There was clearly a strategy to play the gender card against Abbott. It backfired spectacularly. Abbott surrounded himself with his daughters at every opportunity. His wife felt compelled to speak publically on his behalf. The underhand campaign led by Gillard and Labor's handbag hit squad also prompted the Libs to play hardball on Gillard's involvement in the AWU affair.

First, until you have an understanding of the customs and beliefs of the other people how can you be sure your superficial criticisms are valid. To speak out in those circumstances would be a form of cultural colonialism - "I know better". Secondly, without an understanding of the customs and beliefs it is very difficult to persuade, by reference to important cultural icons or myths, why in accordance with the customs and beliefs in Dubai say, greater respect for women is important.

So when Julia G answered that she did not feel qualified to respond on women's rights in Dubai she was adhering to a standard she no doubt believes very strongly in. That is, not talking through the top of her head about things she does not satisfactorily understand. It is a pity that posters like you and your misogynist mates, happy to call hypocrite at the drop of a hat, do not adopt more of Julia's standards as your own. I suspect that a genuine passion for equal rights for women that you show mock concern for would be another one.

Before you get too excited, there are two issues here. Firstly, does the RC have the power to obtain docs covered by legal professional privilege? If not, then no new evidence would be forthcoming from S&G. I don't think it does have that power but I stand to be corrected. Secondly, it's 20 years ago. Remember the AWB inquiry and the stock standard response (from Downer?) of 'I do not recall'? Expect plenty of that.

VICTORIAN police have seized hundreds of union documents locked in a Perth storage unit that could provide important evidence for their investigation into the involvement of Julia Gillard’s former boyfriend in an alleged fraud.

The Australian Workers Union confirmed yesterday that Victorian police had executed search warrants for archives kept in the storage unit, and removed 12 boxes that could assist an investigation into former union official Bruce Wilson and the AWU Workplace Reform Association “slush fund”.

The revelation that potentially key evidence is in police hands comes in the same week that Tony Abbott announced the terms of reference for a wide-ranging royal commission into union corruption, including financial deals and bribes going back decades. It confirms how seriously Victorian police — who also travelled to Perth to interview former union boss Tim Daly about the contents of the boxes — are treating the Wilson case. The Wilson investigation is likely to continue as a parallel police operation separate from the royal commission.

Actually you don't know whether Tone is a misogynist or not, neither do I. However, he is on record as having made several statements that certainly show misogynistic attitudes.( these are on public records and have been quoted on BF several times). If you have read these comments and think they are ok, you might want to reach for a dictionary and educate yourself.
Alternatively, you can continue with your petty attacks on Gillard, but perhaps on a thread that is more relevant to the gender issue?
