Just rewatched a bit of the second Derby this year.

Schofield was almost our best player for the first half.

We really lacked the ability to stick tackles, which is a cardinal sin against Fyfe/Mundy. We are a long way off being a top side in terms of overall depth and ability, but we're not that far off being competitive.

If we do focus on strength over the summer and see a bit of an improvement in our tackling and contested footy, as well as get lucky with some quick development from our 2013/2014 recruits, then I can see us pushing the top eight in the short term.

The key will then be how to manage our midfield personnel over the following 2 or 3 years - how quickly we turn over our players and who we persist (or don't persist) with out of the our current midfield group. The rest of our side is pretty much set, give or take fringe players on the flanks. If Simpson can continue to recruit midfielders from the draft and trades, then we might make top four again in the next three or four years before we see the end of JK/Emac/Hurn et al.

Who knows what will happen then - likely Gold Coast, Sydney and Port will be pretty dominant
