Russell is another blow.

Hall is the one I think will replace Spooks. Sort of that HF type with occasional bounts in the midfield. Should be able to last 4 weeks, though we have a hard month ahead.

Rory must have done some sort of ligament damage, like Swallow's. Hope we get details about it. Certainly hope it's not an ACL, otherwise he'll be out for most of the pre-season.

When Harbrow returns from injury does the elevated rookie have to go back to the rookie list or do they remain elevated for the remainder of the season...was his replacement Horseley?

Further stuff RE: Rory.

The Gold Coast SUNS have been dealt another major injury blow with key defender Rory Thompson set to miss the remainder of the season following surgery on his ankle.

Thompson had scans on his ankle last week and met with a specialist this week where it was determine surgery was necessary.

“Rory sustained a significant amount of ligament damage to his ankle and following consultation with the specialist it was determined that surgery was a necessity.”

Ashcroft said it was a disappointing result for both Rory and the club.

“It is extremely disappointing for Rory, we saw in the second half of last year what he is capable of, and on the back of an injury interrupted start to the season we were hopeful that Rory would finish off the season strongly.”

Thompson has played 13 matches for the GC SUNS since making his AFL debut in Round 16, 2011.

Seb Tape undergoes surgery.

Gold Coast SUNS defender Seb Tape underwent reconstructive surgery in Melbourne yesterday afternoon.

Tape and Gold Coast SUNS High Performance Manager Andrew Weller met with leading knee specialists Professor Julian Feller on Monday prior to the surgery.

Feller is an internationally recognised Melbourne orthopaedic surgeon whose main area of interest is knee surgery.

His expertise covers the whole range of knee conditions from sports injuries to knee replacement.

Seb told The Rise that Feller outlined the surgery extensively prior to the surgery.

“He gave me a complete run down on the how he would reconstruct me knee, he went through the scans with me and gave me an insight into the understanding what and how he will complete the surgery.”

Tape’s surgery was completed last night and he is expected to return to his home town of Adelaide following surgery before returning the Gold Coast in a couple of weeks.

Tape said despite the surgery being daunting he was comfortable with the outcome.

“I suppose you are always a little worried prior to a surgery, but it all seems to have gone pretty well.

"I’ll head home to Adelaide to spend some time with my family while I’m recovering and get back to the coast pretty soon” he said.

General Manager - Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft confirmed Tape will be sidelined for a considerable period of time.

"The nature of the injury means Seb will miss the rest of the 2012 season and will be in rehabilitation mode when the 2013 pre-season commences."

Tape is in relatively good spirits despite the painful end to a season which had already been punctuated with injury.

Seb bravely attempted to play on despite losing three teeth in the opening round of the season and was really starting to make his presence felt for the SUNS when he suffered the devastating knee injury in the game against North Melbourne. The talented 19 year old has played 23 games for the GC SUNS since making his debut in the Club’s inaugural match against Carlton in Round 2 at the Gabba last season.

4 weeks the surgeon says #hoping

I'm not sure if that's 4 weeks until he can play or what, but if he can get a game in the seniors in round 23 or 24 (he'd need 2-3 in the NEAFL first), then it will do the world of good for him. :thumbsu:

I wouldn't be trucking any of those red players down the road to Kardinia Park for a whacking in the Barwon mud
Should be aiming for wins v GWS Melbourne and Brisbane
Me neither, would rather send them to Metricon for a crack at Geelong ;)

Young SUNS require surgery.

Two of the Gold Coast SUNS most promising young players will go under the knife this week as the Clubs medical team prepare to have them ready for what will be exhaustive off and pre season campaigns for the talented youngsters.

Boom youngsters Jaeger O’Meara and Alex Sexton have been ruled at the for the remainder of the 2012 home and away season with O’Meara, set to undergo groin surgery in Sydney this week.

O’Meara has completed an individually tailored program this season after being drafted to the Gold Coast SUNS preseason.

Jaeger played in a number of the SUNS NAB Cup games pre-season after being granted AFL approval, despite not officially taking his place on the SUNS list until 2013. He also played another six games in the NEAFL for the GC SUNS reserves predominately against rival AFL reserves teams.

GC SUNS, General Manager – Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft said the club had been aware for some time that O’Meara would require the surgery.

“Jaeger’s surgery has been on the radar for some time and following consultation with our medical team, the surgeon and Jaeger we determined that it would be in his best interests to have surgery during the back half of this season.

Undergoing the surgery now will give Jaeger every opportunity to have an uninterrupted pre-season prior to his first season of AFL football.”

Similar to O’Meara, the SUNS had been aware that Sexton would require surgery on his hip.

The 18-year-old Queenslander has had an impressive debut season. After staring in the NEAFL, Sexton made his AFL debut in Round 8 against the Western Bulldogs in Darwin. Sexton strung together six games and showed why the GC SUNS selected the AIS/AFL Academy player under the local talent access rules.

“We have been very impressed with Alex’s first season; we think he has really benefited from playing at senior level; however we also new that at some stage Alex would require surgery to repair damage to his hip.”

Ashcroft said both O’Meara and Sexton would begin rehabilitation immediately.

“Jaeger and Alex will commence their rehabilitation with our strength and conditioning team once they return from surgery and will be ready for the start of our 2013 pre-season.

There is a huge upside for the boys to undergo surgery at this time of the year.

Alex has had a real taste of senior football and understands what it takes at the highest level, and we believe the boys will benefit greatly from full pre-seasons as we anticipate them both playing significant roles for the senior team next year,” Ashcroft said.

Do you think we're going to Arizona again?

Definitely. Will be a similar setup as to last year I would think.

Arizona not only provides the fitness benefits(arguable I guess), but it also provides the chance for players to really bond with each other as a unit for 2 weeks. Which, after a season like this, I'm sure will do them the world of good. They will get each other fired up and really hit the rest of the pre-season hard.

Disappointing that Alex played if he was injured as they could have given another youngster an opportunity. They couldn't have done any worse given the result but the experience may have been invaluable!:(

Bit of rumour going around that Swallow will go through fitness tests this week, and may even strap the boots on.

You would think he'd play a game in the NEAFL first, just to get the run back into his legs. All will be revealed soon, hopefully! What a fantastic break that would be for us though.

Official injury update. Rischitelli available. Prestia could be in as soon as this week.

Dion Prestia - Hamstring - Test

Tom Lynch - Foot - 1-2 weeks
Luke Russell - Hamstring - 1-2 weeks
David Swallow - Knee - 1-2 weeks

Seb Tape - Knee - Season
Daniel Gorringe – Achilles - Indefinite
Rory Thompson – Ankle - Season
Jaeger O'Meara - Groin - Season
Alex Sexton - Hip - Season
Nathan Bock - Fractured Right Tibia - Season

I think they've kept Gorro on indefinite because it's still a non-sure thing. But it's entirely possible he'll go from that status to 1 week in very short span of time.

He said he was hoping to play again in rounds 23 and 24. That would be sensational for us if he could.

Poor Hutchins. :(

After a collision with NT Thunder player in the final term, Hutchins was transported to hospital with concerns over the state of his kidney.

Accompanied by GC SUNS Player Welfare Officer, Sam Coen, Hutchins underwent scans in Darwin.

The results confirmed a grade two laceration to his kidney and a fracture to a vertebrae in his back.

Hutchins and Coen remained in Darwin for several days, before returning to the Gold Coast once the SUNS youngster was given the all clear to travel.

Hutchins played six matches for the SUNS in 2011, but an injury cursed season has restricted him in his second season.
