There is literally hundreds of trade combinations that could convince you to break ties with Myers for 2014. Myers is, at best, the eighth or ninth best midfielder at Essendon; at that level there is no shortage of players who are either more productive, less costly, or have greater potential. All three of those aspects would provide an incentive to trade someone like Myers.

If the club genuinely believes that someone like Myers is off-limits then they are definitely not doing #whateverittakes.

Of course theres hundeds of combinations but really how many are actually plausible to happen? to be presented to us that are worthwhile? not many i'm sure.

Anyways really don't want to give up myers if we can just getting better and better like jobe.

No. But I would say that his likely rate of improvement will not be as high as those gunning for his position in the best 22. He is at present our eighth or ninth best midfielder and the one who is most likely to lose his spot if our players aged around 20 improve significantly. I also don't see him going past the likes of Melksham or Heppell, or catching up to our more mature midfielders such as Watson, Goddard or Stanton any time soon.

Even if he improves he is not going to get the opportunities in our midfield until he is probably 27 or thereabouts. My position would be that it may be possible to get someone who could be as productive as Myers in 2014, at a lower cost, who in three or four years will be absolutely primed to take over from Watson / Goddard / Stanton.

How do you plan on getting pick 22 then?

If we're to lose Crameri, we need to replace him with another best 22 player, not lose 2 for 1. That's how you build depth. If we could get 22 + Higgins, then you'd have to think about trading 22 + another player for a very good player, but you don't build depth by trading integral parts of the best 22 for just one player.

We are not trading out Crameri - he wants to leave - I would trade out 10 players from the best 22 if I could get an upgrade. ( which of course is next to impossible ). But the principle remains the same.

But I wouldn't accept a top 10 pick, unless it was something ridiculous. I have made it very clear ( which people have forgotten ) that I only trade out a best 22 player for an upgraded player, not for a draft pick.

Or people understand that you can on-trade draft picks, and many clubs do want them.

For example, you keep banging on about wasting Myers and 22 on Dal Santo. How could you possibly justify turning down a top ten pick for Myers when you could waste that pick on Dal Santo instead, and keep 22?

Not much rate of improvement required. He only needs to find a few possessions here (I am sure that we'll look after him given that we'll want to get the ball in his hands), some harder running there, you can even add some work developing subtleties in his inside game, and the only reason he won't be in the top 5 mids at the club is because the top 5 are absolute guns.

I don't mind this as a rule given where our side is at (unless best 22 player walks and/or pick looks more appropriate in the circumstances). Still a difficult thing to determine what an upgrade is.

Because I know how good a Montagna,Shaw or Dal Santo are as AFL players, and they can play now. Whereas there are no guarantees with the top 10 pick.

To be fair, Hird did that in 2011 too.

And if he overtakes three of Watson, Stanton, Goddard, Heppell, Zaharakis and NDS, we'll win the flag, pure and simple.

He was played off flank on occasions in AFL during season to keep in touch with pace of game/standard etc but played onball at VFL level to begin developing endurance whilst monitoring his injuries closely. In 2012 he progressed somewhat and then managed a far better pre season in 2013 allowing him to emerge into midfield rotations. We need to be mindful that player injuries also determine what role a player can perform without risk etc

Notice that BTG had NDS in the list of Essendon midfielders !

Big bodies midfielders that can win many clearances dont grow on trees and are so, so important in modern football.

Watson, Pendlebury, JPK, ROK types are hard to come by

Yeah, that's not a criticism of Hird, just a fact of life. From memory a KPD got injured early which necessitated Myers going into defence.

I think he is worth pursisting with. He could become one of our most important players. Currently, we wouldn't get what he is worth in the market so keep with him.
