MLB Hot Stove 2023-2024

Never heard of the nickname "Southern Thunder" for Team Australia. In all their official comms, they refer to themselves as "Team Australia".

It's a little ironic that the vast majority of MLB players Australia has produced are relief pitchers, given that the current relief pitchers playing for Team Australia are generally horrible. I think the cupboard for relievers when Australia attempts to qualify for and play in the next WBC is looking pretty bare behind Hendriks (assuming he wants to continue playing for Australia).

Having said that, it slipped under the radar, but the Detroit Tigers signed an 18 year old South Australian Jack Bushell to a professional contract in January. He seems to be more of a starter than a reliever (which is good).

Bazzana was named PAC-12 Player of the Week for the Beavers. He hit .539, including three homeruns, seven RBI and successfully stole two bases.

Fox Sports did a two-part profile on Bazzana in December.

The A's also signed an Australian, LHP Jack O'Loughlin, to a minor league contract in November. He's been in the minor leagues for a while - signed with the Tigers back in 2016 and got as far as Triple-A with Detroit in 2023 (had a 6-10 record in 25 starts with a 3.99 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 124 innings pitched). He started Australia's games against Korea and the Czech Republic in the WBC.

The Cubs officially announced their re-signing of OF/1B Cody Bellinger and have scheduled a press conference for tonight (Australia time) to present him to the media. The Cubs traded LHP Bailey Horn to the White Sox in exchange for minor league RHP Matt Thompson to open a roster spot for Bellinger.

The St Louis Cardinals have made their deal with former Giant shortstop Brandon Crawford official, and have designated infielder Buddy Kennedy for assignment to create the roster spot. Kennedy was claimed by the Cardinals off waivers from the Athletics in October 2023.

According to reports, Crawford will earn $2 million in 2024 from the Cardinals.

As noted above, the White Sox acquired LHP Bailey Horn from the Cubs to enable the Cubs to create roster space for Cody Bellinger. In order to fit Horn onto their 40-man roster, the White Sox put RHP Jesse Scholtens on the 60-day IL with a torn UCL in his pitching arm. Scholtens is scheduled to have Tommy John surgery on Friday, which will wipe out his 2024 season.

The Washington Nationals are in agreement with RHP Matt Barnes on a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training, subject to the completion of a physical. Barnes previously pitched for the Red Sox.

Blake Snell remains the top starting pitcher currently available on the free agent market. Reports continue to persist suggesting that he and his agent are in negotiations with the New York Yankees over the terms of a contract. It was previously reported that the Yankees had offered Snell five years, $150 million earlier in the off season, before signing RHP Marcus Stroman on a two year deal in January. However, it appears that this does not take Snell off the table for the Yankees, with reports suggesting that the two parties discussed the terms of a contract as recently as yesterday.

The trade that sent OF Manuel Margot to the Twins is now official, with the Twins formally announcing that they have acquired Margot, infield prospect Rayne Doncon and cash (reportedly $6 million) in exchange for minor league shortstop Noah Miller. The Dodgers originally received $4 million from the Rays to partially pay for Margot's salary, and have kicked in $2 million of their own cash to the Twins.

The Twins put RHP Josh Winder on the 60-day IL to create roster space for Margot, announcing that Winder has a scapular stress fracture. His exact timeline is unclear, but he will not be eligible to return to the active roster until late May at the earliest.

MLB.com's mock draft has Bazzana gong fifth overall to the White Sox.

ESPN's Kiley McDaniel mocks Bazzana third to the Rockies.

The New York Yankees have announced that they have claimed utility player Jahmai Jones off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers, who had recently designated him for assignment. The Yankees designated infielder Jordan Groshans for assignment to create a roster spot.

Jones is a former top-100 prospect who has struggled to elevate his game at the MLB level in trips to the big leagues with the Angels, Orioles and Brewers. He has had just 90 MLB plate appearances for a .179/.233/.226 batting line, which features a 36.7% strikeout rate.

The Colorado Rockies have acquired OF Sam Hilliard from the Orioles. In order to open a roster spot for Hilliard, the Rockies have placed RHP Antonio Senzatela on the 60-day IL.

It's a homecoming for the Hilliard, who was drafted by the Rockies in 2015 and made his MLB debut with them in 2019. Between 2019 and 2022, Hilliard played in 214 MLB games for the Rockies, across all three outfield spots, and batting a combined .212/.294/.423 with 29 homeruns, 15 steals, a 10% walk rate and a 32.7% strikeout rate in 639 plate appearances.

