Peter Wright at pick 10...

Peter Wright wouldn't only be a controversial decision given the extreme surplus of tall forwards/rucks on our list... but it would mean we miss out yet again on a quality key defender with Rivers and Lonergan in there 30s.

This is probably our last chance to get one. Not having a replacement for Lonergan at FB will be catastrophic on the field and for the development of the rest of the team.

We can afford to take risks and develop young mids/fwds when the backline is there to save us time and time again. If Lonergan retired in 2015 or 16 and we dont go key defender now, we will leak an extra 4 goals a game, and force Taylor to be more defensive... all while we have Kersten, Vardy, Wright playing VFL behind others.

Really interesting draft this one. From memory last year's order was pretty established by this time?

From the snippets of info am I right in thinking, Geelong has been linked to 'liking' Goddard and Pickett but those two appear likely to go to GWS, so it seems the other players linked to us (particualy the last few days) could come down to:
DeGoey
Wright
Lever
Durdin

Lever seems like the type of player/person Geelong would like. I have a gut feel they may not go with Wright. DeGoey seems like the 'safest bet'. Durdin has flexibility(?).

First top ten pick in 8 years, Number 5 gurnsey, no pressure kid!

First pick has to go on what ever player Wells rates as the best player left. Needs or not, It has to be used on the best player.
If that turns out not to be a key defender then so be it, go get one in free agency next year, or develop one from within.

Last year I had my money on Luke Dunstan and as he was passed over and passed over getting towards our pick I was getting ready to celebrate and Wells went Darcy Lang,I hope he keeps the cleaver stuff in the bag for the latter rounds and picks the obvious from what's left at 10 this time.

That's for sure, hoping Wells doesn't play roulette again with our first pick, Goddard, Durdin or Lever with the option of a slipping Wright, I doubt he'd do the Lang trick all over again, hope not.
Last year when he passed on Dunstan he floored me, but a P10 should be an obvious shouldn't it?

Darcy looks a super talent though. From the limited vision thus far, the kid appears to have something very different to most of the recent draftees. Perhaps that selection will be validated next season?

Lang, Jansen, Thurlow . . . three blokes who could turn out to be our next Kelly, Corey & Milburn.

It's still far too early to be judging Lang and Dunstan isn't it? I will admit I was as surprised as anyone when Lang's name was read out, and Dunstan clearly out performed Lang in their first year, but I think we really need to wait at least another couple of years before we can determine whether taking Lang ahead of the more obvious choices was a failure or not. Lang could still very well be the best player from last years draft - or at least the best that was available at Geelong's first pick.

I think the club will approach with a list of 9 names in order of preference and whatever the highest one left is who we will get. Judging by what I have read I think the list will look like this.

1. Petracca
2. Brayshaw
3. McCartin
4. Pickett
5. Laverde
6. Goddard
7. De Goey
8. Lever
9. Wright

Wells is famous trying to be too speculative 1st rounders in Tenace,McKay,M.Brown,Lang just pick the best player not someone he feels has a higher upside

Yes.

Corey
Bartel
Kelly
Mackie
Varcoe
Selwood
Taylor
Menzel

And then there was the crazy idea of trading out 2 first rounders for Ottens.

Vastly different teams/development programs which means the proof will be in the pudding in a few years time. Lang would have gotten games @ St Kilda too ... that's just where they are at.

I think they would "Wright" off the first three at least. They will not be available under any circumstances.

Wells list would add Durdin in there and maybe a couple of others like Weller (?) instead.

I reckon their list would be more like (based on best for needs then if they gone best available - thus defender types first for me):

1.Goddard
2.Lever
3.Durdin
4.De Goey
5.Laverde
6.Pickett
7.etc.

Wright is one that is contentious ... he is obviously rated (irrespective of him sliding a little) and he has something to work with obviously. I can only see us picking him up (if still selectable) if Wells thinks he is our first "best available" pick.

Do they generally only invite players that might go top 10?
These are the guys that are apparently invited. 17 players. Not sure why Heeney is going.

Christian Petracca, Paddy McCartin, Angus Brayshaw, Jarrod Pickett, Jordan De Goey, Paul Ahern, Jayden Laverde, Liam Duggan and Lachie Weller.
Darcy Moore, Isaac Heeney, Kyle Langford, Peter Wright, Hugh Goddard, Jake Lever, Sam Durdin, and Caleb Marchbank.

All players in the top 10 are presented on stage with a jumper by the coach. Nobody from outside the list of 17 players will be picked in the top 10. AFL require the clubs to inform them if there is a chance of anybody omitted on the original list that may still be considered a chance.

Hence late invites.

Just refresh my memory: where did Hawthorn got its premiership key defenders (Lake, Gibson, Spangher) from again? Where does it continue to replenish its stocks (Frawley) from? Not the draft.

There is of course the whole issue of trying to crack into a team that won 17 games, compared to trying to crack into a team that won 4 and finished the season 1-16 that is probably worth considering.

That's what I'm thinking :D

Imagine if Wells just wanted to troll the AFL and picked a player who wasn't one of the 17 or something players invited to the draft :p

Do they publish a list of invites? We could probably predict who we will take by looking at the most obscure name.

I think it's time to challenge that thinking , especially this Draft.
What if best available is a key forward?
We have pressing needs at the moment - Mids ( have delisted some and lost Bundy) , Reliable Ruck ( conceivable that Simpson and HMac may not contribute significantly this season) and a KPD - ours are getting old.
Nothing wrong with targetting a specialist rather than trying to mould a versatile player into a position. Hawks have been onto that strategy for a while now and it hasn't done them any harm.

Point taken Bobby, I was probably being a bit negative in relation to the Lang selection, the kid's just got his feet wet and it is a little to soon to be considering him with the likes of Brown, Hamling and Smedts.
I nevertheless believe Wells flattered him with that P16, he had barely played in his U18 year due to injury to top it off.

I'm really liking the pre-season appearance of Thurlow, looks to have muscled up quite a lot, as if he wasn't handsome enough! :D
Just read your post above F2G, that's about everything in a nutshell. :thumbsu:

If the interest in Wright is legit, they would surely consider him a full time ruckman. Our interest in all these talls makes me think the club has very little faith in McIntosh and Simpson beyond next season.
