Training Preseason 2024

Fremantle are set to offer delisted St Kilda wingman Dan McKenzie a chance to earn a spot on their list this pre-season, reports AFL Media’s Cal Twomey.

McKenzie was let go by the Saints in November after he didn’t feature at senior level in 2023 following repeated calf injuries.

McKenzie travelled to Germany to receive specialist treatment in 2023 and was initially set to train with the Saints in hopes of re-joining the club’s list via the pre-season supplemental selection period.

While he could have taken that avenue, Twomey says McKenzie is now set to join Fremantle’s group of players in hopes of earning an SSP spot with the Dockers.

McKenzie played 73 games for the Saints after making his AFL debut in 2015.

Players can be signed via the SSP until February 19.

Interesting we’ve invited another player this late in the piece. Considering wing and small forward are the two most pressing needs it probably doesn’t bode too well for Voss or SVR
I'm only speculaing but I think coming into the preseason there would have been concerns that Tabs wouldn't be able to get back to full fitness so they brought in Voss and SVR as insurance if Tabs got another injury heading into the season.

I think it's more so that both of the guys on the LTI are key forwards? So it makes sense to replace at least one of them with another tall.

From a Saints fan on Reddit about McKenzie:

"He became one of our most important gameday players in 2022. Our drop-off in form that year aligns perfectly with his ongoing injury issues. He was that important to us.

His running ability is incredible, while his defensive accountability made him such an effective two-way player for us. It also allowed players like Hill and Sinclair to shine coming off half back.

I was devastated to see him get desisted. If he can get his body right, he'll be a fantastic contributor to your footy club. I will add though, his issues are concussion related. I wasn't too surprised when we did let him go."

It also appears Voss despite his height is really more medium tall which we have a lack of depth in. Sturt, Frederick, Banfield.

Sam VR is long term consideration for developing tall forward.

Max Beattie - small forward. I like what I’ve seen. Can come in now and play a role. But also young developing player.

McKenzie - plug and play HBF depth.

I reckon we’ll likely hold one spot for MSD and add one player now. I’ve been wrong before and if Voss continues to show good value in match sims we may end up selecting two. McKenzie still in the mix for Gold Coast.

I'm locked up out on site with covid going stir crazy in my room.
If anybody can give ya boi a crumb of a training report today I will give the most comprehensive report you've ever read next Monday when I'm back in town (quality not guaranteed)

Also, any updates on Freddy would be great. Have not seen him do much this preseason at all and I'm slightly worried

I don't reckon he comes over at all if there's no a very high chance of us signing him tbh.

SVR has stayed home and I don't feel the other two had the options McKenzie has.
It's kind of the opposite, he's all out of options and had to turn to Freo and GC to try and extend his career

If he had options in Melbourne then he likely doesn't come

I don't think it's a sign of him being highly likely to sign, it's moreso we are one of his last options
