Ok ive always though he was going to stay, but after hearing that offer i am fully expecting Buddy not to be at Hawthorn next year, and i cant blame him. Especially if he wins the flag with us this year, like Ablett he would have achieved everything he can at the club. You cannot hold it against the bloke for setting himself up for life, and im sure as much as he wants to stay at the hawks, he will be getting 10 million dollars in 6 years if the deal is correct.

Well that's Buddy gone then.
Get Wrighty a big shopping trolley, start with Whitfield and Treloar, throw in Buntine and a 1st rounder and we should be pretty close to the mark;)

So unless someone is leaking details to the media, where exactly do they get this info?
I maybe very naïve, but I can't believe ANY club is going to leak figures or info about what they can or can't offer. What Barrett detailed was very specific wasn't it? I just loved Roughy's reaction, he just shook his head as if to say, that is bullsh1t..

Toby Greene please. Love how hungry he is!

around 1.5 mill a season. not worth it, he isn't a g ablett but good luck to them if they are willing to pay

it is worth it if you have been given an extra million in the salary cap + a cola allowance....why have the Victorian clubs endorsed and voted for this??? why is it that our club has 62k members and is one the most asset richest clubs in the league, is restricted from spending the money it has....if you impose a salary cap it should be an even playing field, if it isnt than challenge it in a court of law and dismantle it

Only 250k a year after tax plus an extra year on what we can offer. Will need some decent AFL cash to make it worth it.

Compo will be interesting.

Seeing as band 1 (1 pick after our 1st pick) is the max and that's unders, it will interesting to see if bringing a FA pr 2 of our own will change it.

Eg we sign Dal Santo or whoever for $400k were still $1.1mil out in the equation. So should still get a band one which we send with pur first pick to GWS for Whitfield who we pay with the rest of the spare cash.

Either way we must get an answer before rd 22 so we can put the wheels in motion.

No Sydney NRL clubs gets a COLA. It's nothing but a BS tool of Demetriou's obsession with teams in League heartlands.

You build a team around Buddy Franklin, surely the club can offer him 5 years...

No chance of matching the 1.5 from GWS but I'm sure Jason Dunstall was offered equally ridiculous money from the bears back in the day.

I can't say I'm confident bud will stay, I obviously hope he does. I'd like to see his status at the club reach the level of a Jason Dunstall/Leigh Matthews. I'm unsure what his standing would be if he left the club for money.

Interesting if true. There's a clear choice here: stay at a footy club where you'll have a chance to achieve greatness and take a side to great things too. Or take the money and ply your trade like a big fish in a small pond. Gather stats, look sparkling etc Which is all fine in theory, but, like one G Ablett, will you look back in some years time and wonder what you might have achieved if you stayed? Because the choice isn't just about money here: it's also about achieving all you can as a player. And that won't happen at the 'display home club'.

How much would he be getting from his clothing label (which might i add has just started selling in the UK) plus MackBoots, Adidas contract, buddy ball etc?

Yes, there's that small matter.

Gazza could have had another premiership and possibly another Brownlow if he'd stayed at the Cats. Money can't but those things. Being loved by the Suns bandwagoners wouldn't compare to the passion of Victorian fans. I don't understand chasing a slightly bigger pot of money for little chance of success. I might be odd - but it just doesn't seem worth it.

Yep. Guys like Skilton would swap Brownlows for the opportunity to have played in successful sides. Flags, finals, all the good stuff.

This is what makes me laugh when people say Ablett achieved all he could at the cats. What a load of crap, he missed out on being part of premiership winning teams after he left. You can throw in words like 'workplace' and 'business' all you like, but footballers play for the ultimate prize. Just ask any Hawk from the early eighties if they thought one flag was enough...

What goes around comes around. I hope for the sake of GWS that they can taste some success in the next few years...because once the draft concessions end and contracts start finishing their terms their players will be ripe for the picking. I honestly can't blame Franklin if he goes for the money, but I believe he'll be consigning himself to be remembered as a good player; if he stays he could be remembered as a legend.

Whatever happened to the rule about not being able to make offers to players until they are out oif contract?

cough... Gunston, Hale, Gibson... cough
