexperienced CB. If that was Samuel or Revis or someone like that, New York is up 14-10, not down 7-17...... Lol, then the next drive when he goes through his reads, he overthrows the ball every time.

6. I do not understand the point of squib kicking it. Look at the penetration your Kicker has had so far! Putting it out the back of the endzone would be a higher percentage play than actually letting them return it!

7. Schwartz really needs to get discipline into this team! That horse collar tackle looked to hurt Griffin. Need to get that s**t out of the game.

8. Lions have a good DL with good coaching. The stunts are bamboozling the Jets OL.

9. The trick shot kicker is worth having on 1 condition, your punter can kick off well. This guy is making 50 yard field goals when shanking them. But his kickoffs are mediocre at best. If this guy is kicking off, you're losing the field position battle more times than not and that is something you do not want.

Kellen Watch:
3, 10:19 - 3rd & 3 - OL didn't pick up the blitz, had to dispatch of it fast, went to the only option ready, ball floated a little. Broken up - Did all he could do in the circumstances, though, more zip would've led to a completion. Probably not a 1st down though.

3, 8:55 - 3rd & 5 - Veteren like poise. No one open, but after rolling out to his left, didn't even bother looking behind himself as it's moronic to throw across your body. Too bad no one was open. Put it where the defender physically couldn't get it, while giving the receiver a slight chance. Cant ask for much more from Moore in a situation like that. Turnovers lose teams games and avoiding them are critical. Good work.

3, 4:51 - 1st & 10 - Good movement in the pocket and great awareness, but a horrendous pass, too slow, lucky it wasn't picked off.

3, 4:48 - 2nd & 10 - Great decision, below average pass, but still should've been caught. Fully on the receiver (even if it were 2 inches down and to the left of perfect).

3, 4:44 - 3rd & 10 - Perfection if I've ever seen it. OL let the blitz get straight to Moore, and Kellen just throws it out of bounds near a receiver without risking the turnover. If that was Sanchez, he's poleaxed, if that's Manning, he's trying to go to his knees opening up a shot on the neck. To use his mind that quickly to ensure no lose of yardage is great.

3, 3:37 - 2nd & 8 - That was Robert Griffin like. Using his feet to make the defender hesitate then just scramble for a few yards. Efficient.

3, 3:02 - 3rd & 6 - Taking what the defence gives you and the ball had some great zip on it (more than I've seen from Hill so far this game...).

4, 15:00 - 1st & 10 - Great pass to his receiver in stride who just kept going for a big game. 1 foot to the left, probably a 5 yard gain with the receiver losing balance, 1 foot to the right and it's broken up. Best pass from a Lion QB today (2nd best behind a McElroy pass that was dropped).

4, 14:06 - 2nd & 9 - Nice quick route and throw, perfect play (not sure about the play calling though, but the aim was accomplished to perfection).

4, 13:31 - 3rd & 2 - Once again, did the goal of the play to perfection, but probably a bad play call. any lower and it's in the turf, any higher and the receiver is in a position to be destroyed by the defender. Best result possible (though, if the receiver could get that extra inch and get a 1st down, it would've been better).

4, 11:55 - 2nd & 4 - Quick accurate pass to get the first down. Tom Brady would be happy with a pass like that.

4, 11:00 - 1st & 25 - Centre ****s up, Moore dives on it to keep protection. Great mind there. I've seen some QBs try and pick it up and try and make a play leading to disaster. Great high percentage play there.

4, 10:27 - 2nd & 28 - Not liking this play calling. It's just to get the easy yards. Another play executed as planned, too bad it was a s**t call.

4, 9:53 - 3rd & 20 - OL was horrendous there, at least get a chip block in on the screen call!!! But Moore was simply amazing there, lobbed it over the rush who were right in his face, into an in stride running back. ONLY, for the RB to drop the ****ing thing. 3 OL out in front, that drop cost at least a 1st down, probably a TD.

4, 6:50 - 2nd & 9 - Is this how Jet fans felt with s**t-enhimer? Pathetic play calling. Lets just call a play designed to drop the ball off to the Tight end in the flat instantly. Moore did all that was asked of him, but sheesh, ask for more! He can deliver....

4, 5:51 - 3rd & 11 - Slighty overthrew, 10 inches shorter and 3 inches lower and that would've been the best throw of the night by any QB. Could've been better, but it did show us that he has more power than this time last year.....

4, 5:44 - 3rd & 6 - Hopefully Kellen gets dragged soon, pausing every few seconds to write up after each play is pissing me off when he makes the throw perfect as the play is designed, but the play-call is horrendous. Yes lets throw a quick slant when you need 6 yards. 3? yes, 4? maybe, 5 or more? ONLY if there's loose coverage .

