I know we have trade week first but I've started watching all the youtube vids of the contenders for our early picks in this years draft.
Obviously Morabito is the early favourite for us at 4 but there is the chance that Richmond will take him (Melbourne Scully / Trengrove).
I've got my heart set on another mid with this pick, I'd be very surprised if we were to take a tall, can't say Butcher thrills me on the available evidence.
Lucas is the obvious choice here but I confess to not having seen much of him this year as I didn't see any Sharks games. From the 18's stuff on Youtube he looks to be a pretty ordinary kick and we really don't want players who can't kick.
I like the look of this lad a lot (Dustin Martin).

Seems to have Lucas covered in most areas but of course this is against players his own age perhaps regular Sharks watchers have a better idea of Lucas's skills against Men? He just doesn't look to get much penetration in his kicking and that worries me.

Would love to get morabito and if not i hope butcher is the real deal, has all the right attributes to be a gun fwd but can he step up at the next level? Dustin Martin is going to be a great player and would also be solid pick at 4

Just had a look at Butcher for the first time, can't see what all the talk is about, can't be too many forwards around. Definately go with a mid for the first pick then look at kpp. I will be shattered if we get an average looking victorian with such a valued pick. Dustin Martin looked pretty good, has nice footskills.

Do you guys believe Morabito compliment our emerging midfield?

He would compliment it in as much as he is a tall fast midfielder, which we lack (Apart from playing Pav in the midfield). If he can play the old "ruck-rover" position in a couple of years time then he can make a huge difference to this side, not in the least release Pav up forward. For mine he is fairly good around the stoppages, so this should be the aim.

FWIW most phantom drafts have Richmond taking Dustin Martin at 3 - not sure if they're just following each other or it's rumoured Martin is the Tigers preference.

Just seen a bit of Rohan from Vic Country , tall takes a good mark and has amazing speed and likes to take them on.

Butcher looks fine to me ...cops a double team at TAC level by all accounts and still kicks a few each game. Struggled with injury at last years champs.

If pick 4 comes around and the club feels he is the best option - at least we are adding a likely KP player anything after round 2 becomes very speculative with bigs.

I still hope Richmond pull the trigger on him and leave us with a likely mid.

Really? All the ones I've seen have them taking Butcher or Morabito.
I hope they take Butcher leaving us with Mora but this thread was really supposed to be what if they take Mora? Who is the next best for us. If they take Martin that's the same result, we get Morabito.

I have full faith in our recruiting staff. We killed it in the last draft, and we've already seen that Hill was the right choice at 3 last year, despite most of last years phantom drafts having him at ~15. Whilst at the moment I'd like Morabito at our pick, I won't be unhappy if we take Cunnington or Panos or Stevens or Duncan; the recruiters have a far better knowledge of these kids and I'm happy to back them in, no matter who they choose.

I love having Hill - though if we had taken Rich there would not be too many tears either.

We really need to score with pick 4, the names Dunn and Drum haunt my thoughts.

What about Talia at 4? Can play both ends and he's been pretty impressive when I've seen him play? Just food for thought.

Very risky taking a bloke called Cunnington. Would have had a hard enough time at school, and if he turns out to be a dud the headlines and puns will be unforgiving. Go with Morabito, much safer name.

Hopefully we pick up Morabito. Hill, Palmer, Ibbotson and Morabito would be a deadly quick midfield and cause nightmare match ups for the opposition. His fast pace is perfectly suited for Subiaco oval.

Sadly for us, any pick after we got Pavlich has been speculative with bigs. Brown, Polak, Murphy, Campbell, Drum were all taken early-ish if not very early. I don't know if it is a development issue with the club and young talls, or if they are just unpredictable, but we have failed with KPP's. Our only decent KPP's are either Pavlich, or we traded to get them.

The thing I like about Morabito is that potentially he could play a variety of roles, including causing some damage in the forward line given his speed and size. That versatility, assuming he is first and foremost a decent midfielder, is very attractive.

Interesting article by Emma Quayle, in regards to the lack of height in this years draft.

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/rfnews/a-short-draft/2009/09/28/1253989871763.html

The number of smalls invited to the camp is, in one sense, a reflection of how few star tall prospects are lurking in this year's draft pool. Eight ruckman will be tested this week, but only three of them are 198 centimetres or taller and only two or three would have been drafted had they been in last year's draft pool, if that. The clubs who loaded up on tall prospects last year were smart.

Not good news for us there, as we went very small last year. Due to the lack of depth in talls, it would be a big call to overlook Butcher (if Morabito was already gone). Tall forwards will essentially be gone by pick 25, tall defenders will be available in the 3rd and 4th rounds but they'll be speculative. While I think we should be happy with Bradley in regards to rucks...

Also interesting to note that last year only 6 players were invited to the draft camp who were under 180cm...and we drafted 3 of them.

We also had possibly the slowest team in the league until last years draft...

Im certain we will go Mid - Tall with our first two picks, perhaps if they really are serious about building a team we will see a hard decision made and a player like schammer packaged with drum in the hopes of securing a pick between 10-20...

On another note, Geelong have once again proved that you do not need an elite tall to win a grand final.. You merely need one to take a few good grabs and put in an honest contest when needed. As for the smalls we drafted, wouldn't change it for the world, our team will be a nightmare to control when these guys are up and going

Will be interesting to see how Black, Panos and Butcher go at the draft camp.

Black may well do a Hill and be in line for our pick 4.

I wouldn't exactly say Suban or Walters are fast though...

Perfect draft for us would have to Morabito and Black with our first two picks. But for that to happen we might need to get into Black's ear, and get him to under perform at the draft camp...

If Black is gone, there is probably a good chance of Griffiths being the only tall (worthy of a top 25 pick) left come our second rounder. And if that is the case, do we take the injury prone tall from interstate with big potential? Or do we play safe, and take another midfielder (Jetta, Melksham, Bastinac, Duncan)?

I'd like to think we would go mid and tall with our first two picks, but for me a lot will depend on whether or not Black, Panos and Carlisle are available or not. And if they are gone, we might be better to take another mid in the second round, and go for Houghton in the third.

Getting another second rounder will be important for our draft, especially if it means drafting someone like Fyfe who could fill either role if need be.

Scarlett is probably rated higher by most people than you supersonic, and Mackie isn't too shabby either, unless you are talking tall forwards. But even if you are there are a few factors which are worth considering;

- not a great day weather-wise for tall forwards, so if you get to a grand final without decent tall forwards, and if the weather stays lousy, then perhaps you don't need an elite tall forward.
- Geelong have an incredible midfield, plus strength all over the ground, so maybe if you have the best ever midfield you don't need an elite tall forward, in a similar way to WC's GF.
- Their forward line is probably their weakest area, but Mooney, Johnson, Rooke and probably even Hawkins would be first picked if they were playing in our forward line.
