Review The Kids Are Alright Good Beveridge Ugly

Outlet players? We obviously made a concerted effort to bypass our outlet players. Eg Dougie had 20 kicks, zero handballs.

It wasn't a handball receive night. It wasn't a run to space and receive the short pass night. They're Atkins' usual sources of possession.
Did I say handball receives?

Good.
Betts. You always know he will kick the hard ones. Freak.
Ellis yolmen. Continues to prove alot of people wrong. Having a great season.
Greenwood. A contested animal. Thriving in the midfield.
Gibbs. So polished and worth everything we traded for him.
Seedsman. Another 600 m gained game. Has had a very consistent year.
Laird. Tough, composed and finds the footy at will. All australian, club champion 2018.

Bad. The weather. The spectacle of the game in the wet conditions.

Ugly. The bulldogs. They are s**t. Bottom 4 lock it in. Beveridge has burnt them out.

Well, that's one of two ways you can get it to an outlet player

And we didn't use that or short passes
Nope, that's simplistic. Ball gets hacked kicked out of congestion. Ball gets punched from a marking contest. Ball gets kicked off the ground. Etc etc. The difference between wet and dry is that there is less system and predictability. It means you have to read the play, work hard and get in good positions.

You must have been a ruckman :p

Would Betts get the 3 Brownlow votes for last night?

No doubt Atkins can be frustrating as when it's his time to go, he often doesn't.

However I think it's dangerous to judge wingmen in modern football game to game, particularly on possession count.

The two players lining up on each wing for the Crows rarely play the same mirrored role.
- One is on the side of the ground with more general play and will get a lot of ball receiving on half back turnovers.
- The other is on the fat side for the switch, holding space to be very attacking out in the open. (Generally where Rat plays)

Depending on the opposition, game strategy, wind and rain, the fat side wing can go from not even seeing the ball to getting used frequently.

Have a look at a stoppage in our D50 when you're next at a game.

So you're saying he should have won more of his own ball

Ok.

So the opposite of an outlet player

Good: the weather, I am old school and remember playing matches in the hills in hail. Seeing wet weather footy is a nice change and a reminder we all love a winter game
- Harto, a reminder to all he is an important cog

Great:
Eddie's back
CEY and Greenwood turning into vital cogs in the engine room, even once Crouch's and Sloan back. These two are finals players, remember that time of year when contested footy is king.
Fog - showing some swagger, a definite half forward not deep forward role for him

Nope. I'm saying he didn't put himself in the right positions to win the ball, through a combination of workrate and brains.
Yep

And that's fine.

But your original comment was was that you still need outlet players in those conditions.

The players who win their own footy excelled. Those who rely on others struggled.

Outlet players play a role in wet conditions, because the #1 key in the wet is skills, but they're not an indication of whether you'll win or lose. The Dogs outlets were great all night - did absolutely nothing to contribute to them winning the match though. In fact they used too many outlets rather than playing simple.

The most important players last night were Greenwood/CEY and Talia/Kelly/Hartigan.

You're splitting hairs mate. That's ok, we both know what I mean