Hooray, dragged.
Overall, I'll say he went a 5/10 - Sure, he did everything asked of him, but my god, he wasn't given the opportunity to show the public what he's capable of and by all reports, had shown in training camp. Obviously the #3 in Detroit, but if he can make the 53 man roster this year, he might very well be the #2 next year with this improvement....

Couldn't disagree more re: Reggie - The bloke looks like he'll be going 1000% this year, and the only thing holding him back output wise is the team (Up to his maximum of course).

Obv. disagree re:Hill :p They only call short slants to Moore for a reason btw ;)

But agree, Ansah will be a beast

This match (Packers vs Lions) is probably a defining moment in the season for us. We win here, and I got a feeling we could do serious damage this season. We win here, and everyone will know that the Lions are a legitimate team this year, there will be no doubt. We'll see, but I believe in this team, and if we stay focused, play our natural game, pressure Rodgers, and limit the stupid penalties, we have a chance.

MLive: If there were a Jeopardy! tournament with Lions players, who would win?
Jason Fox: Kellen Moore, no doubt, hands down. He'd kill it.

MLive: Is he really smart, or just know really random stuff?

Jason Fox: Both. He always just knows everything. Ask him the square root of a random number and he'd tell you. Just a smart guy.

Matthew Stafford: Oh yeah, definitely. Kellen knows more useless facts than anyone I've ever met. First of all, any player we ever see on film, he knows an odd fact about them, where they're from. We mess with him all the time, asking him who a player's parents are and stuff like that.

The burning question of 10-6 Lions of 2011 has been answered. Such an overachieving year (read: FALSE DAWN!!). They fell to 4-12 after making their first play-off appearance since 1999!! Last won a play-off game back in '91. Schwartz is 29-50 in his fifth year. Bobby Ross ('97-2000) won more games in less time and walked out on them in 2000 FFS!!

They had every chance to clinch the NFC North this season but keep bungling it up BIG TIME!! They've dropped FOUR of their last five to be 7-7. They are 4-4 in games decided by 8pts or less. <<< that just says.. stop wasting everyone's time. Shop Stafford for starters!! D on paper looks decent but just not getting it done. Have restricted the opposition to less than 20 on just three occasions. They can stop the run at least… averaging less than 100 ypg (4th overall) but that doesn't win you enough games esp when you're 23rd ranked against the pass.

Lions are in a similar position to Baltimore last year...

Really? o_O How so?

This Lions team is it's own worse enemy. Ravens won 6 of their first 7 close games decided by 7 pts or less. Sure, they went into a funk in the final five weeks (1-4) but the Ravens have been a perennial play-off team for the four previous seasons before last years SB run which wasn't a complete SHOCK why they won.

In some ways, their recent form, criticism of their quarterback, etc.

I don't for one second think they have a chance compared to the Ravens last year, I too thught they were a good chance, ad after beating us tipped them to win it, just a few similarities...

Lions should be 5-1 if they could just find a kicker who can actually ummmm. KICK THE FN BALL THRU THE UPRIGHTS!!!

Was excited about signing Prater but he's off to a dodgy start.

Lions v Saints should be a fun game.

Secondary's a little shaky but much improved. LB DeAndre Levy keeps getting better and should become a Probowler soon. Safety's are solid and our second year DB Darius Slay has improved immensely from his shaky rookie year. The meat up front with Suh, Fairly & Ziggy Ansah is just flat out dominant.

Love watching great defenses moreso than explosive offenses.

It's funny that after 20+ seasons of having a great kicker that it had now become a curse.
Definitely cost us vs the Bills last week.

Offense needs to wake up a little too.

Bumping for Lions love. Don't want to start on the refs, it's bad enough we have to go to Lambeau once a year then have to put up with the same treatment at AT&T. Granted that 3 points after halftime just isn't good enough, but had we kept the 3rd down or got a 15yd and 1st then maybe that could have turned into 10 points, or even 6 and it's a different ball game. Done now. Really shouldn't have dropped the Panthers or Bills game early in the season then regardless of last week's result we'd be playing the Cowgirls at home next week. It's done. Time to move on to next season.

