Why then why I catch a plane to the Middle East do Arabic women get on board in jeans/western dress and then all get off in the hijab?
Because they're culturally adaptive?

Oh no, that's right... it's because the Arab world is misogynist

I am sure those pesky women driving in Saudi are just an AQ front.

Is this is all women? Don't think so, really annoys me when people give examples that do not reflect the majority.

But it's no surprise that she said nothing. I felt that much of that "calling out sexism/blue tie" stuff was politically motivated, cooked up by the likes of flogs like McTernan. Good luck to her in that regard, politics is politics, kill or be killed, use whatever you can get your hands on to make your point. But it will probably break the hearts of the mummy bloggers and the twitterati that she wasn't really totally into all that sisterhood solidarity, it was primarily a means to an end, but thanks for your support anyway.

There was clearly a strategy to play the gender card against Abbott. It backfired spectacularly. Abbott surrounded himself with his daughters at every opportunity. His wife felt compelled to speak publically on his behalf. The underhand campaign led by Gillard and Labor's handbag hit squad also prompted the Libs to play hardball on Gillard's involvement in the AWU affair.

Depends on which country in the ME you fly into. Saudi for example, absolutely. All women do regardless of origin. UAE no.

She is only being held to her own standards.

Indeed. And her standards are definitely not your standards or the standards of those who have come on here like milling sheep after Bolta barked at them. Most people go to foreign countries wanting, in part, to better understand better how they work (the customs and beliefs of a different people). Otherwise why leave home? Until one understands the customs and beliefs of a different people, proselytising among those people the customs and beliefs one holds dear is a waste of time for two reasons. First, until you have an understanding of the customs and beliefs of the other people how can you be sure your superficial criticisms are valid. To speak out in those circumstances would be a form of cultural colonialism - "I know better". Secondly, without an understanding of the customs and beliefs it is very difficult to persuade, by reference to important cultural icons or myths, why in accordance with the customs and beliefs in Dubai say, greater respect for women is important.

So when Julia G answered that she did not feel qualified to respond on women's rights in Dubai she was adhering to a standard she no doubt believes very strongly in. That is, not talking through the top of her head about things she does not satisfactorily understand. It is a pity that posters like you and your misogynist mates, happy to call hypocrite at the drop of a hat, do not adopt more of Julia's standards as your own. I suspect that a genuine passion for equal rights for women that you show mock concern for would be another one.

She could have said any number of things, she said nothing. She really had nothing to offer on the subject, given her history on the issue? Not even a reflection of the positives steps of increasing female representation in Middle Eastern politics?

Even if that were true, I'd be in the same company as some of those in the former Prime Minister's office, including her right hand man.

But answering the way she did she has said a lot more than you do in your post. Think about it.

Abbott could talk about "Goodies" and "Baddies" in Syria and meds would think it was more evidence of his most excellent skills in foreign affairs

He already did? Oh. I guess only one of us is guilty of hyperbole then.

So who are the "Goodies" and "Baddies" in Syria? Abbott is smart enough to leave this conflict alone

Ashby scandal is more important than this

First time in Australian policital history , a judge has ruled libs/lnp and other coalition members were invovled in a political plot against former libs/lnp member and speaker of the house of reps, peter slipper in attmpet for political advantage to try to force an undemocratic early election

When Julia Gillard’s former boyfriend and client Bruce Wilson discovered the contents of several hundred documents relating to him and seized under search warrant from law firm Slater & Gordon by Victoria Police’s Fraud Squad eight months ago, he went on the front foot…

The documents have not yet been seen by Senior Sergeant Ross Mitchell and his team of detectives. This is because the evidence has been sealed and held in custody by Victoria’s courts since being taken away from Slater & Gordon in boxes by the police…

Now here is the rub: police are expected to postpone laying charges until Wilson’s bid to keep the documents secret has been exhausted. And as the legal battle has been escalated to Victoria’s Supreme Court, it will not be resolved until June at the earliest.

What this means for the Labor Party, Gillard (who has always asserted she did not know the slush fund would be used in any wrongdoing), Bill Shorten and other potential witnesses is nothing stands in the way of the new royal commission investigating the AWU slush-fund scandal. There are no sub judice issues because nobody has been charged over the slush fund.

Former High Court judge Dyson Heydon can fulfil Tony Abbott’s pledge to run a judicial inquiry into a scandal journalists, and large media organisations, have been threatened and bullied for reporting. Wilson’s strategy has given the commission an opening to use its powers and rules of evidence. Witnesses can be compelled to give evidence under oath.

Wowee. If true, Dry Rot will be doing handsprings.

Good on Abbott getting on the front foot announcing a royal commission into union corruption, shine a light on the cockroaches. Even better if Gillard ends up doing time.

Sure will. :D

Good ol' Bruce. I wondered why the Vic cops didn't mind the delay.

There'll be more than one ex union leader and more than one ex S&G partner who will sleep a little uneasy now.

Before you get too excited, there are two issues here. Firstly, does the RC have the power to obtain docs covered by legal professional privilege? If not, then no new evidence would be forthcoming from S&G. I don't think it does have that power but I stand to be corrected. Secondly, it's 20 years ago. Remember the AWB inquiry and the stock standard response (from Downer?) of 'I do not recall'? Expect plenty of that.

Yep, it was Downer who said over and over "I do not recall" at the hearing for the Iraq AWB scandal. Embarassing.

Police seize hundreds of AWU ‘slush fund’ documents

BRAD NORINGTON,
FEBRUARY 13, 2014 12:00AM
VICTORIAN police have seized hundreds of union documents locked in a Perth storage unit that could provide important evidence for their investigation into the involvement of Julia Gillard’s former boyfriend in an alleged fraud.

The Australian Workers Union confirmed yesterday that Victorian police had executed search warrants for archives kept in the storage unit, and removed 12 boxes that could assist an investigation into former union official Bruce Wilson and the AWU Workplace Reform Association “slush fund”.

The revelation that potentially key evidence is in police hands comes in the same week that Tony Abbott announced the terms of reference for a wide-ranging royal commission into union corruption, including financial deals and bribes going back decades. It confirms how seriously Victorian police — who also travelled to Perth to interview former union boss Tim Daly about the contents of the boxes — are treating the Wilson case. The Wilson investigation is likely to continue as a parallel police operation separate from the royal commission.

Its called respect! Not sure you understand that you don't sh*t in places where you are a guest.
Example: I am a stickler for cleanliness, how would you like it if I was invited to your place and said 'what a pig sty you live in".

Nah that's not respect. Respect would be not labelling someone a mysgonist when they aren't.

Especially when she stated she would “call out misogyny and sexism wherever I see it”.

It's nothing really. It was a politically savvy move at the time.

Went and looked up the meaning of respect again and couldn't fit it in with what you wrote. Sorry.

Actually you don't know whether Tone is a misogynist or not, neither do I. However, he is on record as having made several statements that certainly show misogynistic attitudes.( these are on public records and have been quoted on BF several times). If you have read these comments and think they are ok, you might want to reach for a dictionary and educate yourself.
Alternatively, you can continue with your petty attacks on Gillard, but perhaps on a thread that is more relevant to the gender issue?
