You wouldn't get an argument from me if the umpires gave the votes to Mayne, in fact I would much prefer the umpires to notice those sort of games, the selfless players who do all the hard work to make the players around them look good, like you say though, history shows they don't! Personally I think Fyfes game was probably more important, or more influential to the result, but I can see why others would swing the other way!Mayne might have had a more consistent game, but I'm sure the umpires would have noticed what Fyfe was doing for his moments in the middel and flying up all over the ground. History says the top votes will go the midfielder over a forward, unless it was Mayne kicking 6-7 goals and winning the game for us.