Bit of love for Caldwell. Really like what he has brought in. Bell has been something special this season now we're not just launching long balls to Megatron like under Schwarz. First year in the chair and Caldwell takes the Lions to the playoffs, a whisker from NFC North champs. Really question our offence in general though. Is Lombardi our OC or just QB coordinator? Someone either needs to do some serious homework there or just put the axe through them and get someone else in. No excuse for not putting up big scores against crap teams with CJ, Tate, Bush and Bell as targets. The defence can only carry the team so far. Ebron and Pettigrew are quite handy too. I'm a fan of Stafford and IMO it's not fair how harshly some of the Lions supporters judge him when he has been in a rabble of a team for so long. I thought some of his passing was exceptional today, but there were a couple times, one I think in the third qtr when he we were only about 20 out and he launched a pass to Tate I think and it was spoiled when in fact all he had to do was look down and see he had no linesmen or secondaries between him and the line. Could have easily strolled through and made a 1st and goal. Looks like he is happy to run when he has the chance, maybe he could watch some Kaepernick over the offseason.

We won a few games this season in heart in mouth epic comeback style, just shouldn't have happened. Stafford gets put under so much pressure and hardly has time to read after the snap. Any update on Suh? As gutted as I would be lose him off the D I would love to see us snare some quality protection with the money he frees up. A new center and guard or tackle would be lovely. I think we have the nucleus of a good D for seasons to come, especially on the secondary. Will miss Suh sacking QBs with blokes hanging off him but Jones has been a handy pickup and Ziggy is coming along just nicely.

That's my /2c. Richmond, Detroit, heart break all year round. Time to put my feet up and watch the Red Wings for a few months.

Good post. We do have a new centre Swanson. The sooner that POS Raiola is gone the better.

The flag pickup (which will now be referred as the Dallas blowjob) definitely swung the game. I think deep in the red zone the Lions score and wrap the game up.

Having said that, they s**t the bed. Shanked punt, holding penalty on Levy, False start by CJ. We stop that 4&6 and ballgame.

Backup the team, I think coach Caldwell did a great job. I don't like Lombardi as OC. Too conservative with the weapons he has and very predictable. The star for me was DC Teryl Austin. Outstanding work with this defense. I hope he doesn't get snapped up for a HC job elsewhere.

Tate was an excellent addition. His YAC is excellent. Tough as nails. Joique Bell was a workhorse.

Ebron has been useless. Didn't get enough out of our TEs. We resigned Pettigrew to a 5yr $25m extension and he only caught 11 balls this year. Really?

Reggie Bush is done. Scampers east west for hundred yards for no gain. Gets brought down when tackled too easily.

Really like Stafford but his 0-18 record vs winning sides is concerning.

Overall, a great and fun year by my Lions. Stitched up in the end but I expect good things going forward.

Lions now looking for high-character players

In 2012, the Lions suffered through a plague of arrests and off-field issues. With the arrival of coach Jim Caldwell in 2014, the Lions opted for a different approach.

“Jim has a great saying, a great thing that he lives by and that he espouses to the team,” CEO Tom Lewand said Wednesday at an event for the Kensington Community Church, via Dave Birkett of theDetroit Free Press. “It’s very simple. He doesn’t believe in a lot of rules, but he encapsulates it in a great way. He says, ‘Do right and fear no one.’ Do right and fear no one. You don’t have to worry about a whole lot else if you do right. You don’t have to worry about a lot of those things. And those are the kind of players that we look for.”

The Lions are now gravitating toward players who exude high character and/or who demonstrate maturity and stability. The team, as Birkett notes, has drafted five players in the last two years who were married or engaged.

“This group that we have that we drafted and signed as free agents is probably the best group of players as [far as] checking the three boxes of physical talent, emotional intelligence and maturity and work ethic that I’ve seen in maybe the 21 years I’ve been with the Lions,” Lewand said. “And we’ve got players coming in here who have a previous disposition to doing the right thing, whether that’s how they work off the field, whether that’s how they work on the field, how they prepare, their love of the game.”

In looking for players who “do right,” the Lions are tiptoeing through a potential minefield by incorporating Christianity into their business approach. Lewand mentioned that he, Caldwell, and G.M. Martin Mayhew gather for weekly Bible study, and that their shared values have “a lot” of influence over the construction of the roster.

“There’s not a test that we put guys through,” Lewand said. “Are you a Christian? What’s your religious background? Or anything like that. Far from it.”

Lewand is smart enough to know that no employer can make decisions based on religious beliefs and/or practices. But when all things are equal between two players and the Lions know one is a Christian and one isn’t, will that be a factor in the decision regarding which one has a job and which one doesn’t? If so, that could be a problem, from a legal perspective.

From the franchise’s perspective, however, that’s a much better problem to have than a locker room with more than a few guys who don’t know how to “do right.”
