Wasted cash right there !!!!

Will never be an AFL forward of any note.

"Wasted cash" is a bit strong. A player sponsor is giving money to be part of the club and show their support for a player, which I'm sure pfk's mum is happy with. It's not like you get more return on investment in future years if they turn out to be a gun.

As we say in my family - "Your face is wasted cash."

People said Joel Patfull would be forced out of the side eventually by our up and coming youngsters. Never write a player off, egg on your face is very difficult to get off.

If anything, you end up losing money if they become a gun. I speak from being $230 poorer this year than last year, but totally worth it!

Well Leppa said post-game that our 'best squad' will play the next 2 games. Given it'll still be an extended squad it probably won't clear up what he thinks the best 22 is yet, but it might give a better guide?

It wasn't a lot fun to watch, but that was always on the cards. Liked Robbo's competitiveness though. 11 of his 14 possessions were contested.

Not too sure I buy into the " it was always going to be like that, new coach, new players, new game plan "

For the life of me I couldn't see a game plan. Skills were poor, execution was poor...just reckon blooding so many young blokes against that team wasn't wise. It can leave scars and provide doubt.

Don't think the marketing and sales departments would have been thrilled either..:)

I dont know how Leppa is meant to see our game plan in action with players that arent going to play a single game this year.

Also i really hope handballing like crazy to feet then kicking it along the floor into the forward line isnt in the new plan.

Do people who think the marketing dept. care about this game honestly think that Queenslanders who aren't football tragic's are watching a preseason game that is foxtel only?

I seriously think you overrate the interest the broader public has in AFL up here.

Oh cool looks like the people who only post when things aren't good are all here.

I'll happily post when things are great too. Last night was just miserable to watch. I hope Leppa was just giving the youngens a valuable lesson.

And yes. I apologise for the waste if cash comment. Uncalled for. It is important to support the club and no better way than to sponsor players. My bad.

Cutler was OK, looked a bit nervous but manages to get it enough and made a few decent decisions. Robbo cracked in but needs to learn to pick his spots (i.e. when to barrel through full chested and when to stay back).

Harwood showed poise. Bourke was better than I thought. O'Brien can hold his head up. Lester got some touches but made some basic errors with the ball going through his hands a few times, ran over the ball too. If he can eradicate those few mistakes he'll be even better.

Right post match analysis done. Erasing all unpleasant memories and moving on.

My 7 year old's more succinct review; "We sucked".[/quote]

Hope im not intruding.

On Saturday just gone, 8 or 9 Lions came to Ipswich Cats sign on day at Ipswich. Great bunch of young blokes, weren't 'princesses' , interacted with the kids really well (they aren't that much older than kids..) signed everything, and gave the kids some great memories.

Im not big on who is who, but I have their club numbers if you are interested; 35, 22, 32, 23, 46, 37, 8. 45. All except 45 played last night that we saw.

Will offer condolences on last nights loss,....we were hoping those blokes would do well.

There's a bit of Hemmingway in the boy...

Was this a few random people on this forum or in the media? I don't recall ever seeing anyone say this about him.

That's what I'd take out of last night.
Pre-season games have value, even if the win itself is not of particular importance. But sending young kids out to be witches' hats wastes a precious practice game. I don't particularly understand why the two coaches pitted such unbalanced teams against each other, I'm sure no-one who saw that game took anything useful out of it.
I am sure no one will even remember this game in a few weeks.
It is about the big picture.

On a positive note, I thought all of the draftees showed a bit, and I agree that Bourke has something to work with if he can bulk-up.

Cutler caught me eye a few times (during one of those brief periods when I took my hands away from my face), in a perfect world he might even be an upgrade on Docherty off the HBF.

McStay did a couple of nice things, Robertson looks like he will start off as a blue-collar worker around the packs, Aish showed some glimpses as well so you'd think they will all look better with a lot more talent/bigger bodies around them.

It was still a bit depressing, but I guess "in Leppa we trust!".

There is a replay on at 10-30 this morning, I'm going to watch it because I hate myself.