The Rockies traded Hilliard to the Braves in November 2022, and he played 40 MLB games for the Braves in 2023, hitting .236/.295/.431 through 78 plate appearances last season. He was placed on the IL to end his season and the Braves attempted to get him through waivers, but lost him to the Orioles in a waiver claim. Hilliard played with Baltimore in Spring Training before being designated for assignment.

The Rockies inherit the $800,000 salary that Hilliard agreed with the Orioles to avoid arbitration, but he will not hit free agency until after the 2026 season.

The Baltimore Orioles announced that they have signed 2B Kolten Wong to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training as a non-roster invitee. The Orioles also announced that they have signed RHP Julio Teheran to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training as a non-roster invitee.

Wong spent 2023 playing for the Mariners and Dodgers, but struggled badly with Seattle, hitting .165/.241/.227 in 216 plate appearances, before hitting .300/.353/.500 from 34 plate appearances with the Dodgers late in the season.

In the meantime, the Orioles have added veteran pitching depth to their organisation by coming to an agreement with Teheran. According to reports, Teheran is in line to earn $2 million if he is promoted to the active roster. Teheran most recently pitched for the Brewers, starting 11 games and also coming in as a reliever in three games. He allowed a 4.40 ERA across 71 2/3 innings.

Teheran had a long career with the Braves, but has bounced around various clubs since leaving Atlanta after the 2019 season, going from the Angels to Detroit and then spending a season out of MLB.

The San Diego Padres have agreed to a minor league contract with speedy outfielder Tim Locastro, with an invitation to Spring Training as a non-roster invitee. Locastro spent 2023 with the Mets, playing in 43 MLB games with 67 plate appearances, batting .232/.338/.393.

Between 2019-2021, Statcast had him as the fastest player in the big leagues, but his speed has begun to slip a bit. In 2022, he was ranked in the 99th percentile, while in 2023 he was down to 93rd percentile of big leaguers in terms of sprint speed.

The Padres are looking for outfield depth, with only three outfielders currently on the 40-man roster (Fernando Tatis Jr, Jose Azocar and Jurickson Profar). Locastro joins Oscar Mercado, Cal Mitchell and Bryce Johnson as non-roster options in camp.

The Detroit Tigers have claimed infielder Buddy Kennedy off waivers from the St Louis Cardinals, according to announcements from both clubs, after the Cardinals designated Kennedy for assignment earlier in the week. The Tigers designated INF Andre Lipcius for assignment in a corresponding move.

Kennedy has played 40 games of MLB with the Arizona Diamondbacks, hitting just .206/.293/.299 in his 123 MLB plate appearances. He was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks in September, and has bounced around the league for a while. The Athletics claimed him off waivers towards the end of the season, and then he was claimed against by the Cardinals in October.

Kennedy has experience at third base, second base and first base, as well as left field.

Lipcius made his MLB debut in 2023 and hit .286/.342/.400 in 38 MLB plate appearances.

The Tampa Bay Rays have re-signed Francisco Mejia to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training. Rene Pinto is expected to start every day as the preferred catcher for the Rays, while non-roster invitee Alex Jackson has been expected to be the backup to Pinto. Mejia would give the Rays a depth option behind the unproven tandem for the time being.

As noted above, the second of the "Boras four" has found a new home, with the Giants reportedly agreeing to a three year contract (subject to opt-outs) with 3B Matt Chapman.

Chapman is due to make $20 million in 2024, $18 million in 2025 and $16 million in 2026 if he sees out the three year contract. Chapman has opt-outs after each of the 2024 and 225 season that would send him back to the free agency market should he exercise the right.

The deal is not yet finalised, and the Giants will need to make a roster move to accommodate Chapman's signing.

Chapman reunites with manager Bob Melvin, as well as president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi. Chapman played under Melvin while at Oakland while Zaidi was part of the Oakland front office when the A's drafted him with their first round draft selection in 2014.

At Oakland, Chapman developed into one of the best defenders at the hot corner in the league, regularly competing with Nolan Arenado for that accolade. Chapman finished among the top 10 in AL MVP voting while with the A's in 2018 and 2019, and won Gold Glove awards for his defence in both seasons.

Chapman suffered a torn labrum in 2020 that ended his season early. That seems to be the turning point in his career, with Chapman's offensive production taking a dive after that point. The A's traded Chapman to Toronto after the 2021 season (when Chapman hit .210/.314/.403 in his last season with Oakland) and while Chapman's production did pick up, he has not matched the highs he achieved while a member of Oakland since the shoulder injury.

