End of an era for Geelong?

This will likely be the Cats last chance to forge a dynasty for the ages. If they don't win 3 flags with this side it will likely be seen as an underachievement.
I think this is the last serious tilt for a while.

However to call two flags from a window and underachievement is ludicrous.

Going on probabilities it is about right. We have finished top twice, top two on four occasions, and thus top four on four occasions. Two flags looks about par from those remarkable achievements.

If i see a flag before i die ill be happy. In no way have Geelong underachieved.

Agree that underachievement is a very harsh description. Winning a premiership should dispel that notion straight away.

But if we're talking cementing Geelong's place as one of the best teams in history, then I think your current record will show you're one flag short of being regarded in that light.

I guess you can say Geelong is a victim of it's H&A dominance, so there's an expectation that a flag should follow, especially after demolishing everyone in the 07 finals campaign.

Geelong's era isn't over yet, especially seeing as they will be playing the pies next week in a prelim, for a shot at a team that both Collingwood and Geelong would be ultra confident in beating on Grand Final day (Stkilda).

Simply put, the winner of next weeks Collingwood vs Geelong prelim (sorry Freo it is going to happen) will win the GF, quite comfortably IMO, so really, Geelong are only 1 tough win away from being an "immortal" team.

I guess it depends on how you measure greatness. A team of Geelong's dominance would probably want to cash in with 3 flags.

When you look at recent history, only Brisbane in 2001-4 have been more successful than we have been, and should we make the grand final and win this year (a long shot now, but still possible), we will equal their record of three flags in four years.

Essendon finished top each year between 1999 and 2001, and only won 1 flag and made 2 grand finals. Port Adelaide were minor premiers each year between 2002 and 2004, and only made the one grand final for 1 flag. Adelaide finished top two in 2005 and 2006 and didn't make the grand final either year. Collingwood made 2 grand finals in 2002 and 2003, then finished 13th the following year. Hawthorn won the flag in 2008, missed the finals completely the following year and this year were bundled out in the first final.

Compare all those with Geelong's 4 top four finishes and 3 grand finals thus far for two premierships.

But we have only finished top twice. Going on expectations from this, you'd assume two premierships - which we have.

I can remember people writing us off late last year after we seemingly limped into the finals. Then they questioned whether we'd have the hunger and desire to stay at the top for a 4th consecutive year. Then we've been questioned somewhat after every loss this year.

In other words, we've been written off numerous times in the past 12 months or so.

I think being questioned about the continued ability to have the ultimate success is a far cry from being written off. They're not the same thing

Back on topic ...
Whether Geelong win the GF again this year or not, they've clearly been the best team for the past 4 years and already have 2 premierships to show for it. I'd like that return on investment

Whether this is the end of an era for Geelong or not? Ask me again Saturday morning

I wonder if the Bulldogs and Saints supporters wish their sides could underachieve like ours.

We have two flags and two minor premierships so I'm pretty happy with that. We should have won in '08, but in saying that, St. Kilda should have won in '09 and didn't.

I wouldn't write us off yet though. It's a long, hard road this year but hopefully we can take it.

Underachievers? no, just no. I'm very happy with what we have and believe success this year would simply be a bonus. If we don't win I will still be enormously proud of my team over the last 4 years.

Even if they were to win their 3rd this year, you couldn't put them on the same level as Brisbane. 3 in a row is a ridiculous achievement when you consider the sides that have tried and failed.

Sure this is probably their last chance with this group of players to snag another premiership, but in no way would I say they underachieved! Sheesh!

Whether it is this year, next year or the year after, I don't care because it has been f*cking awesome!

Only an idiot would say winning 2 flags is an underachievement. Stock standard post from you.

Incorrect. They would be equal to the Brisbane side of 01-04. 4 Grand finals in a row with a 75% success rate.

I don't think people realise how difficult it is to win premierships. It took sydney 72 years between there 2 recent flags. They made 2 grand finals in between. Compare that to Geellong. 2 Flags in 3 years and 3 staright Grand finals. Yes there record may not be in the samne class of the hawks of the 80's of melbourne of the 50's but considering how long some wait for success Gellong's record over the last 4 years are definately not an underachivement.

The nature of the beast says it is impossible to remain at the top of the moutain for long. They are already a modern great as winning 2 flags from 3 grand finals is a monumental effort. My own team had an era that only produced the one flag from a freakish team so I take my hat off to the Cats. I think Collingwood will dominate for 2 or 3 seasons beginning next year. This year is still wide open between the top 3 sides.

I rate Geelongs success much higher.

Brisbane Lions was basically the best of 2 AFL teams coming together with significant salary cap concessions and trading options.

Geelong built up via the draft system and 1 very handy father/son pick up.

Brisbane had a salary cap advantage. Geelong has already gone past them IMO. However, in Brisbane's defence they beat the best single season team ever for their first flag.

hodgepodge, treat the new thread button like the football was treated by your team against fremantle..dont go near the f*** thing

We're all thinking it.

A tough game against Collingwood if they get over Fremantle, then most likely a tough game against StKilda if they get over Collingwood.

Would do very well to win the premiership this year.

Next year they will likely lose Ablett. The ageing list will become a bigger concern, with Scarlett, Milburn, Mooney, Ottens going further into their 30s. Wojincski, Corey, Hunt, Rooke, Chapman, etc hitting 30 or on the verge.

This very well maybe the last roll of the dice for this Geelong team but what they have been able to achieve has been nothing short of spectacular. Three Grand Finals in a row and in a position to maybe challenge for a fourth though to get there wont be easy.

A better question is has the current Hawthorn team underachieved with it's current list. After 2008 all we heard was how the Hawks were set up to dominate the competition for the next few years a host of star players under 30 a coach that revolutionised the way the game was played and where has it gotten them 2009 missed the finals and 2010 a loss in the first week of the finals.

As a Hawthorn Fan HP do you consider the current situation the Hawks are in a waste of 2 years? Be it through poor list management, players settling on past deeds and loosing the hunger, a coach that hasn't developed the game play from 2008 what is your opinion on the Hawks for there lack of ability to dominate the competition?