Even though I know the result and I know it's not going to be pretty I still want to see the carnage for myself. I seriously couldn't care less about last night's result, I'm trusting Leppa and the coaching staff have a plan and surely they would have known what awaited them last night, perhaps not the magnitude of the loss, but a heavy defeat all the same. Glad to hear the positive feedback re Robbo, ever since we drafted him I've had a feeling that he will be special.

154 to 23?

Well I want to know what the hell the Lions have been working on in the preseason. I expected us to be well beaten given the team we trotted out but that was just hopeless. I expected to see some indications of where we are going and who is improving but there was simply nothing to take out of that game we were so pathetic.
I thought I would see this vaunted structure that we have been told the players have been working on (not fully implemented perhaps but some indication of what we are trying to do) but they were aimless out there. Hawthorn always had more men around the ball and then half a dozen blokes standing around on their own ready to receive the ball. Our structure seemed to be not to mind space and not go for the ball and when we got the ball to make sure we ran with a Hawthorn player.
Voss spent the last 3 years building our skills and last night was as bad as I have ever seen. You would have to assume that zero skill work has been done in the offseason to see such a regression. Guys who last year showed some real skills like Mayes were nowhere. Aish comes in with a reputation of having high quality skills but even in space he is missing targets and not really showing much in the way of class. Then there was our hands which were abysmal both above the head and below the knees. We dropped marks all over the ground and fumbled constantly.
We also looked slow and our run was well behind Hawthorn.
So what did we work on? Whatever it was it was certainly not evident last night.
I will go out on a limb here and say that none of our KPFs for this year played last night. Lisle tried a bit early but could not take a mark, made mistakes and generally just did not look like a threat. There seems a bit of love for Freeman within the Lions and they think he could be an answer but he is a year or two away. Close just does not seem to have any idea about when and where to lead and does not get separation. I think he ends up down back. Paparone has put on no weight but he did flash a few things but he is a third tall / flanker and not a KP.
On the smalls forwards Green was close to our best on the night. Made a few good tackles which others seemed incapable of, bustled around got a bit of it and was sometimes clean. I was disappointed in Zorko he was nowhere near as involved as I was expecting. Bewick was terrible. Couldn't do anything right all night and his spot in the 22 should be majorly in doubt.
Through the middle we seem to have fallen back into playing from behind at clearances. We are never going to win the ball doing that and were smashed all night. Even when we got the ball no-one was moving to give a release to. Hayes started pretty well I thought and got a few clearances and in the first half was probably as good as anyone in that role. Robinson worked hard and created a contest most of the night and got his hands on it a bit but struggled to get away clean ball. Crisp didn't do much. Lester got a bit of it clearance wise in the second half and got a few decent disposals but did not really impose himself on the game. I was not sure where Raines was playing. Aish was pretty solidly outside all night and was okay without really showing much. O'Brien got in and mixed it up and whilst he was not overly impressive I would have had in my top few mids all up (not saying a lot). West was well beaten by all the Hawks rucks and showed nothing up forward. Not sure playing him adds anything to our side apart from a live body in the ruck. Michael was terrible in the ruck and got nowhere near it. He did work better around the ground than West did. He should not be played as a ruck at this stage.
Down back Maguire made as many howlers as anyone else. Similarly with Clarke who looked a bit lost out there at times and was caught out of position a bit. He showed some good pace but his heart did not look in it. His kicking was okay. Polkinghorne was poor and should not be considered as a starting 22 option. Golby was really not much better and has not seemed to develop at all over the last few years. His kicking is still not I had hoped it would be and he has no right foot. Harwood made a few mistakes but I thought he was our best defender out there. He was a presence at the back and was attacking the play. His hands were better than most and his kicking was okay. Wearden I say a bit and he was generally okay I thought. Bourke got a few tough jobs with the ball coming in very easily and had some good moments although generally well beaten. I thought he showed enough glimpses for it to be considered an encouraging outing for him. McStay was all over the park chasing his man and after the first few times when he made some glaring mistakes I thought he settled in and worked hard. He did not show a heap but at least he wasn't making the same errors he was making early. Cutler needs to get a lot fitter and up his running but was one of the most composed at the back and showed a bit I thought.

If he was a race horse , he'd be at the glue factory by now.
I don't see him making it. I'll happily be proven wrong though.

Purchasing things that you don't even know you're buying can be very difficult to sustain.
