Was just reading through our forum, and came across some interviews from our newest recruits:

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?p=23228268#post23228268

Most of the new guys were Pies supporters growing up!

Also Kruezer was a mad Collingwood fan as a kid. Lachie Henderson as well.

You guys know if any players on your list were Blues fans in a past life pre getting drafted?

It mostly has to do with which club was dominating when the kids started getting into football (when they were 6-10 years old) so it makes sense a lot of new recruits follow the Pies. A few years ago a lot of new players were Bomber supporters etc.

I don't know about any Pies players supporting Carlton, although you'd probably find the players from the 2002-04 drafts were more Carlton fans because of 1995 (Goddard comes to mind).

I guess with how the Blues went for some time it might take a while until they start appearing again?

To be fair, we've only been crap since 2001 so I wouldnt have thought it would impact that much on support? Most (or many) kids tend to follow the same team as Dad as well.

Henderson and Kruezer both came from mad Collingwood families (must suck for the families!).

Demographically, you would have to have a few on your list that were Carlton supporters (or god help us all Essendon supporters)?

Kouta & Christou were massive Collingwood fans. Christou even refused to touch Daicos circa 92' when he kicked a goal at VFL Park from the pocket as he was still his idol. Rocked up to a Carlton U19's game in a Collingwood jumper once too.

Funniest thing about Carlton is that Wayne Harmes grew up as a Richmond supporter (his uncle Len Smith was mainly Richmond) & stopped supporting them whilst playing. As soon as he retired, he went back to supporting Richmond. I don't blame him...

True story this. I was surprised when I heard it myself.

So no Carlton fans amongst your lot?

Wonder if there's a policy of not drafting them!

Not sure about Pendles, but I think I read somewhere Thomas was an Essendon fan

Is it just me or were Heppell and Thomas seperated at birth:

God, he still looks young doesnt he?

So by last count we have no fewer that 7 on our list that are avowed ex Pies supporters.

Bit blown away that you guys havent anyone of note who is an ex Blue.

Maybe theyre keeping it quiet!

Thomas' idol is Ablett Snr that has a lot to do with growing up around Drouin, so he could of followed the cats.

Pendles was a big Dees fan growing up.

Steele followed the bombers.

Blair's grandpa played for Hawthorn and he says Crawf is an idol of his so we can say he followed the hawks.

Nathan Brown verified as a bluebagger.

A Carlton supporter, Brown was drafted to Collingwood with selection 10 in the National Draft.

Thats 1 at least. I was starting to think you guys had a policy of not recruiting Carlton supporters!

Jeese, we seem to draft mainly Pies supporters from our Victorian draftees. And a lot of West Aussies (mostly WCE supporters growing up).

Juddy was keen on Melbourne as a kid. Fev was a big Saints fan. I think Murphy was a Roys/ Lions fan (assuming he followed his old man, although he certainly didnt follow him to the Lions). Gibbs was hot for Adelaide, Yarran was big on the Eagles.

I can only think of one on our list confirmed Carlton growing up and thats Waite (for obvious reasons).

I still feel bad for Goddard. Crazy mad Blues fan growing up, and he had his bags all but packed to come to Princes park pre draft. Watching the blues struggle all year, and his chances of getting picked up as number 1 strengthen, then told by the club he was a cert for pick one. Mustve been stoked. Then at the 11th hour he gets informed it wasnt going to happen due to the AFL stripping us of the pick.

Sidebottom was an Essendon fan. Cam Wood and Ben Johnson were Pies fans, they're the only ones I can think of. Probably whoever is from WA supported the Eagles.
Cameron Wood barracked for Richmond. Heath Shaw was a Collingwood supporter of course.
What about Pendles and Thomas?
Pendlebury barracked for Melbourne. Thomas barracked for Geelong.

you say it like it was something bad. :p

Tom Gordon was/is, which I assume is the reason he was delisted. :p

I remember reading Pendles barracked for Melbourne as a Kid
