Me and a few of my mates are flying down to Melbourne this weekend for a bit of footy and a lot of drinking.

Just wondering what are some decent pubs/clubs in the city? Any suggestions?

Cheers
Tony

Depends what you are into mate. Melbourne has some fantastic bars and clubs, some are more traditional, some loungy, some alternative, some pretentious... etc etc.

If you want some beers before the game I would go to the Corner Hotel in Richmond. There are some nicer ones (The Kingston for example) in Richmond however you will get a better footy atmosphere there.

Some of my favourite bars are around Brunswick St in Fitzroy however they are more loungy/funky bars.

To be honest I haven't done the clubbing scene for a while now so maybe some other posters can help you out there.

I wouldn't recommend Transport - it can be handy but can get a bit ugly.

2 below isn't too bad - right in the middle of the city square (cnr Flinders Lane/Swanston) set back in the shops underneath the Westin. Good food, too, if you want to grab something.

Also depends where yer staying - right in the CBD or inner suburbs?

Thanks mate, I might have a look at Brunswick St as we are staying pretty close to there on Albert Street. We are just looking for a few places to watch a band, have a beer etc. Not really in to the clubbing scene.

What is the casino like?

A good starting point is the Little Creatures Dining Hall in Brunswick St. Go there for a couple of 'large'-uns and a feed before you head off to a live music venue - good prices, top-class beer and the food's good. Nice eye candy at most times of the night, too.

I agree with the Sherriff on the Little Creatures Beer Hall. Great place to start and good food.

There is also a bar called Bimbos which does fantastic gourmet pizzas that are really cheap. From Monday to Thursday they are $4 however they are not much more expensive Friday to Sunday. I recommend the Caesar Salad Pizza.

There are some good bars that play music in that area. The Evelyn Hotel will have a few bands playing and you can get lucky and get someone quite good. There is also a place called the Night Cat which is on Johnston St just near Brunswick St that play live funky jazz music. Apart from that there are literally dozens of bars that are all quite good.

The Casino is a place where a lot of tourists go to. If you are into playing the tables then it is actually a really good casino however if you are just wanting to drink I wouldn't recommend it.

Always good music at the Espy in St Kilda with multiple bands to pick from and a great place to have a beer, you dont really get the tools there that you do at some other places as its generally a bit more laid back.

+1 :thumbsu: It's a trip across the river but well worth it! Plus Rupert Betheras drinks there so it can't be all bad :D

II had a great night at the Espy after the Carltank game, then came back to the hotel and got banned for giving DNine a few choice expletives...lol . Nice Pub but obviously the barman's fault, what with my previous good record and all.

As has been mentioned really diverse depending on what your into.

The Espy and the Evlyn are both great for live music. There are places that have even rawer acts again like the Arthouse on elizebeth st, Barley corn on johnston st and emperess on nicholson st.

There are also a heap of novelty type bars. Trader bar for example is a bar where the drinks are like stocks. The prices of drinks depend on what people are buying and they fluctuate as people try to buy the cheapest drinks. Occasionally the bar tenders "crash the market" at put everything at the cheapest price. It's a good idea in theory but I don't think the set minimum prices are going to save you much and if you like a particular drink it's not the place for you.

There is the ice bar on Russel St where everything is made of ice. It's small and in the time your allowed to stay in the bar for you will only fit 2 drinks in (inc lining up)

south morang pub goes ok:thumbsu:
do you hang around to watch the fights after closing like i used too?

I was dragged along once.

Bartas was djing which seemed to be a big deal to the crowd and there was a massive **** off line. They actually stop letting people in at 12 because it was too full. Didn't have to wait till after closing for fights, there was one in the line.

It looks nicer inside. On the weekends there are no longer bands, besides that it's just as bad if not worse. I have been 2wce once old once new. I have learnt if a place was s**t don't believe people who say "it's good now" they liked it the whole time.

Agree with everything on the South Morang.

The fact that the music on Friday night is classified as "New" (when it's about 3 years old) says something about that place.

But don't listen to me about it; my judgement is clouded due to everytime I go there its a high school reunion.

If you like your retro music, go to Perseverance on a Friday; sometimes gets out of hand though.
