Opinion Could Selwood perform better than Ablett in 2014?

What is the word 'surpass' supposed to indicate in this situation? Are we talking about the standing of each particular player in the game or their level of on-field output?

If the standing of Ablett/Selwood respectively within our game is the case, then I have to agree with several others and suggest the OP lay off the 3am posts. :p

If we're talking about on-field output then I don't necessarily agree either, although the OP makes a much more salient point in this regard. If Selwood does happen to surpass Ablett in terms of this next year (or in the near future), it will result from Ablett being pushed up forward more frequently and working less as an accumulator.

That one. I'm asking if 2014 is the year Selwood will perform better than Ablett. Have a better on-field output, and, from that point onwards, become a better player. For the record, I don't think it will happen - at least not in 2014. Everything about Ablett says he can play until he's 35, and keep up some very solid form right up until then - ala Brent Harvey.

Ablett's overall contribution to the game will be matched by very few.

Great players always receive more attention in big games.

Mitchell has played three grand finals and been poor to average by his usual standard in all. Hodge had little impact in '12 or '13.

Ablett has played three and only received Norm Smith votes in a loss.

Watch the last quarter of '09 when you get a chance and watch him running when just about everyone else had nothing in their legs. If he didn't play, Geelong wouldn't have won imo.

Really don't think Selwood will be the better performer in 2014 unfortunately. Ablett is in a class of his own right now, and for Selwood to draw any comparisons Ablett would have to either drop off considerably or sustain an injury. Even though he may not operate as a full-time midfielder next year, I still think he should produce more than enough impact across the board to have Selwood well and truly covered.

If Ablett were to be surpassed by Selwood in terms of on-field output, I'd say it will most likely occur ~3 years down the track when he is beginning to age, being played primarily as a forward rather than an accumulator, and there is less work cut out for him as a result of GC beginning to improve and their mids (Prestia, O'Meara, Martin, etc.) picking up the slack.

No he won't and it is a pity that the question is being asked. They are both valuable and fantastic players. No-one will have the silky skills of Ablett jnr, no-one will have to live with the expectation that he has, no-one will have to put up with the bull*** that he has had to.

Ablett was discussing spending more time forward next year. Father time may be catching up, Selwood may go past him in Brownlow votes next year. He's still a great player, but it is a midfielders medal. Sent from my phone while my kids annoyed the crap out of me.

We all see it differently. If Hawkins kicks straight has the Norm by a country mile , by id have given it Jimmy or SJ. I thought SJ was better in 2011 with all he over came than in 2007

It's all about those 10 minutes before half time. If Jimmy and Joel don't stand up then there's a good chance we go into the halftime break 5 goals down.

No doubt if Tommy puts a couple of those through and ends the day with 5 or 6 it was his.

Anyone seen what Ablett is doing for holidays while Selwood is water skiing in the usa?

Boxing his guts out.

Selwood isn't a chipscab possession addict, so the media and general worshipers in footy will always have Ablett ahead.

Ablett's 500 possessions in the first half of the 2010 prelim where Collingwood absolutely smashed us is the epitome of what I think of Ablett's game. And Ablett fans saying "but, but...he kept us in the game..." is why I don't argue with them.

Selwood and Bartel turned the game for us in the second quarter of the 2011 GF. Selwood could have easily won the Norm Smith that year and no-one would have blinked. Selwood has a bigger impact on games. (Please don't mention Ablett's possession tally when we have been thumped because that only strengthens the case) Ablett is more media friendly and is more skilled.

Ablett left us 3 years ago. Get over it. He's the best player in the comp by far.

He also finished his season 3 weeks earlier than Joel, so that is not entirely fair.

Ablett should be fresher than Selwood the matches he played in were at a pretty gentle intensity level this year. And he has zero defensive responsibility.

Selwood cops twice as much flak off the ball as the next most targetted player so he definitely needs a break. Also played for 3 weeks more than Ablett and you're kidding yourself if you don't think that Selwood is training for 2+ hours a day even on holidays, because that's just the kind of guy that he is.

Love Joel but Gazza is on a whole different plane from anyone else in the comp.
