What to do with Chris Dawes?

He played a solid game and is pivotal to our side. Collingwood fans bronxing him should feel ashamed. How much do you want him to do? He had 19 disposals and 5 tackles. He is honestly the easiest target for some of our braindead supporters. Oh look a big guy who is not catching it and not kicking goals, he must be the problem with our team. He contests, blocks and works hard around the stoppages. He is improving as a second ruckman too.

I am truly sick and tired of all the morons thinking that he needs to kick goals to be helpful. We have won 8 in a row without him kicking goals, we dont need him to kick goals. We need him to compete as a chop out ruck, and provide a contest at half forward as well as a get out long kick option. He very rarely gets outmarked in the forward line too, not because he is great overhead, but because he plays in front and competes.

Is this a copy'n'paste job about Kozi?

Dawes is way outta touch and needs a run in the 2's. The bloke can't mark above his head, is a 50/50 for a chest mark atm and has lost his confidence to even kick straight the rare times he has a shot at goal.

Dawes will never be a Wayne Carey or Jonathan Brown, or Travis Cloke for that matter. He is what he is. He won't be the 4-5 goal player that I thought he might have been once. He has a role to play and I guess he's playing it. I'm not privy to coaches instructions. I'd be honest if I said I wasn't worried about him and Cloke as a pair.

If Dawes job is to be a distraction for Cloke, how many should Cloke kick? If he kicks 2.4 or 1 5, is that working? I'm not sure. Time will tell.

he started really well and went missing a bit throughout the game but thats to be expected. Sure, im a fan of his and i can be a little biased, but he really is getting better. Ruckwork was pretty good today.

Id really like to compare his numbers to Anvil's from last season playing the same role, i think theyd be quite similar, but without the BS from half the supporters

Surely everyone saw when he feared the contest and went for the punch instead of marking ..leading to a Melbourne goal. Can't have that.

Totally Young's fault, if he is talking and telling Dawes to mark he doesn't punch. obviously Dawes is unaware of who the player behind him is but feels his presence so goes for the punch.

As for the Kosi comparison. Dawes is an enitrely different player, and I mean entirely. Dawes is very good at ground level and quite good with his handball, Kosi is useless when the ball hits the ground. Kosi is a very good pack mark and strong overhead. Dawes is not great overhead and can't take pack marks. Dawes works hard all over the ground and has an elite tank, Kosi blows up as quickly as anyone. Honestly, do you even watch football?

Compare his output to Leigh Brown.;)

2012 with Dawes as the second ruck is way better than Brown in 2011 as the second ruck, that is clear.

It's bad enough having idiots on FB bagging Dawes but now people on here.

Get back to me when you have a suitable replacement for Dawes.

Sick of crap being wriiten on here after we win. We're making Richmond supporters look good compared to some people in this thread.

Ahhh no.

That was youngs fault who came from behind Dawes and had no awareness.

This was his best game for the yer but it still wasn't great. A step in the right direction one might say. And just quietly- thank god we have goldsack- he has become extremely important.

I agree. Leigh Brown was horrible in 2011, couldn't hide him anywhere. People need to remember Dawes is playing a role which is foreign to him and it isn't a role that will make him personally shine. But it is enabling the team to shine. 9 and 2

Where would you rank Dawes for 'hardness' in our team? For me, somewhere in the bottom third. Not good for someone of his size playing Ruck/CHF.
The fact he appeared to have so much potential really highlights the huge disappointment he is.

Completly agree here matty. Dawes is pinch-hitting at moment but has been more servicable than the anvil last year..It is so hard for a guy who jumps of both feet compete in ruck and as he never has played that role till pre season taining. We will see a different structre when we play Eagles in a fortnight. Wood will come in as second ruck. Dawes will assume the second key forward role he is accustomed to and our forward structure will take a new twist!!!!! I think as we get closer to finals dont be surprised if we take this structre and use it in finals. We have just got out of second gear and we are 9-2.

his usual supporters will come in a stick up for him
You mean like Buckley and Eade who say he needs time to develop into the Leigh Brown role?

I've seen him at the centre bounce 193cm up against 205cm, the Anvil afforded him the luxury of just concerntrating on being a key position, it's a completely different role

What is wrong with his hardness? He throws his body around well at the contest, particularly now he is in the ruck.

He may be 24 years old, but he has only played 57 games. There is improvment in him still. I just don't understand all the hatred.

Also, if his confidence is low, I am sure it is going to help when our own supporters start giving him bronx cheers. Absolute shame on you all. I'm guessing some of the people cheering may be the same ones writing on these boards about any little thing he does wrong.

Dawes was pretty good today.

Can't be easy in the ruck, then trying to integrate back into the forward line etc.

Hasn't been doing the ruck stuff for long at all, and he's doing much better than Leroy in that.

Be patient and support the guy i reckon, especially as we don't have a better overall option.

Keeffe was our only other real shot at that role, 204cm and knows how to kick a goal and can go back and shut down a quality forward, he's a real loss

You can't play Jolly and Wood in the same side in the modern game and Buckley knows it, that's why he hasn't done it

Ceglar and Gault have the height and mobility but not ready, Witts is a number 1 ruck and not ready

It's Dawes or nothing so stop bitching and get behind him

The people who bag out Chris Dawes remind me of the people who bag out Alan Toovey. In other words IDIOTS.
Dawes is not Lance Franklin and he is not Sam Reid, he is working well across half forward and learning a new role in the Ruck. He has played now played 11 games total of his career is this role and you are wondering why he is not dominating.
He does need to work on a few things like his defensive work when in the ruck, and also taking his opportunities but he does have a number of hands in goals and is solid chop out for Jols.
But you know what would Nathan Buckley and the match panel know. Lets drop him.
