FWIW Steve Smith was captain of the NSW one day side. To his credit he has always been a good fielder. However as a batsman I expect him to get found out again in the South African tour.

Having said that Phil Hughes is captaining the Strikers. He has way too much talent to not eventually get himself back into the Australian side and cement his spot.

hughes needs to finish the year off playing Shield cricket, then most of next year playing shield cricket aswell. Then when Rogers has finihsed, he takes over for Rogers. They need to stop moving him up and down the order and make him earn his spot.

I can see Siddle not playing in two years. We have Cummins, Pattinson, Starc and another kid ready to go, so the depth is there. Our batting stocks is still a worry depth wise. Wade or Payne, maybe Bailey if he can lift to the standard required. I reckon that's where the next captain comes from.

totally agree. But i dont want Hughes batting all around the place, he is an opener. Doolan for Bailey, Watto to 6, Bailey at 3.

I consider that our batsmen where found out by England. Our tail was good enough to hang around and one batsmen would get a hunderd. But the lower order never really set up a victory without needing the tail.

If the English tail had hung around and the English batsmen had had the confidence (or lack of undeserved arrogence) to trust their tail then maybe they would have had more hunderds themselves.

Bell should have been moved to 3 much earlier.

Starc is overrated, Cummins and Pattinson are guns though. Plus you need the one steady workhorse bowler, which is where Siddle might hold his spot, only Jackson Bird looks likely to take that from him.

Agreed (just realised that I didn't type what I meant to above ). It's a bit of both with the lower order, the 6th wicket partnerships were huge, and aside from Brisbane, it was always Haddin and one of the batsman who did the first innings grunt work to get the total up before the tail batted on.

I'd say going to SA, only Clarke, Haddin, and now Rogers and Smith (two real good first innings centuries has me convinced) are solid, Warner and Watson remain iffy, and Bailey has to go.

The Poms are burning Root in a very similar way to how we've burnt Hughes.

He doesn't get caught at 2nd slip much anymore, now his problem is playing off-spinners.

Credit where it's due with him, he has a shitload of ability and he works hard to eradicate his flaws (until a new one gets found ).

He just needs to make piles and piles of runs at shield level. Which he is doing, but want to see him do it for longer. The guy is class, he just really needs to do the hard slog and earn a recall like back in the day.
He is very much a confidence player and in England he was not our worse but he got thrown around, batted in just about every position. Let him open, and keep him there.

He just needs to make piles and piles of runs at shield level. Which he is doing, but want to see him do it for longer. The guy is class, he just really needs to do the hard slog and earn a recall like back in the day.

Agree with that, he's generally been of recent times the first one recalled to fill a gap, and the first one dropped when the team struggles, he needs some continuity somewhere.

He has a weird technique that had some flaws, but he's done well to get rid of them. After the Poms starting targetting his body, he worked on his leg side game, then after Martin had him nicking to slips he adjusted as well.

His work ethic appears to be really good, when he gets told to fix something, he seems to do it each time. Plus he's still only 24/25, he'll come good, selectors need to be a bit careful with picking him though.

Only once, in Hobart against the Kiwis he made a ton chasing about 230 in a match we lost by about 15 runs.

Yep Smith would be a good 6 as well. Batting cupboard as you said is pretty bare hence he or Watson could be 5/6. Watson's ability with the ball allows the bowlers some respite. I doubt we'd have been able to keep Harris going and Johnson fresh without Watson bowling.

Exactly, Rogers looks settled. Even if Hughes doesn't make runs, there's young players like Maddinson about who might step up by then.

It's a high 30s average, but it came a long way last year, especially when he made a big hundred against South Africa in a tour match. But yeah, he just seems to be rated very highly, doesn't have the same knocks on him that Bailey had (which were eventually ignored for this series).

Pretty much this, if he can't bowl, he shouldn't play. If Mitch Marsh or Faulkner could take their batting to the required level he'd be out of there pretty damn quick.

Don't discount Bailey just yet. On the exposed form ( 5 test matches), if he gets past a scratchy start ( 4 innings under 10 runs) he's gone on to have 4 innings at an average 43 each).

Too early discard him just yet.

Funny I'd take Marsh out of those 4, only because Marsh has had a few injuries which potentially have derailed his career ( I say potentially as he could still be spud like) whereas Hughes has had more tryouts than Kim Duthie in the Saint's rooms after the game as has Khawaja while North would fail the St Kilda age barrier.

I've been watching some of the shits and giggles BBL and we could do worse than picking ne of the younger players from there.

Marsh = Limited Overs games only.
North is finished.
Khawaja was treated harshly imo but he needs to find a way to convert a start into a decent score when he gets his next chance.
