PSA for people going to games this wknd - terror threat raised, expect delays at gate.

The Australian terror threat level has been raised from 'medium' to 'high'. This is the first time it has been raised since 2003.

The difference between a 'medium' and 'high' level is;

Medium = "terrorist attack could occur".
High = "terrorist attack is likely".

What this means is that there will be increased security and police presences at seaports, airports, military bases, public buildings and large public gatherings like sporting events. Significant delays are to be expected.

There is no specific reason to be alarmed, or to think it's not safe to attend the footy this weekend!

Simply be aware that it will take longer than usual to get through the gates and to your seat, so plan accordingly and leave early!

"There is no specific reason to be alarmed"

Yeah this thread is just to make sure people know to get to the games early to avoid being held up by the extra security.

"Attention. This is an emergency broadcast, all is well in the school, my authority as principal is total." - Skinner.

From Fairfax:

Will the footy finals be safe to attend?
Acting AFP commissioner Andrew Colvin says that police have plans for major sporting events.
"The message that we wish to pass on this afternoon is a simple one.
"We want people to be more aware, but we also want them to be reassured."

"Likely" means they have credible enough information that someone is planning an attack, but they do not have specific information about who/where/when.

Isn't this a bit of an over-reaction to Richmond losing the elimination final?

If we haven't brought down the power grid and the airports by now, I think they are safe from our fury

No it doesn't.

Yes, it does.

From The Australian;

AUSTRALIA has raised its terrorism alert level to high, Tony Abbott has announced, as he warned of “people with the intent and the capability to mount attacks”.

“We have no specific intelligence of particular plots,” he told reporters in Melbourne.

“What we do have is intelligence that there are people with the intent and the capability to mount attacks.”

The threshold for such a change is that ASIO has credible evidence about the likelihood of a domestic attack.

If that is true then they are being deliberately alarmist.

I tend to agree, but its probably a precaution in advance of the announcement regarding our expanded role against IS. If some of the IS nutbaggers have returned back from Syria, its not ridiculous to think they may try something in response.

This is definitely a big part of it, yup.