Chapman turned in a .229/.324/.433 batting line in 2022. He got off to a scorching hot start in 2023, hitting .384/.486/.687 through the first month of the 2023 season, but he went ice cold as the calendar turned from April to May. Over his final 467 plate appearances as a Blue Jay, Chapman hit just .205/.298/.361 with a strikeot rate approaching 30%.

Chapman hit free agency for the first time in his career after the 2023 season and clearly sought a more lucrative contract than he ended up signing with the Giants. Chapman remains a solid defender at third base, although his defence has taken a step back since the highs he achieved with the Athletics. However, he does remain an upgrade defensively over the previous Giants' third baseman, J.D. Davis.

Arguably, Chapman has cost himself a fair amount of money after he turned down an offer from Oakland of 10-years, $150 million guaranteed salary back in 2019. He also reportdly rejected an offer from the Blue Jays that would have paid him $100 million.

Depending on how his 2024 season plays out, there's a possibility that he'll head back to free agency and will vie with Houston third baseman Alex Bregman as the top third baseman available on the market.

Given that the Blue Jays made Chapman a qualifying offer at the start of free agency, the Giants will forfeit their second highest pick in the 2024 draft (#51 overall) and $500,000 in international signing bonus to add a player who had declined the qualifying offer. Per the collective bargaining agreement, Chapman is ineligible to receive a qualifying offer in the future.

For losing a player who received a qualifying offer, the Blue Jays will acquire an extra draft pick after the fourth round, roughly 136th overall.

Chapman joins Jung Hoo Lee, Jorge Soler and Jordan Hicks as new arrivals at San Francisco.

The arrival of Chapman puts J.D. Davis in limbo at the Giants, as Chapman will take over responsibilities for the third base on an everyday basis, while Soler will be the everyday designated hitter. Davis may be put up for trade by the Giants, as he is set to hit free agency at the end of the season, and at this stage, he would be unlikely to agree to a contract extension at a club where he no longer has a clear role.

Davis told reporters that the Giants' decision to sign Chapman was surprising to him, adding that the club had not communicated their plans with him prior to the signing of Chapman. Davis also noted that long-time Giants, Brandon Crawford, also did not receive any communications from the Giants' front office before he hit free agency. Crawford, now a St Louis Cardinal, has subsequently told reporters that he was disappointed with how the end came for him at San Francisco and told reporters that he believes he was not wanted back by the Giants.

The Giants might be motivated to trade Davis in order to free up $6.9 million in salary that they could put towards a new pitcher. Reports are connecting the Giants with free agent LHP Blake Snell.

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed RHP Kevin Herget to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training. Herget pitched in a Spring Training game for the Brewers against the Rangers. Herget has spent a decade in professional baseball with five different teams. He first reached the majors in 2022, making three appearances for the Rays. He has 31 1/3 innings of MLB pitching to his name, with a 5.74 ERA.

The Boston Red Sox have signed 1B C.J. Cron to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training. Cron is due to make a $2 million base salary if he cracks the active roster, with up to $500,000 available via incentives.

Cron started the 2023 season with the Rockies but hit the IL on multiple occasions due to problems with his back. The Rockies traded Cron to the Angels mid-season and he ended up playing just 71 games between the Rockies and Angels. He hit 12 homeruns in his abbreviated time but his slash line of .248/.295/.434 translated to a wRC+ of 82.

Former Ranger, Athletic and White Sox Elvis Andrus has signed a minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to the club themselves. Andrus has been invited to Spring Training. Andrus joins Kevin Newman as a veteran non-roster signing competing for a backup role on the Diamondbacks' roster. Arizona will roll with Geraldo Perdomo as the every-day shortstop and the Diamondbacks will likely have Emmanuel Rivera and Jace Peterson as depth options coming off the bench, so Andrus and Newman will be looking to make a good impression during Spring Training.

Andrus has accumulated 17,010 innings at shortstop in his 15 major league seasons. Prior to last season, Andrus had never played a position other than shortstop in his professional career, but played 499 2/3 innings at second base and 27 innings at third base for the White Sox in 2023.

Andrus has never been particularly productive at the plate, with a career .269/.325/.370 good enough only for an 86 wRC+, and that is slightly ahead of his 2023 production (.251/.304/.358 over 406 plate appearances for a 81 wRC+).
