Litherland is regarded at Hawthorn - he'll be given more time. Grimley has another season on his contract - not that that means anything - but I think he'll play on and have a different role this year. Kelly has only been around one year, and we were wrapped to pick him up last year, so can't see him going either.
What role do you see Kelly playing at AFL level?

Realy like the look of this kid:

Josh Simpson, East Fremantle, 184cm, 73kg, 9/2/94
Draft range: 15-25Simpson's combination of pace, endurance and skill make him an intriguing prospect. He doesn't get a stack of possessions at this point in his career, but is dangerous around goals and when he's got the ball he's just exciting to watch. He's very evasive, excels in traffic, breaking away from packs, and is a neat disposer of the ball by hand and foot on both sides. Finished equal first in the kicking efficiency test at the combine and equal second in the goalkicking test.

And this i reckon, Hawthorn stuff never give up on their man, not matter how many years go bay.

Hi Josh. Welcome to the Hawthorn board.

Nice write-up. :thumbsu: Good luck in the draft.

Should we upgrade Schneider that leaves us with two picks. To get more draft picks we need to axe players, who do you reckon should get the shove?

Yep I agree with the Gilham trade, although I must admit being a big fan of his
I assume we get some picks for Murphy and Young, if he goes
What's that leave us with, about 4 picks ??
I would also see if there was any interest in Ellis whilst he still has currency, but seeing as he is not out of contract I don't know how that works
Elevate Schneider so we end up with , 3 picks ??
Gee I was shit at maths !!
Anyway, whatever picks we have we use on the nastiest , quickest , hardest onballers available
As I said in an earlier post, we need to bring back the nasty...

Just on David Rodan again, did anyone see his goal against Richmond in the final round? It was one of the greatest things I have ever seen. Game was in the balance, but it looked like Port had nothing left, all of a sudden Rodan finds the ball in the back half, storms down the wing and finishes from 55.

This is what we needed in the last quarter against the Swans. A player to stand up and say **** this and take anything and everything on with the ability to do so. I'm not saying we get Rodan specifically as he is too inconsistent, but a hard bodied outside midfielder with pace who can finish is needed at the Hawks.
That pretty much sums up David Rodan. I've always been a Rodan fan for a long time. If we have a mature age rookie spot available, perhaps we should go for him.

Id possibly add litherland grimely and I know he has only had a year, but Kelly really doesnt look like much.

Agree and disagree. Litherland is definitely in trouble as he is very soft at the contest/ducks his head. Late draft pick that didn't work. However I strongly disagree with Kelly showing much. I thought that he looked most promising with his cool head and great skills. Give him a couple of years in the gym and he wil be our future Gibbo replacement.

Reading these threads I get very mixed views about players.

Agree that Kelly looks like he may well be a perfect replacement for Gibson or Lake in a few years. Looked good for a 19 year old in the BH games I saw.

We need to do what happened after we lost the 1985 Grand Final - restructure the set up slightly. Also need to decide who is or is not going to make it as a defender or ruck in the new set up as that is where the excess has built up as the club drafted to fill weaknesses.

Roughead is our best CHB but gets played forward and ruck as he is useful everywhere. We had the same issue with Langford in 1985 as a ruck/wing/forward but moved him to FB in 1986 and it tied up the back end. Lake to FB, Roughead CHB and Gibson as 3rd man up/spoiler - no gorillas are going to do too well against that. Schoenmakers to CHF which is what he was when we recruited him and he looked more comfortable when he was played there this year in small patches.

The list changes will come down to the fringe players, who at the moment are basically:

Gilham - 29 and going to be behind too many other mid sized defenders
Osborne - 30 and coming off knee reco needs to have impact when he comes back
Ellis - has another year on contract so needs to cement spot next year
Cheney - has been very good when given a chance and should retain spot
Young - a valuable outside runner but they may look at getting Hill more time there next year
Bailey - needs to get into ruck duo with Hale. Handy back-up but can't afford to be that at 26
Lowden - has completed 4 years on list and was starting to show signs at Box Hill - now or never
Grimley - has completed 3 years and finds himself in the Box Hill reserves behind Pattison
Duryea - has completed 3 years, a good honest battler but not to AFL standard

To me Gilham, Grimley and Duryea would probably have the most sleepless nights. Would like to keep Young but as a fringe player he won't get offered a big contract and may leave.

The 2nd year kids should get at least another year before being judged:
Litherland - had lots of injuries so far but has pace and talent
Hallahan - also had injuries and is starting to find his feet

Last years' draftees Hill, Kelly and Woodward appeared to be good selections and there should be no problems with those.

Would imagine that Hodge and Mitchell should be the nominated veterans as they would free up a bit of salary cap to replace this years' veterans Bateman and Osborne.

Of the rookies we should promote Schneider, finds enough of it but he needs cleaner disposal although that did improve as the year progressed. McCauley can be kept on as a rookie and either be the nominated rookie or fill in for Whitecross on the main list.
Not sure how they are going to work the rookie list for 2013. As I understand it international rookies are outside the list so Kilkenny doesn't affect anything. Frank would definitely get another year unless he didn't want it, Boseley will more than likely as well. Depends what they do with 2nd year rookies Wanganeen and Langford while I can't see the need for a 6th ruckman in Pattison being on the list. Does anyone know if they plan to put NSW scholarship player Jackson Dwyer on the rookie list as they need to decide that this year?

Can we get someone to wear the No.1 guernsey again? It was left vacant last year as Bailey made a late decision to change. Giving it to the fans was OK for one year but it looked stupid this year to continue with that.

I know most of the numbers are settled and the higher ones - besides Whitecross - are still kids but it is a significant jumper with history and it should be brought back. I would be happy for Lake to wear it.

Brad Hill could be given Bateman's No.10 in a continuation of indigenous players. I would be happy for Kelly to be given Tucky's No17.

If you are going to leave a jumper vacant then it may as well be the cursed No.36 and give Woodward a new one.

Numbers should only be rested for longer periods of time to respect someone who has passed away.

In the early days it was worn by the captains and although it doesn't have a great history at Hawthorn I would imagine that Ray Jencke, Ken Judge, Norm Goss etc would like to still see it running around.

Yep he's a bit like Dangerfield.......except Dangerfield is an inside outside midfielder who's also strong at the contest, a clearance machine with the ability to take overhead marks.....yeh nah.

Yeah I know, comment was tongue in cheek.

Fact is there isnt anyone like D'field on the market. Not even close, saying we need a Dangerfield goes without saying.

Young can kick goals and like Danger, can be a 100m player, yet so many here are ready and willing to hang him out to dry due to a poor GF.

Nice to read that the Crows are holding Sydney's feet to the fire over Tippett.

ok, what impressed you about his final series?

If you expect every player to be a gun in finals, you are destined for a life full of trades and disappointments. We had plenty of people down this whole finals series. Tell me, do you rate Michael Osbourne? How did he go in his first finals series? and that was after 6 seasons at the club. I will give you a hint, it was a lower return than Poppy.

People really need to stop jumping at shadows in trade period

What I don't understand is... how is it that people rate Roughead our "BEST CHB" when lets be honest, he has NEVER really played there ever? When he takes marks in the backline... HE IS A FREE MAN WANDERING DOWN!

Roughead is a forward!

Just wondering which NSW Scholarship players are eligible to be placed on our rookie list.

Some very astute observations, Aussie80s.

& Selkan, check out Ossies' third quarter in 2008 GF - up there with the best that day.
