Third round pick at worst then... Surely no one will bid a 1st rounder and then it is only GWS, GC and Melbourne's 2nd round picks to worry about.

The dogs could set a precedence for first club to knock back a f/s - letting the bidding club take him. They had better be sure they want him.![]()

By the writeup in the paper recently he's been training with the club for almost a year, can't see them investing that much time in someone they don't want.
There's a difference between 'don't want' and 'don't want at that price'
I only saw two games at the champs but Hunter was dreadful in them (talk of a touch of OP). On what I saw there's no way you would pay a 2nd rounder for him. His TAC record seems pretty good though.
Unfortunately it's still second round pick at worst but most likely third. GC and GWS could be feeling plucky if they're confident we'll take Hunter regardless. I mean, if they've got the balls to bid on Viney then why not try and stick it the dogs as well. In theory, we'll all be going up the ladder together.
How so? The system is designed so that the club is still in control of what they pay, but it is only slightly better than "market price".Since the AFL changed the rules for FS, most clubs end up paying over the odds
Because as I understand it GWS and GC don't intend to pick deep into the draft. So there is little benefit for either party to force us to use our 2nd round pick.
He finished the year off well in the TAC and knows how to kick a goal (something we need)...... I hope he goes third round but not so sure??
Given the quality and depth supposedly of this pool, and how early we fall in each round, plus GC, and GWS not likely to use picks past the first couple of rounds, assuming they have not traded them out anyway, we look set. I doubt even if anyone else bids on Hunter, that it will require more than our third round pick to secure him. That would bring him in at or just below predicted market price.
Sounds pretty good to me.
I can't see other clubs nominating him just to thwart/spite us like St Killjoy did. To much quality in this lot to justify them risking our opting out, and to little to be gained.

Cordy - Most likely a top 5-10 pick
Wallis - Top 10
Libba - Late first rounder/early second
Brennan (WC) - last pick
Don't really know any others since the new system
All were taken at a later pick.
I said most of the time,
Their is no way Cordy was a top ten pick, the only reason we use pick 14 on on him is the Saints called our bluff with pick 13.(if he was top 10 surly another club would have nominated him instead they left it to the Saints to call our bluff)
Wallis and Libba is completely different, of course with 2 FS in the same draft you were always going to pay unders for one of them .
The point I was making is under the old system you could use your 1 and 2 round pick in the draft and use your 3 and 4 on FS, hence why the AFL changed the rule because it was unfair to the interstate teams.
We made a killing in a compromised draft with both Libba and Wallace, certainly made up for Cordy if we did pick him too high. I reckon GWS would have loved to have got Libba into their midfield, he is the type of player they lack.
Wallis*

So the Saints would take a chance on getting a player they don't wont, on behalf of all the other clubsWrong, Cordy was a GUN junior, was rated top 5. The teams obviously talk to each other about it and they know no one else has to bid and just let St Kilda do it with the pick closest to ours.
They would have been happy taking him. They wanted another young ruckman after taking McEvoy the year before. Ended up taking Rhys Stanley at pick 47 instead. So the Saints would take a chance on getting a player they don't wont, on behalf of all the other clubs![]()
