With only a fortnight until our first NAB Challenge game against West Coast, Thursday’s training session focused on game tactics with some match simulation.

Andrew Carazzo impressed with his leadership and work rate, as did Nick Graham, who showed he is really putting in the hard yards.

Simon White was one of the standouts, playing well in defence and making life difficult for his opponent.

Ciaran Byrne took some time out of his busy schedule to speak about the session.

“Everyone played some really solid football today and the ball was flying around, which was great to see,” Byrne said.

“The new draftees are really showing what they can bring to the group, which is a really positive sign.”

After some work on the ground the team moved into three groups for rotations consisting of weights, balance and core work, as well as conditioning.

The players now have a well deserved three-day break to rejuvenate before another big week in the lead-up to the NAB Challenge.

John Barker having a chat about our pre-season.

Main points:

Q. Where will the improvement come from?
A. Having a healthy list will help. Growth from outside also. We've drafted well also and we may see a some of them this year.
Jones wasn't really playing through his strengths and will get more opportunity at our club.

Q. Turnover rate no good last year. What's going to change?
A. Watched all scores against from last year. Some obvious things to work on. Have done a hell of a lot of work already. Set-ups were no good.

Thanks Harks.

It makes for a good listen and worth the effort.

Some of what Barker is saying, gives one a better idea of who may be earmarked for round 1.
We can't put all that effort into planning only for it to fall down when needed, because someone didn't understand what has been asked of them.

thanks Harker, that gave great insights into the focus behind closed doors

You have to wonder..... Barker saying that they sat down recently and worked out where all the scores from turnovers came from. FFS surely they can do that intraseason? Isnt that what a decent team of assistant coaches intuitively do on the fly, in the heat of the battle? Waiting for the season to be over to do something like this seems incredibly behind the curve.

You need to have players that understand all the nuances of what is being delivered by the coach and several who were afforded games, just couldn't get it.
Just needs one or two players that can't/forget to do what is required of them and systems break down.
They knew the downfalls last year but had little chance of taking control for many reasons, injury and form included.

There is a good reason that all the real training sessions have been tucked away behind closed doors.
Having watched someone like Sheehan closely last year, it was most surprising to see someone so new to the game that gets it, where so many of his much more experienced team-mates didn't.
Many aren't putting Gus in their opening side but I can't see him not being there, if not for any other reason than he knows when to attack and when to defend. That's a pretty good starting point for a player and his kicking doesn't exactly hurt his chances either.

Of course they do, there's match review and they have coaches meetings all the time...That was just an answer for radio about changing scores from turn overs AND having the time to train for ways to fix it.

"We feel like we've drafted well and we've got a little bit of speed that we might see in bits and pieces this year from the young guys."

"We felt with Liam that he probably wasn't played to his strengths, and we just feel with the mechanics and the make up of our forward line, that he's going to play a really solid part and have a really solid impact for us."

"Sometimes, the way we set up our contests, we didn't quite get it right."

"Now that Daisy is really fit, I'd put my hand up to play him off the half back line but will float through the wing and half forward flank too....a little bit on the inside."

Great to hear there has been a big emphasis on turnovers, ball movement, on-field player IQ and stoppage set up. To say we need a huge improvement in these areas is an understatement.

Im slightly concerned about the lack of talk about Viojo-Rainbow and NAB challenge games and options for round one where there is talk about Boekhorst, Smith and others. Do i have a right to be?
Nope - he's 18 and just came into the fold. The talk of players for nab cub has focused on WA boys who will play against West Coast so they can combine it with a trip to see their families. Skittles should play at least once during the NAB cup, and is unlikely to play in the seniors unless he kills it in the VFL.
