Injury Surgery for Fyfe

Dr Greg Hoy was the shoulder specialist.

I think Fyfe will get the surgery that will restrict his shoulder movement but will limit the chance for this to happen again (aka Walker's shoulder)

Take a moment and treasure the high fliying, one hander marks of 2011 as it we probably have seen the last of this syle of Fyfey. I am damn going to miss all this... :(

Excellent work Seppo.

Nick Lower is listed on the injury list -1 week quad

Looks likely to be either Spurr on Roberton as his replacement this week

lower should eventually come in to take nat's place in the midfield, though, you'd think. i'm confident we've got him covered there, it's the around the ground work that'll be hard to replace.

I was wondering and assume that will be the case. Interesting that what won him over to our selecters (from what I remember) was his ability for a contested grab - he's shown other classy attributes, but his ability to control the airways in the midfield is a massive plus. He will probably never have the flexibility and control that he once had, but he has very good timing and knows how to pick the place to jump and mark the ball. Hopefully he'll still be solid mark unlike your Judd and others who are significantly hampered by their shoulder issues when it comes to contested mark play.

Still, he's a gun either way and I'll look forward to Fyfe with the bionic shoulder or whatever it is that he's going to get done.

How many weeks after shoulder reco can one start running hard again?

I'd be inclined to hold fyfe off until next year, unless we look like capable of impacting the finals.

What's up with mora man.Hayes and krueser same injury and back playing. Why is mora so delayed?

I had client who started running at week 2 (not suggested but she was a very keen runner!). If they set him up on the 'anti-gravity' runner and have his arm in a sling it's feasible to run him quite early. Biggest risk (other than falling somehow) is synovitis. This can just happen anyway but if not handled well leads to a stiff shoulder joint.

The guy he is booked with is a gun and I suspect he will follow up with a physio program designed by lyn Watson. She to is a gun when it comes to shoulders.

Discussed ad nauseum but anyhow

1) He played through a similar problem last year
2) They were playing it by ear and seeing how he pulled up since making a decision to go to surgery mid season is a big call
3) 1-2 weeks extra is nothing compared to the possibility of having him play for that 12 weeks if he pulled up fine

If this 12 weeks is genuine, then why didn't they put him in for surgery a few weeks ago?

Word is that they were trying to manage him through the season then have surgery at the end of the season as West Coast did it successfully with Naitanui last season.

They didn't want to send him off for surgery too early.

However the club knew that one more dislocation meant that he was out for surgery immediately. The same thing happened with Andrew Embley.

The club will tell you that they acted under their medico's instructions and that hind-sight is a wonderful thing.

I think we all knew though that it was simply a matter of time before he dislocated it again.

Not to mention the heart of the bloke. This kid is tough and he wanted to play.

He can come back after 12 weeks, but should he? Can he do anything to help his shoulder cope with the game to try to prevent this situation coming up again?

I'd really like to see him put on a fair bit of muscle on his shoulders before he comes back (#nohomo).

There's no point holding him back for additional weeks "just in case", he may as well never play again right?
But it wouldn't be "just in case". It'd be to further strengthen and condition his shoulder for his long term future. After all he came into this season on the back of a reco with a longer recovery time than 12 weeks and still injured it again, so I can't see how weeks or even months more time to strengthen it wouldn't be beneficial and safer than bringing him in as quick as possible?

I'm not saying extra strength in the shoulder means he won't ever dislocate it again, I just can't see how taking that extra time and building that extra strength and confidence won't be beneficial for him long term. The only negative is the short term - he won't be playing football for Freo as soon, which feels short sighted if this is the ultimate goal: getting him back on the park asap.

I'm no medico though, so maybe I'm wrong in thinking extra recovery time has any benefits/reduced risk of re injuring? My only experience with the matter is friends who have had shoulder reco's/multiple shoulder reco's.

Cheers doc.I'd give fyfe sixteen weeks off.As we know time is the greatset healer of them all.

You would like to see some swollen pulsating delts eh? (#youjustdon'tknowityet) :D

I'm not really a shoulders man. But if I was that way inclined, there'd be a couple of dockers who'd be in front of him ....... That didn't come out right
