I didnt realise that there was still a dine in pizza hut in Adelaide

The one on Anzac Highway used to be a drive in burger joint called The Burger King. You drove in and ordered your meal like in a drive in movies and these chicks on roller skates and short skirts would deliver it on a tray that attached to your window just like the movies. Im talking early sixties here.

Went os and not sure what happened to it apart from it's not there now of course.

I understand that the owner who apparently always kept the name registered and that's the reason why the US burger giant had to rebrand their franchises here Hunrgy Jacks. The burgers aren't as good either.

They were the days you young whipper snappers.

That must have been pre crows. Way, way back in the day.

Well this port fan extends a big THANKYOU to the crows fan who made this thread.

Haven't been to all you can eat pizza hut in too long.

I miss all you can eat pizza/pasta/soft serves.

Intend on stuffing myself silly there now.

Had no idea one still existed.

Meh

Charlies >>>>> Pizza Hut.

^Used to love going there until my last visit which was a while ago now (end of 06) where the food was notably poorer. Maybe it was just an off night, but it put me off charlies for a while.

Pizza Hut all you can eat is great. Even though 'gourmet' pizza is better, I still have the taste buds to appreciate the good ol takeaway pizza. How can you not love bbq chicken pizza, triple cheese, super supreme etc

Comments Please

Im just wandering if my taste buds have become more sophisticated but was the Pizza in Pizza Hut in the late 80s early 90s really damn good pizza ???
I swear the Pizza was really good back then, now the ingredients taste very processed !?

The pizza from Pizza hut and dominos Im sorry is just crap, Amalfi's or Organic Pizza Bar only for me, which probably is one of many reasons why my BMI is in the healthy range !:)

^I think when you're a kid, lesser sophisticated pizza (or other foods for this matter) taste great, but as you get older and your taste expands and begins to be able to discriminate between different food qualities, the enjoyment of the 'lesser sophisticated' foods begins to dwindle for some. For others, despite being able to discriminate between qualities, this 'dwindling' does not occur (or at least not as fast), which is how I would describe myself.

eg Love a proper home cooked pizza the best, but still enjoy the fast food pizza despite being able to tell the difference in quality. Ditto with home cooked pasta and pasta when eating out at certain places. etc etc

One observation is that those older than me, say 35 y.o's and above, seem to have dwindled completely, so can't stand takeaway quality AT ALL no matter the food, so perhaps this is a progressive phenomenon that occurs with age?

Hopefully what I just wrote makes sense (am busy doing a bunch of crap)

thanks I get what your saying and agree to it to a large extent.

but I really do believe Pizzas were much better years ago compared todays Pizza Hut Pizzas. they put the process in pizzas !

I have heard that Dominos would use tofu for ham and use ham flavouring a few years back????

Can someone verify this?

Yeah i agree. The older you get and experience different cultures of food, the larger your palate gets and you discover that a cheese pizza from the Hut isn’t so good after all.

The last dine in Pizza Hut I went to was in Reykjavik, second week of November. It's actually in the bottom corner of the Nordica Hilton, very convenient on that first night.

The Dine In huts are still a big thing everywhere else, they've just died here in Australia.

I also only go to a local pizza bar, makes some great ones, and Aussie Pizza House on Hindley St from time to time. I can't stand Dominos pizzas, and the Hut aren't much better.

Speaking of demolished huts, I really wish they'd knock over the old Pizza Hut building at junk food junction, it's an eyesore, looks like a crack den with the filthy and tagged outside, cheap fences, broken windows and gutted interior.

IMO, that's what caused the demise of the Pizza Hut restaurants. Charlies (and other buffet places) came in with a bigger variety and killed off Pizza Hut. The buffet though was more of a craze (ala Cafes currently), with many buffets (including several Charlies) reverting back to bistro's. The original Charlies at Paralowie still exists, as does the one at Brighton I believe.

An excellent place which has a Sizzler style set-up (main meal plus massive salad/dessert bars) is the Gawler Arms - your main meal includes their soup/vegetable/salad/dessert bar. Been out there a few times and it's fantastic.

I discovered the Marion Pizza Hut a couple of years ago and still head down there every now and then.

Yep the charlies at Paralowie and Brighton are still there. There is also one at St Peters also on Payneham Road or at least there was a couple of years ago.

I think what also evenutally killed off the pizza hut dine in restaurants was a cultural change of pizza becoming a home delivered rather than something that you went to a dine in restaurant for. The dial a pizza business quickly outgrew the dine in business so most franchise operators realised that by going to a smaller venue and only doing pick up and delivery of pizza that it was far more profitable than operating a combined dine in and delivery restaurant. I remember hearing that Pizza Hut originally brought the works concept in the hope that it would stop the downturn or people choosing home delivery rather than dining in.

