Yea bye - Yea beat Seville last week for the first time since 1977. One of the most unlikely results I can remember. Does it say more about Yea or Seville?
Our hierarchy prefers us not to make specific comments on incidents that happen in the games but I can provide the following from the rule-book (not sure if it fully describes the situation that you saw).
15.7 FREE KICK – DELIBERATE RUSHED BEHIND
15.7.1 When Awarded
A Free Kick shall be awarded against a Player
from the defending Team who intentionally Kicks,
Handballs or forces the football over the attacking
Team’s Goal Line or Behind Line or onto one of the
attacking Team’s Goal Posts. In assessing whether
a Free Kick should be awarded under this Law, the
field Umpire shall give the benefit of the doubt to the
Defender.
This is often called "The AFL Rule" though because the VCFL rulebook also has the following clauses at the very start of the rules section - one of which states:
NOTE: AFL Victoria Country has been granted exemptions to AFL Rules. Please make note of the
following references:
Rule 15.7 Free Kicks - Deliberate Rushed Behind
- Not applicable to WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country Matches.
Can a ruck man punch it through the goals on the full or the boundary line on the full?
Good question Adam H. So are you saying Man In White that you can deliberately rush the ball for a behind without a free kick being awarded? Without commenting on any specific incidents, if you were in charge of a game and saw 1. A player deliberately rush the ball through for a point 2. A ruckman punch the ball through the goals on the full from a stoppage OR 3. A ruckman knock the ball over the boundary on the full, would you pay a free kick?
As the rules stand (and indicated above), in the YV a ruckmen can punch the ball over the scoreline and a behind results. If the ruckman punched it over the boundary line, it's considered deliberate OOB and a free kick.
At AFL level, both instances would result in a free kick.
For Backhoe, examples 1 & 2 would be behinds and example 3 a free kick.
Broken Bone said he hasn't seen a ruck punch over the scoreline for a while. My personal thought is that most players are aware that the AFL has a slightly different application to all the other leagues. Issue is, most probably are not 100% certain which way it falls and as such, take the low risk option and keep the ball in play. I suspect that in recent years the EFL may have also followed the AFL interpretation which adds to a bit of confusion with so many players crossing between the 2 leagues each summer.
