The KPMG 2014 report. They have illegal tobacco running at 14.5% of the total market. This figure is deemed a conservative figure by the tobacco industry with BAT having been quoted as say so.

It is also worth noting that according to the KPMG figures total tobacco consumption has not actually reduced that much in the 3 years they have been commissioned to do this report.
A report for Imperial Tobacco is about as credible as a report commissioned by the Collingwood Football Club on which is the greatest club in the AFL.

Complained to the milk bar bloke about the prices. He said next time I come in he will walk me through the home made ciggies deal. I also have to swear under penalty of death to keep it secret. Funnily, his cousin used to own the shop, and he would download movies off the net, burn them to dvd and rent them like that, dodgy as hell.

They also sell those arab tobacco bong things. Muzzi shop owners are awesome.

You might want to have a look at who actually did the report not who commissioned it. The report was done by KPMG, previous reports were done by Deliotte & PWC. So you are essentially saying the 3 of the 4 global accounting firms are incompetent, interesting argument.

I've not read the report.
But I did read the "Important notice" on the second page.

Seems to be saying that they were commissioned to examine data, to find a particular outcome for Phillip Morris and British American Tobacco.
And that if it turns out that their data is used to do harm in anyway, that they will not be liable...
Having been a pack a day smoker and still socialising with a number who are, I know an increasing number of people now buying black market cigarettes. The heavy smokers are the ones buying them. Given the socio-economic demographic in which I socialise can afford to buy brand name smokes, I have no problem in believe these figures are true if not understated.

Slax, you're a level headed, and clever poster.
(As far as we bigfooty posters go...)

But The reason I didn't make a negative remark about your post, rather than a curious one. Was because I thought you must know something more substantial that supports the skewed KPMG results.

A family member works at BAT. BAT have done their own research, based on their sales in comparison to total sales, tobacco production and tobacco consumption. These figures show that there is a slow decline in smoking, but the decline in legal sales is falling at a faster rate. Go to any smoke shop and you'll find that they will sell chop-chop. You can't get it if you just walk up and ask, you need to be referred by someone who already buys it or be introduced by them. When this happens what them dive under the counter or go out the back and they'll get them for you. The shops make a higher profit off chop-chop than they do with branded cigarettes as they are not in competition with the supermarket chains.

Plain packaging by itself hasn't done anything, but I do think it's like that "who sunk the boat?" story. All of the stuff put together, (the ads, the education in schools, the plain packaging, the restrictions on where you can smoke, the taxes raising the prices) has contributed to making smoking not that cool anymore in mainstream Australian culture.

No, they are highly competent at giving the customer what they pay for. These guys are not shining lights of moral rectitude. They're businesses.

I understand smoking is in decline in all areas bar WA. WA was the exception for a while given the high immigration numbers.

In regards to the chop chop, is that handing power and a few bucks to the little guy or just the corporates working around the law? in either case it is obviously wrong but just asking out of interest.

Plain packaging is pretty disgusting. When do we start putting victims of domestic abuse on VB tinnies?

Instead of plain packagng, people simply need to say " christ on a bike you reek" to smokers.

I'm sure being told someone stinks all the time will be more of a motivator to give up than a blank bit of cardboard.

you're right

many company's simply won't hire smokers for a variety of reasons. you would think they get the message after a while.

I don't understand why anyone would smoke. as it usually demonstrates a complete disregard for others and in turn reduces ones own opportunities in life.

I know there are a number of responsible smokers but so many think its ok to smoke anywhere near entrances, in standing areas like bus stops or train stations or along footpaths in CBD areas.

Illegal to smoke at transport locations in Vic now. CBC public spaces will happen within 20 years. Many buildings have restrictionson what you can do at entrances or covered spaces as well

Personally couldnt care less what others do, as an individual i try to be a considerate smoker, its all you can do. There are inconsiderate knobs across all sections of society.

hear hear

i started smoking in 1998, used to buy the small packs of escort blue. they were under $4 a pack. eventually worked my way up to buy PJ Super Milds in the 30 pack. think they were $7 a pack. said the same thing about giving them away when they went up to $10 a pack - yet here i am..

switching to e-cigs might save your life ;) at the very least it's a *ton cheaper.

Gustavo, If this can't make the Gallic smokers army cease, then nothing will work

Didn't know the French term for impotent

L'impuissance

I love French words

Bought a pack of Winnie blues the other week and discovered they have put a 'taste filter' on them. Called something like that anyway.

It's a normal filter with half of it hollowed out with like this little tunnel going through from the end.

Have no idea why they would do this. It was like sucking air.

Big tobacco is really struggling to come up with new ideas.imagine being a cigarette sales rep these days. Do these companies even have marketing staff now in Australia?

And if they do, what the hell do they all day? There's nothing to market. No advertising , no point of sale gimmicks, no copywriting..nothing.

But some genius came up with the idea of a hollow filter that promises better 'taste'. Strange.

Yep, it's a combination of lots of little things. No one smokes before 18 and it's not hugely common to find someone over 25 who always does, but once people hit 18, social smoking comes in. It's a way to start talking to girls at pubs and clubs, it's got some novelty, and private school girls do it like they do five blokes a week - because they were told never to.

I don't think permanent addiction and lifelong smoking is a huge issue anymore, maybe that's me being hopeful, but at 21 I don't think I know many people who don't have a concery after a few beers.

Maybe they are looking at the fact more people are moving to rollies over premade cigarettes so they are trying to get some of them back?

Wash your mouth out.....

Yet the do-gooders want to have them banned...it was always about telling others what to do with those pole smoking w***ers.
