Rookie Draft Discussion Thread

Yeah we are pretty set for talls although we're pretty set for mids now too. I would have liked us to grab another ruck but happy with mids. That is our biggest deficiency so we needed to look at it and we did.

It all depends on how the recruiters view next year's draft. They may see a few talls they want to look at next year.

we now have four rucks on our list which is standard i think with most teams

josh - established A Class ruck (shut up you josh knockers :p)
wood - promising young ruck man who can hold his own and win against some opponents
bryan - adequate back up
keefe - developing ruck man
thoolen - developing kpp/ ruckman

its amazing how we've set our team up. obvious not every player will make it, but we have a pretty good pool of mids prospects, ruck prospects and tall kpp prospects

Hine, you genious!

Well, even though Blair is a shortarse, i really liked the video highlights of him. We can always do with hard at it, first possession players with pace and good skills. Height will always be a factor but he has some weapons.

Well vinnie pointed out to me on EB&W that we did still draft talls
keefe is 204cm
reed is 193cm
Thoolen 196cm
as rookies

plus reid, anthony, rusling, brown, cloke, and dawes on the senior list

So we drafted alot of mids this year but still got three talls very late in the rookie draft

I was thinking more along the lines of key defenderl. ie. although a bloke like Reed is 193cm, he doesn't play like a key pos. player, unlike a bloke like Hurley who is listed shorter at 192, height is not the defining characteristic of the player. Keefe is a ruckman and Thoolen is the one I see as our project tall KPP (defender) yet he is a known quantity who we were obviously happy to loose.

I guess it's the Thoolen pick, or treatment, that most confuses me. I cant think of too many other rookies who have been dropped in their first year, especially not when they were picked up at 17. I really wonder what the thinking behind this was, especially now that we have re-drafted him and in light of the Brown selection.

so why didnt we do this national draft players? makes no sense - just makes discussion all that harder. anyways enough of this, lets get back to the thread
It doesn't make discussion any harder - If you don't know what player they're talking about, read the subject title in bold at the top of their post.

The reason for it is that the traffic was WAY higher for the ND, and by the end of today, posts in the individual threads would have essentially slowed to a crawl. There will not be enough discussion by the end of today to justify individual threads.

This is an extremely common practice with clubs - Carlton re-drafted Pfeiffer as a rookie, Richmond re-drafted Gourdis, Sydney re-drafted Thornton, and there are even more examples.

I'd say that rookie listing Thoolen is a great move, obviously after one season we wouldn't normally let a ND player go but with the compromised drafts coming up it gave us a chance to get some really good talent on the main list through the ND and we continue to develop Thoolen as we have been.

For some reason I was in the mind set that Thoolen was already a rookie, makes complete sense now, cheers for clarifying that.

Breaking news: Collingwood invests in age old technique for new rookies.

Yeah I think the key here is we felt Thoolen would probably still be off AFL level next year and that we could afford to let him go as it was unlikely anyone would rookie him before us. We delisted him when Leigh Brown became available. It is a short term option in that Brown can play a role for us next year and Thoolen can spend a couple of years developing on the rookie list in the VFL.

i got told on here a while ago that toby was too young to be taken as a rookie last year also. we obviously see something in him that we took him with a ND pick last year.

toby '10!!

you will notice that the heading at the top has now stopped and is the same for all posts??

anyways no point in arguing. ;)

Pretty happy with all that.

Francis - think I mentioned in the mock I thought we were a chance for him. Very much a kid that gets in the action so will be interesting. Seen a bit of him and he is good. Was surprised he was Rd 1 but rookie is a lottery in some ways.

In my mock I had completely forgotten about Bennell as I did it on the run. Seen him twice and he reminded me of Walters actually. really quick and elusive and knows where the goals are. As you saw on the video v SA you kind of feel he could go middle as well.

Blair - thats a bold choice and really proud the club did it. only 172 and I just am not sure a player like that can make it but we will figure it out. He has a real go this kid. I know Steele has 22 but gee I'd like to see this kid get it.

Thoolen was def in the mix - had been kept with the group the whole way post season and Hine said his body needs to develop so thats a good call.

Was surprised we didnt take a tall - must be something in Googs they dont rate (suspect skills) so hope they trial him at VFL level.

Not surprised we didnt take a ruck - we have 4 and Rocca can pinch hit.

Reminds me of a Young Leon

Does Blair remind you of T Shaw?

I agree Hope we give him a go in the VFL and might draft him in the ND next year

Re: Collingwood take Jarryd Blair with second pick in Rookie Draft

Blair seems to have a lot of traits very similar to Boomer Harvey. Moves well laterally and in traffic.

Like the look of him.

I know it's only just happened, but when do these lads recieve their numbers?
I like the look of Bennell.

Intresting to see Patrick Hayes and D Buckley not get drafted - So would they come back to the Pies in the VFL?

Definitely moves like a young Boomer Harvey or even Marc Murphy.

Like the look of him.

Still young and should potentially grow a few cms.

I'm pretty excited by Keeffe just from looking at the way he moved in the few possesions he got at VFL level. Looks like he's a good body shape, and athletic and a big plus is having him train with us and play VFL with us already.

He looks like quite a neat kick too -- most players who have some background in soccer seem to have good footskills, in fact.
