Gehrig cleared of striking

St Kilda has received mixed news from the AFL's match review panel after star forward Fraser Gehrig was cleared of striking but key midfielder Lenny Hayes faces suspension on an attempting to strike charge.

Gehrig was reported for striking Fremantle's Josh Carr during Sunday's clash in Launceston but the panel found the burly forward made contact to Carr's face with an open hand and a pushing motion rather than a strike.

But Hayes has been charged with a Level Three striking offence against Docker Steven Dodd during the first quarter at Aurora Stadium.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point), in play (no points) and high contact (two points), equating to 125 demerit points and a one-match suspension.

But Hayes has an applicable bad record of a two-match suspension - increasing the penalty by 10 per cent to 137.50 points. However, with an early guilty plea that would reduce the penalty by 25 per cent to 103.13 points and a one-match suspension.

In the other notable case, Fremantle's Jeff Farmer has been offered a two-match suspension for striking St Kilda's Robert Harvey.

Is this the coat-hanger that Hayes pulled out of? If it is, there was absolutely nothing in it, no way he should go for a week for that.

Hayes was a joke and if he can get 1 week for that and Gehrig gets off the whole system needs an overhaul!!!
