Fact Most goals in a game

what was bernies years like either side of that 167?

In doing my Coleman reading, the two years before he played for Essendon (1947 & 1948) he kicked 136 & 160 for Hastings...

Then again it was a mere mornington league, but the fact that he was able to coming into a then VFL side and jagg a lazy 100 in his debut year and then to prove he wasn't a fluke he backed it up with 120 the year after... 516 goals in 4 years of football...

Don't know the full details but from Wiki:

He was the leading goalkicker for South Fremantle in all ten seasons that he played at the club, kicking over 100 goals in five seasons.[5] He was only held goalless in a match of 4 occasions.[4]

disagree.

champion full forwards don't grow on trees.
(the champion full forwards are the ones who average 4+ per game)

we don't have any "champion" full forwards playing the game now and if you think we do then you mustn't have seen some of the real freak goalkickers.

the time will come again, just don't know when.

we've really only had 4 era's of champion full forwards
the coventry, pratt era
the coleman era
the hudson, mckenna era
the lockett, dustall, ablett era.

Agree entirely. If Franklin and Fevola can kick tons (or close to it in Fevola's case) then Lockett, Ablett and Dunstall would still be kicking them as they were comfortably better footballers.

Was Ablett in 1993 the only one of these that came in a losing side?

Bob Pratt was great for South, also played for Coburg in the VFA for a couple of seasons...

In 1941 kicked 22 in a game against Sandringham, a lazy 183 in the same year... Pretty handy season...

I remember the Tony Lockett game where he kicked 16 straight. The next week he had reached some incredible number of goals kicked straight without a behind.

I also remember that game was against Fitzroy and they were a rabble. Would have easily kicked 20 but was taken from the field for over 5 minutes (maybe as much as 10) when the wrong message was sent out with the runner. Right when he was firing goals relentlessly. At least that's what I can remember.

I see your Bernie Naylor and Gordon Coventry and raise you Ken Farmer (North Adelaide). Kicked 23.6 against West Torrens out of a total of 26.11.

Career.

1929 62 goals
1930 105
1931 126
1932 102
1933 112
1934 106
1935 128
1936 134
1937 108
1938 112
1939 113
1940 123
1941 86

played for 13 seasons, kicked 1419 goals in 224 games at an average of 6.33 goals per game. Kicked another 86 in 17 State games. Once got stretchered off the ground in the first 10 mins of the game and was the only time he didn't kick a goal in a match.

Chelsworthgale, you're one Carlton supporters that I hold in high regard.
You've saved me a lot of time and effort by doing what I would have done in quelling the egomaniacal rantings of the Pies fans.

In Coleman's era it was very tough to kick the ton. I think he was the only player in a 25+ year span to kick a hundred in a season.

Either he was the only decent forward in twenty five years, or he was exceptional!

N.Burgan is a bit stiff to miss out on getting named in the 6 best players on the ground after kicking 11!

ahh yes bias view points... good work... do some research next time...

Gordon Coventry
Goals: 1299
Games: 306
1920-1937 (17 Years)
Goals per year: 76.4
Goals per match: 4.25

John Coleman
Goals: 537
Games: 98
1949-1954 (5 Years)
Goals per year: 107.4
Goals per match: 5.48

Yeah I wonder why they named it the Coleman Medal... so undeserving John Coleman was to be bestowed with this honor hey?

The greatest full forwards of all time are: Lockett, Coventry and Dunstall due to the totals over the length of their career which is why they are "great". There is a reason why at Docklands there is a Coventry and a Lockett end as opposed to a Coleman and a Clive Waterhouse end.

Coleman was obviously exceptional and had his body have held up could possibly have been mentioned in such company. But since he only lasted 5 years in the league and didn't kick the sheer total volume of goals the other 3 legendary forwards kicked he doesn't stack up in comparison.

Now what's that award the AFL gives to the season's leading goal scorer called again...

Oh dear the Collingwood version of Graham Cornes

Wut?

He may be a pompous tool, but he could seriously play. Going over to North at age 31 and averaging 2 goals a game played out of position in a forward pocket before falling out with Barassi doesn't change that fact.

Surprising thing about Bode is that he has only kicked 54 goals for the season from 15 games so when you take out that bag its only 23 goals from 14 games his previous best for the year is 3 bags of 4.

OK. but the coleman medal is for the most goals in a year. not in a career. so can we put this to bed yet?
