Re: Help me pick a team!

Just last year I faced the same team selection dilemma.

It's funny that Sav Rocca was a big reason for me following the Eagles, considering he gets on about 5 times a game.

But it's all worked out well and I'll never change now. :)

Funny indeed.. recall attending the inaugural ANZAC Day clash from the MCC section (even offered Dipper a tasty chocolate cookie) anyway, Sav totally hammered the Bombers... infact Sav has a scorching record etched on many Bomber fans minds.. ;) Once bitten, many Times Shy eh Warney?.. :p

Just before my time Woodson. Only remember seeing him play as a Roo. ;)

EDIT: Well mostly, anyway. Certainly don't remember anything from the mid 90's.

Re: Help me pick a team!

I too am at odds with who to choose to support, my girlfriend is from Wisconsin and she and her whole family go for Green Bay so thats an easy choice but to be honest I like inner family rivalries (my Dad goes for the Maggies). So I am thinking of someone else.

St.Louis supporter in NHL so Rams maybe? Blue Jays fan in MLB so Buffalo perhaps? The other one I was thinking was seeing as week 2 will be my first game of NFL live vs the Bengals at Lambeau I was thinking maybe Cincy? That way I can be the idiot who gets beat up at a Packers game cheering on the opposition. Which of those 3 do you think will bring the most long term heartache, cause thats kind of where i want to head... no fun supporting a team 1 season and seeing them win it all :D

Any help, greatly welcomed.

Re: Help me pick a team!

St Louis is a great choice - great future and a new coach which has made all of the right moves. In terms of long term heartache - five wins in the last two seasons.

If you want to create an interfamily rivalry, look at teams within the Packers division. These teams are Vikings, Bears and Lions. They will also offer the heartache you are as the Lions are coming off a 0-16 season, Vikings having Favre - the Packers former QB which could probably get you dumped by your GF for supporting them and the Bears which are the pinnacle of meh.

The Bengals are seen as a team with undisciplined trash playing for them such as Chad OchoCinco. They are usually a good team that underachieves due to a few break downs. Buffalo are seen as a team without any star factor (they overpaid an over the hill hack to promote the team and gave him the key to the city). Your best off avoiding those teams.

If that's the case, go for Minnesota or Chicago!

Re: Help me pick a team!

We haven't really discussed picking College teams. For those who closely follow NCAA football teams, how'd you decide?

Re: Help me pick a team!

Sunday red, Larkis: thanks for the tips. I think after reading your replies I might go with the Vikings. Favre, a rival of Green Bay, plus a Peterson jersey would be pretty awesome. Think that might be the way to go. Ran it by my girlfriend's father and he told me "if i wear that crap jersey around to dinner then i will be turfed out on my ass"....seems like a perfect fit :D

Simple decision for me went with the University of Michigan, did a year's exchange there so it was a no brainer.

If only I had some connection to anywhere :). For me it is a choice to team quality with or without geography. I used to go for any team in the New England area. After choosing the Giants as my NFL team, I figured I'd go with a New York Div I team, but most are way upstate or in New Jersey. There is always Rutgers (which would be nice). Not that interested in the Columbia Lions.

Actually, the fact that Army is at West Point appeals. I don't know if Army will ever win anything, but huge tradition and I like the Armed Forces. Go Army, beat Navy!

Seriously though, I'll have to see what teams I can watch this season and see if any grab me.

any interest in Boston College? I guess it depends if your NCAA interest extends past football, if it does then BC is a pretty good choice as you have major success currently in ice hockey and baseball. Even football wise the school is successful, maybe not recently but much more known for winning than Rutgers or Syracuse....and definitely Army! :p

I guess, as you said though, the best way to go is probably watch some games this season and see what teams appeal. Always a good thing if your favourite team occasionally appears on the TV.

My friend was going to go with Air Force before he watched some NCAA football and is now in love with Penn State. So thats a never fail way to go about it.

Re: Help me pick a team!

I know half a dozen or so exchange students who did their exchange at my uni from Purdue, so I have a soft spot there as far as college goes. I don't know if Purdue are any good though lol.

They were the ones who first got me to sit down and watch an NFL match with and first sparked the interest. I think this game was Jets vs. Giants in 2007 - it was Labour Day weekend here - as I remember them going on about it being a rare matchup.

The Boilermakers!!!

lol they are pretty good at basketball. I think they are right up there in terms of the most Div 1 NCAA college championships. Football wise they struggled for a while but they have been ok the last 10 years or so, I think other than when Michigan beat them in 2005 they have had a bowl appearance of some sort or other all 10 of those years. Which is something they didnt get to participate in for a decade or so until the mid 90s. So they aren't terrible by any means. They kick ass at Engineering too btw. Go Booksmarts!

Def. Tier II as far as Div I goes but not such a bad football team. Kyle Orton played his college ball there.

That said, the only college team worth following is Notre Dame, a arch rival of Purdue.

High school friend got a scholarship to Iowa. Was about the time I was starting to get into the NFL, so my interest in the Hawkeyes grew at the same time as my interest in the game.
