The umpiring was shit, but I suspect they're trialling new interpretations of the holding the ball rule or something which would explain it. Mooney went up for a jump-ball and was tackled as he came down with it, and had holding-the-ball paid in a millisecond. Tom Young similarly was tackled with no prior opportunity by about five guys and would have been lucky if he could move his arms at all... holding the ball. That high contact free against Luke Ball... laughable. Jackson Paine got buried in the back more than a couple of times, poor kid must have thought he was Chris Tarrant with the help he got.
Having said that, it all matters for nought. Just give me some good news on MacAffer, damn it.
Just to go against the grain, I'm absolutely thrilled with tonight. Our young lads defeated GWS' crop of young talent and a 3/4 strength bulldogs side. If nothing else, it suggests that when GC and GWS mature and supposedly 'dominate' the league, we won't be too far behind them.
Yagmoor, Williams, Witts, Paine, Ceglar, Hartley, Sinclair, Young et al...sweet.

GWS played brilliantly first up, so kudos to them.
In saying that I was impressed by little tonight and disappointed with a lot (like weren't our disposal supposed to be fantastic even the kids?) but as I posted elsewhere as the rust falls away and the seniors come back ikmsure most of them will dissipate. Here is hoping anyway
I'd actually prefer the kids to stick out the whole NAB Cup, with maybe the seniors only playing a game here or there. These kids are the clubs future, the more experience, the better!
GWS and the AFL must be thrilled with what they saw tonight -amazing effort by them.
Both games, our kids showed lots of good things, and the experienced players, esp Shaw and Ball did really well and just looked so far ahead in their footy smarts.
Not sure what people thought of Witts - he seemed to do a couple of good things - saw one pretty ferocious tackle very early, then ran back with the flight which augers well.
But very green still in many ways ( only to be expected of course)
Yagmoor seemed to play Leon's role, did a fair few good things, but you can't afford many stuff ups playing that role, so it'll be interesting to see the rate of his development here.
Fasolo did a few nice things, didn't think Sidey did a lot though got better late in game 2.
It's such a scramble these short games and with the crazy new out of bounds one, it seemed to make developing any fluency quite difficult.
Nice effort to win the two games, but perhaps swanny provided the highlight in his interview.
No idea that Caff got injured - or that we actually won the first game...very relieved for him he's such a great footballer![]()
