Anyone know what happened to Linden Stevens?

I have AFL 1997 and L. Stevens was always in the default starting 18, and I always had to change him cause he was never much good ;)

Eccles reminds me alot of, dare I say it, Brett "O Rly?" Reilly or a Nathan van Berlo. Complete young gun.

I have the 1998 Team Photo on my bedroom door, with Barry Stanfield in it. Also the same photo that Picione is clutching his ribs, with Robran chuckling away in the row above.

Anyone know what happened to Ian Downsborough, David Gallagher, Adam Ugrinic and James Byrne(to name a few)?

he had all the talent but no clue upstars didn't he?
he played 3 games, got brownlow votes in 2 of those games, best players in those 2 aswell and then fell of the map from memory

what a waste!

Matthew Shir?

and James Byrne(to name a few)?
Now these are two guys I thought were quality.

Shir impressed me and I thought he had a bit to offer. Had an 18 possession, 7 mark, 1 goal game as a 20 year-old in 2002.

I remember Byrne kicked a beautiful goal against the Dees at the MCG in 2001. Unfortunately he didn’t play too many more games which was a shame because he could find the ball and was a tough nut.

The player I thought had the goods was Lance Picioane. Obviously I was wrong but I still don't understand how someone can play such a good first game as an 18 year old (in round 1 straight out of the draft), where he totally looked liek an experienced regular, and forever struggle from then on.

I'm with you

''this kid can be anything'' sadly he became a nothing

Was never the same after nearly having his neck broken vs GEELONG.

When did this happen?

According to AFL Tables he missed a week after a game vs. Geelong in Round 18 2000, before coming back to register a career high 30 disposals/1 goal game vs the Hawks in Round 21.

Not sure the 'never the same' after his knee/neck/elbow/adam's apple argument holds in any case.

I think he might have moved to Victoria and captained Geelong in the VFL?

Byrne is a funny one.

Recently captained the VFL in their 100+ point demolition of the WAFL - after previously representing the WAFL against the SANFL a few years ago.

What a journeyman, might be a bit of a cash-chasing merc. ;)

Anyone know what happened to Evan Hewitt?

Went home and was/is a dominant CHF in the WAFL.

matt golding plays division 1 for edwardstown in the SAAFL.
kym koster was playing div 6 or 7 last year and fabian francis coaches a div 4 team (salisbury west).
ah, football's a fickle mistress.

 So Golding > Koster? ;)

Kym Koster was/is? the coach and player for SHOCS in div 2 or 3 of the Saafl. Thats a little higher standard to div 6 ;)

He was captain of the U18 SA side in his year of eligibility, but was for some reason overlooked by everyone in the draft before eventually being rookied. Big start, but not much thereafter.

Did a knee playing for Glenelg after dropping off the Crows list and I think retired not long after.

Golding is playing for Edawrdstown in Div 1 (soon to be Div 2) SAAFL. Fairly overwieght but still hard to match up on cause he's a massive unit.

IIRC Gilligan got an earlier call up than planned due to injuries. I think he debuted in the first showdown. Then after one or two other games got dropped back to North in the SANFL.
The Crows wanted him played in the ruck to develop his game so North played him in the Reserves (as we already had Parker and Rosenboom) and either Gilligan or the Crows (think it may have been the Crows) cracked the s***ts and he ended up at the Port Magpies. Don't remember how he went at Port, but I seem to remember he was back in Victoria before the season ended.

Gilligan got his first crack for the Crows in the Carlton M+M game. The week before was the "pathetic Pittman" game vs Richmond, and Pittman missed a fwe with injury after that. Rehn wasn't quite fit by then, and Aaron Keating had had his pelvis broken by his brother in Round 1. We finished up with a Gilligan / Stanfield ruck combo for a few weeks.

I thought he cracked the sads twice - once toward the end of 1997 when he went back for a few weeks, and then early 1998 when he went back for good. There was some sort of kerfuffle because he wanted to play for Frankston in the VFL and the Crows were claiming him as a required player, obviously hoping to get something for him in the draft.

Let me pose this question, who was better?

A. Matthew Golding
B. Lucas Herbert

What a blockbuster battle! Both guys played in 1999 because Rehn and Marsh went down. Marsh was about to make a name for himself and step up and become our #1 ruckman but that injury ruined his career.

Anyway didn't Herbert have a tidy start to his career? 10 possessions, 14 hit-outs, 5 marks and a goal. Sadly it was all downhill from there. :p

Andrew Eccles

I rated the guy - never made it

Yes, I got that one wrong too.

Always thought he showed polish, class, with his onfield work

I could mention a heap of guys, but I’ll keep it short.

Dean Howard actually played for the Crows?

What about Brodie Atkinson? On debut for St. Kilda had 25 possessions and was awarded 2 Brownlow votes. Played the next week but that was it, until the Crows drafted him in 1998. Managed to play 5 games but wasn’t up to the standard.

The award to the guy with the coolest name goes to Balraj Singh. Should’ve kept him for his name alone, oh and he looks a little bit like Franklin. :p

You probably wouldn’t know but did Eccles suffer a knee reconstruction in the game against Richmond in 1999? He was playing superb footy at the time and was even a chance to make the Victorian SOO team. He may have recorded some of his best stats after the injury but it really held him back.
