Greetings to MFC supporters,

With Rivers, Martin, Garland, Wheatley, Whelan, Warnock, Bartram, Bell, C Johnson all the club's quality defenders, just wondering if Frawley worth consider for trade?

Another words, do you think MFC can afford to offload 1 defender for a top pick? Is this a good idea?

Would James Frawley gets MFC a first round pick?

For example, James Frawley to St Kilda for Pick 13 or James Frawley to Hawthorn for Pick 16 or James Frawley to Richmond for Pick 8 etc.

This will give MFC Pick 1, Pick 8 - 16, Pick 17, and Pick 19 = 4 picks in top 19.

Please feel free to comment.

Thank you

Flawed on a couple of points:

Frawley signed a new contract this year therefore can't be traded.

Frawley is a tall defender, Whelan, Bartram, Bell, C Johnson aren't. So pointless comparing them.

I see Frawley developing into a much better option then Warnock, who i think is being highly overrated this year. Sure he competes well, but he's 24 and still undersized, whereas Frawley is about 19 or 20 and looks to have the body type to put on more muscle after another good preseason.

Bit harsh...

Most key defenders take a few seasons to get going. Matty Scarlett was not much chop in his first few seasons. I don't think Darren Glass (who WCE compared Frawley to) set the world on fire in his first couple. Just give the lad a bit of time. He is tall enough, quick enough, and seems to have the desire and ability to become a quality player.

I think he could have benefited from a bit of guidance from more experienced players in the backhalf, but unfortunately, we haven't had good leaders there that would help to fastrack his game.

I think he is one we should definately hold onto, and with a bit of patience and luck, we could have a top line key defender in the coming years...:thumbsu:

I am not sure why people are starting to get carried away with our backline. The lads performed great down there this year no doubt but we can't hang our hat on that. One or two injuries and they are knee deep in it again. I think we need to make our backline as water tight as possible.

Whelan I am guessing has a year to go (I may be wrong) possibly two depending on Bailey's plans. Rivers is injury prone, Bell and Bartram need to improve a fair bit and C Johnson has room for improvement too. Garland and Martin are great and should be the future but they don't need all that pressure on them. Warnock was quite handy this year and should find a spot but at 24, how much more will he improve in future?

Given that we specifically recruited Frawley to be a defender and his height/strength/speed are attributes I think we would be mad to get rid of him.

Make no mistake people, to get a team even close to competing for a flag is going to be bloody tough and will not happen over night or by the end of this year or perhaps even by the end of the following year. Sure we need KPPs (we are severely lacking) but "robbing Peter to pay Paul" isn't the answer at this point in our development. Next year we have the opportunity to really lock down our defence. We can still recruit other players in trades or drafts further down the ground to help us (as we should) but I think we need to consolidate on what we have instead of taking what we have for granted. Leave the backline alone I say.

I see no reason that Frawley, Garland, Martin and Rivers can't all play in the same side. The pace of the first 3 makes them versatile enough, especially if they can develop some running game. Frawley looks a bit lost when he runs with the ball (who doesn't in our side) but he gives it a go and it looked ok in a few games (good against Geelong IIRC), Garland does it a bit as well. Warnock could be the one to trade but he is very honest (as proven by his B&F result) and is useful to keep the pressure on the rest of the guys, Garland could go forward as well but I wouldn't do that yet.

Frawley's development has been a little slow but he also has done some nice stuff, he is probably a safer bet than any player at pick 10-15, which we would be lucky to get for him.

LOL, Frawley would get us a third rounder max! No chance he would get us a 1st rounder...

I really dont rate Frawley and i see him as the weakest part of our backline, im hoping i can be proved wrong.

Some people on here are idiots. Just because a player has not become a star in their first year or two you dont trade them. I think Frawley will be an important player in our backline in a couple of years when he has matured

Correct. For a half a season we thought Carroll was a world class full-back.

i'd trade Frawley for a pick inside the top 20 anything less and i'd prefer to keep him and give him a chance to develop.

No chance in hell. Would only get a 2nd rounder for a start because of a lukewarm start to his career. Not only that, i highly rate him, and think he will be a premier defender. We need defence depth too. The more the better. Look at how easily geelong can cover holes with injury.

Maybe Carlton might be interested in M.Warnock if they get Robbie, they are a key defender short aren't they?

Not really, it's a bit of a myth. Our defenders are very young so they're still developing but they're all in place. We might even end up trading one during the trade period.

Your correction is flawed.

It's only first year players that cannot be traded, the fact he just signed a contract just means he's a contracted player, who can be traded but like any contracted player he would have to agree to the trade.

Fair enough, wasn't sure of that rule. I did think they brought in that rule after Heffernan was traded after signing a new contract.

Yeah and we really screwed Essendon over with that trade didn't we

Keep Frawley as he is still very young & has the ability to be a very good AFL defender. At this stage you wouldn't get much back if you tried to trade him. He should be kept and if he doesn't work out in two seasons time look to trade him to the Gold Coast (will only be 22 then)

ha ha good bump Sylvia Saint. I guess the lesson here is to not judge young key position players too early. I am so happy with how Chip has been able to develop and if he continues to work hard and learn he will be a star of the competition.

I opened this thread ready to give the OP a serve so I was pretty happy to see that is was a bumped one from way back.

Chip is pure rolled gold and we are very lucky to have him.

Ditto. I was already preparing an almighty spray as the page loaded. I swear I’d almost started typing! Frawley would almost have to be the most off limit player on our list.

I also note some wise words in there about judging KPP’s in there first couple of years.
