How will the Draft be affected by Essendon's guilty verdict?

Number 1 pick is massively over rated !
How often does the number 1 pick end up the best player of the draft ?
Not often
Could make a case for Deledio, Cooney, Goddard, Riewoldt, Gardiner.

I noticed you've left out Hodge....You know: The number 1 September, Grand Final Specialist....AKA: The Big Dog who always stands up to be counted & delivers when it actually matters most....AKA: The real number one player in the comp!:thumbsu:

As for 4 of the 5 you've named above....None could hold a candle next to Hodge in September....That's where & when true reputations are made in this game of ours.

Podge is "The Man"....Like it or not.

Maybe. But imagine if you put him in a less well-rounded, well-coached team. If he was at Melbourne at the moment I reckon he'd look about as good as Nathan Jones - which is to say very good but not the superstar you're portraying him as. Not much help being a "September specialist" if you never get there.

I would only have Riewoldt in the same conversation as Hodge. Hodge seems to of found some consistency, he looks as good as ever, and has strung a few good seasons on end now. Steps up when it counts, is a great leader, and has the points on the board. If Hodge can stay on the park, I think he can get even better, he is looking fitter than ever, seemed to of dropped that puppy fat. He looks fit, muscular even.

Hodge is a fantastic player, but are you honestly telling me he's a superior to Chris Judd?

He's had an equally good career over the journey & is currently at the peak of his game....Judd's first 5 years were phenomenal, but what Hodge has done these past 5 seasons isn't too shabby by comparison either....Meanwhile, Judd sits at home darning socks!

Also a far more rounded footballer in that he has a defensive accountability side to his game & has Judd's measure in the air also.

By the time he retires, he'll have well & truly eclipsed Judd's career, if he hasn't already, in terms of achievements that matter in this comp.

Much like Buddy, Judd was all about Judd....Whereas Hodge, is all about the TEAM....I know which one I'd rather have on my side.

Was hodge the best player in his year ?
I would have judd before him .
Hodge has 2 norms compared to judd 1 .
Hodge also won his first norm as spare man in defence where judd won his in a loosing GF as the main man in the guts .
Judd also won 2 brownlows and polled many more votes .
Hodge may be mr September but judd was every month of the season .
I would admit Hodge would win mr mad Monday hands down .

Regardless of where the Bombers finish they will struggle to hold the 12 players suspended so I guess they will need the first pick if that's what they end up with.
I know a lot of people like to think Carlton just want to finish last but as a member who actually goes each week I want them to win AS MANY games as they can. Hopefully this includes 2 thumping wins against Essendon

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I can't see the AFL letting that occur, not for a moment.
If you can't see it you need to get your eyes checked..
I think I'm going to vomit, but...

If Essendon finish last, they should get the #1 pick. Carlton fans know better than anyone how thoroughly draft restrictions can destroy a club.

Essendon have been punished, and now the players themselves have been punished. Before fellow Blues fans jump on me - I acknowledge Essendon's (club) punishment wasn't as harsh as ours, but we'll never see anything like it again in the game so we can't keep wanting to use it as a measuring stick.

It's of absolutely no benefit to the competition going forward to ruin Essendon the way the AFL did with Carlton.
This guy gets it. :thumbsu:

I'm also genuine when I say I want a stronger Carlton then they currently are. You got screwed by the AFL.
How is losing your 12 guns for a season & being a virtual 'Monty' for the spoon 'benefiting' the club?
There is zero point debating anything Essendon related with that flog.
The Bombers will get the number one pick in November's draft even if they finish last. End of the story. The only way they'll lose it is they trade it during trade period which is highly unlikely
There is absolutely zero chance we are trading our first rounder this year. It will be all about keeping as many of the 12 as possible.
And the AFL will allow this to occur because their handling of this whole affair has been a disgrace.

Not allowing Essendon to snap up the first pick shouldn't be looked at as further punishment, merely rebalancing the situation to maintain the integrity of the draft system.
Integrity of the draft system? Please. Jobe Watson keeping his Brownlow would yes probably taint the award and it would lose it's integrity. Essendon getting pick one in this years draft would make zero difference to the integrity of future drafts or past drafts. The system will be just like it always was.
Simple. If Essendon finish last they get pick 1. I think Carlton were going to get the wooden spoon prior to CAS so they'll be unhappy.
Unhappy for not finishing last? No, the idea of the sport is to win as many games as possible and finish as high as you can.

Why would they be unhappy? Building a list is not reliant on 1 pick number.

Exactly.

from 2000:
- 16 no.1 picks
- 1 premiership player

= 6.25% of no. 1 draftees that have received a medal.

from 1990:
- 26 no.1 picks
- 5 premiership players

= 19.23% of no. 1 draftees that have received a medal.

As expected casting a wider net increases the % due to recent drafts but there were a few players in the late 90's that won a premiership. Which was a high % in a short period.

Not good reading.

Exactly. Since the year 2000, only Luke Hodge has won a premiership after being drafted as a number 1 pick. That means there are 15 no.1 picks without a premiership.

In fact, you could call it a curse....Fremantle traded that No' 1 pick to us, which was the last time that has happened.:thumbsu:

Also; Just for accuracy's sake:....That's 1 Premiership player & 4 premierships.;)

Since 2000: Most number 1 picks:

Carlton....4....Gibbs, Murphy, Kreuzer, Weitering
GWS....3....Patton, Whitfield, Boyd
St.Kilda....3.... Riewoldt, Goddard, McCartin
Melbourne....2....Watts, Scully
Richmond....1....Deledio
Footscray....1....Cooney
Gold Coast....1....Swallow
Hawks ( Freo Traded)....1....Hodge

Anyone screaming about Essendon getting the number 1 pick take note:....It is by no means a recipe for success....Just ask Melbourne.o_O

Just edited my post. same info though.

Good expansion of my point.

p.s. we all know that you have won 4 premierships :p

Carlton were going to finish last IMO. Now due to CAS Essendon will IMO. Carlton lose out on pick one during the early part of a rebuild. Not saying they won't try win every week but there list says they won't win many.

Yeah, and now they might not finish last. Surely that's a good thing for Carlton?

They can have it. Essendon are going to need that first pick.
They will need every pick they can get, after 12 players walk out as delisted free agents due to breach of contract.
