Looks like any hope East Burwood had of playing in div 3 in 2020 went up in smoke tonight with the EFL clubs voting NO to Berwick coming into the EFL.

Can you explain how Berwick, coming in to Div 2 would have somehow got East Burwood into Div 3?

Cliff the 2020 structure could have been 10,12,8,8, and 8. taking out the bye in D4.The bottom teams in D1 Knox and D2 Scoresby would not be relegated.D3 would be out South Belgrave (promoted),Chirnside Park (relegated). In Fair Park Park and East Burwood.Knox 6 wins and Scoresby 3 or 4 were very competitive this season and unlucky to be relegated.Chirnside Park struggled and you would hope be more competitive in D4.

Struggle to see a club in Div 2 having any power over clubs in Premier let alone, other clubs around.

The fact that many don’t consider Berwick an Eastern club would be a starting point. Close to 50kms from some of the inner east clubs. Not convinced there really is anything to gain by bringing them in & it appears the clubs were the same.

I thought it was Berwick coming into D1 but just saw a comment on BF YVMDFL that was they would have been in D2.Any one know which division?
From Local Footy:

“We have consulted with clubs, entered some robust discussion and received plenty of constructive feedback — mostly centred around disruption to the competition — a year after we completed the five-division restructure and concerns around promotion and relegation,” the email ;’l,mstated.

“As a result of that … (Berwick) would enter our Division 2 competition.”

It stated the original recommendation for Berwick to join Division 1 was “ruled out based on club feedback”.

EFL club delegates voted against the transfer application on Wednesday night.

It’s believed at least one Division 2 club encouraged other clubs to vote against the proposal.

Berwick needed a 50 per cent majority for the vote to be approved, but its transfer would have required clearance from AFL Outer East.

The EFL has been contacted for comment.

AFL Outer East region general manager Aaron Bailey said Berwick was a required club in the competition.

“We’ve always felt they’re a part of our long-term structure,” Bailey said.

“We believe what we’re building in the AFL Outer East, Berwick is a key part of it.

“We’ll work with them to once finals are finished to understand what their concerns are and continue to build the competition.”

Berwick president Glenn Gambetta had previously said in a letter to the league that the club’s life members, sponsors, coaches and players unanimously supported the move to the EFL.

“A move to the EFL we believe is not only in the best interest of the Berwick Football Club but is also in the best interest of football in the local region,” Gambetta said.

“Berwick has a population of 50,000 and at some point has to realise it has outgrown country football.”

Berwick was the dominant side in the defunct South East league, winning three premierships in four years between 2015 and 2018.

It finished on top of the AFL Outer East Premier Division ladder this year with a 14-2 record and percentage of 224.02 and will contest the Premier Division grand final on Friday.

As part of its transfer reasons, the club stated: “The move to AFL Outer East was a path of least resistance decision and was made in conjunction with four other SEFNL clubs.

“Berwick FC is now making a decision based on what is right for the Berwick FC.”

Thanks Cliff, that explains a lot and fully agree with the D2 club that pushed really hard for the no vote.Reminds me a long time ago when Donvale joined the EFL in the 1990's and they had to start in D3.As expected they dominated the grade but lost the final but won the next season and as most of us know made D1 not long after and won a flag there

Cliff if Berwick was admitted into divison 2 the preferred structure from the EFL would have been 10,10,10,8,8.
Chirnside wouldnt have stayed up in div 3. Scoresby would have been saved and East Burwood would have been promoted.

Surrey Park gun Kane Henden off to Doncaster Sharks just FYI.

Always been a good player but that's a big jump, be interesting to see how he goes.

But that kid from Fairpark went to South Croydon a couple of years ago and i didn't think he would get a game in their 2s and has done really well in their 1s.