I live 70 meters from this Pizza Hut. Barely ever dine in there though. Always partys or a bunch of shool kids there though. Would make some serious coin.

I went to the said Pizza Hut a few months back after finding out it was open...and there was hardl any Pizzas being brought out or anything. Basically was walking up to the self-serve and looking at the same pizzas that were there 20 mins before hand. All you can drink creaming soda thogh....:thumbsu: :p

Used to have free-reign in that place every sunday morning while my dad did the cleaning there.........sad to hear.

Remember the fun pages u could do while u were waiting for your meal ?? :thumbsu:

Nope that one's become a steakhouse now.

Despite living around the corner from the Paralowie Charlies I haven't been there in 2 years, (when my aunt from Belfast was over). I agree with the earlier statement about more sophisticated tastes - Charlies was it and a bit when I was 12, now I drive past it and think meh.

Back when I was a kid, Pizza Hut were pretty much the only pizza joint in town and gourmet pizzas were unheard of. They used to charge around $12-14 for a pizza and it actually had topping on it.

Today, PH has competition from all over the place - particularly the likes of Eagle Boys and Dominos. As a result, the price has plumeted. However, with the prices dropping so has the profitability. The end result is that they've cut costs. One way of doing this was by reducing the amount of topping you get on your pizza. Today they charge an extra $2 for "extra topping", which just brings the topping level back to where it was 15 years ago on a standard pizza.

Many fond memories of going to the pizza hut in Hindley St on a Tuesday night, to escape the horrible concoctions the college kitchen conjured up. Back in the days when they brought the pizza to your table, but you only had the choice of Hawaiian or Supreme (pan pizza only) for all-you-can-eat Tuesday nights.

Wasn't Marcelina's (however you spell it) open back then on Hindley St?? Surely the Hut were not on par with them in the "olden days".

I make my own after buying the dough from Woolies;)

Its easy.

topjars pizza recipe

  • Use plenty of flour to roll out the dough.(1 bags makes 2)
  • Spray the pizza trays with oil.
  • I use basil and garlic tomatoes (essential) for the pizza bases. ( 1 tin )
  • Spread 1/2 bag Mozarella Cheese over both bases...(Woolies brand - its actually expensive already shredded but convenient.
  • Top with Kalieskes (sp?) Pepperoni sliced thin....Kalamata Olives non pitted
  • Anchovys and then 2 handfuls of the same cheese lightly across both pizas.
  • Dust with oregano and cook for 15 minutes in a 180 o PREHEATED Oven.
  • Take them off the trays and let the bottoms toast a further 10 mins -until golden.....yummmy!

Try it at home-I'll guarentee you wont look back:thumbsu:

Getting rid of Pizza Hut Works Menu and Sizzler is one of the worst things that has ever happened in this state.
Agree :thumbsu:

1. Getting rid of Pizza Hut Works Menu
2. No more Sizzler
3. Ash Wednesday
4. State Bank Collapse
5. Port Power 2004 flag

The last time I had a pizza hut pizza was last year and it was the most disgraceful pizza ive ever seen in my life. Had a supreme. 3 pieces literally had only 4 of those tiny 1cm squares of capsicum on it. Thats it. I opened the box, laughed, then ran out and gave it back to the driver and got my money back. My housemate kept his, which was a meatlovers and equally short on any sort of topping.

I sometimes wonder back to when I was younger and going to Pizza Hut was the shiznit, whether their pizzas back then were equally shithouse, or whether they were actually better. I do remember that when I used to go there, they did have toppings, unlike now.

Id rather have 2 slices of a good local pizza bar pizza (I used to live in Seaton where there was plenty of good ones around - Kidman Park Pizza House, Saints Pizza and La Romano were the pick of the bunch...not so many now I live in Pirie...so pretty much solely make my own now) than all you can eat pizza hut shit any day of the week.

+1 for Amalfi's. Best pizza ever...and their pasta isnt far off either. Great wine list too.

can't believe there is still a pizza hut, woohoo gonna have to go there now. last time we went to one was when we lived at blair athol and the enfield pizza hut was still going, not sure when that closed but it would have been around 2000 when we built our house, its a rays outdoor now. as for sizzler i worked at modbury sizzler for 6 years from 91 to 97, there were only two stores in sa that made a profit, modbury and parkside the others were all duds.

Slightly off topic, but the Charlies that was just off Port Rush road, is now the Payneham Tavern, Good place to eat and watch games in the sports bar. Food is actually very good there, and reasonably priced.
