I don't deal in insinuation. I was merely asking a question and I was hoping wise people like yourself, armed with nothing more than goal averages, could set my inquisitive mind to rest.
It's actually a really difficult question to answer. The most talented small forwards are more often than not pushed up into the midfield, Ablett is clearly the most talented player of his generation, but only really developed that talent in the midfield. So the best answer to that question, in my opinion, is that the best small forward is probably a midfielder.

Sounds more like he is underrated is you're saying he is overrated, given his performances which are outstanding both this year and over his career.

77% efficiency with such a high contested ball ratio is particularly amazing, especially since Rioli plays in the forward third of the ground. I don't think there are many football fans who appreciate this stat combination, too fixated on kicks, marks and handballs.
With so little disposals the efficiency is likely to be higher. I.E. If he got more possessions, efficiency would probably go down.
Basically he's averaging just over 11 effective disposals a game, pretty shit for a midfielder really.

100% disagree. Efficiency in the forward line is infinitely harder. Defenders have the whole ground in front of them to work with, over 100m of width and opposition forwards scrambling back into defensive positions.

Forwards have to deliver the ball into a narrowing playing field usually packed with 75% of the entire opposition. They work in much less space.

No way should disposal efficiency be higher in the forward line. Players like Zac Dawson do not have 90% disposal efficiencies because they are awesome

Nah bros, see, Cyril should go middle and flick 19 hand passes around to get a Rise! Instead of making space, covering for teammates or getting ready actually chase for the sake of your team..MEN who love their statistics is so Gay! Grow up will ya's. Oh btw, Motlop isn't that good and I love how Hawks beat them in the PF so that Mottop and The little one (one who looks like Stokes midget) stopped waving their fingers around after every goal..That put them in their place.lol.

Just thought I'd weigh in with some potentially interesting points.
Most of us think Stevie J is a gun, I know I'm a massive fan.

Just thought it would be worth comparing where SJ was at, at the stage Cyril is now - that being 122 game.
Both are the same type of impact flamboyant type player.

Stevie J was about 26 when he'd played 122 games, 2 years older than Cyril.
He'd been in 1 flag and had 2 AA representations
Cyril has 2 flags and 1 AA representation.

Stats.

SJ Averages Kicks 11.63; HBs 4.7; Disposals 16.3; Marks 5.3; Tackles 2.1; Goals 2
CR Averages Kicks 9.25; HBs 6.3; Disposals 15.5; Marks 3.8; Tackles 4.5; Goals 1.3

SJ had had just under 1 more possy per game. Cyril's defensive side of his game far outweighs SJ.

SJ has gone on to spend more and more time in the guts with a big lift in output, will Cyril - maybe, maybe not.

He's not as under achieving or overrated as you may think

People are either old fools, or 'sons' with you.

You seem to flip flop your age/maturity to suit the argument at the time.

VJ is right though. Nice AV. ;)

I reserve the right to equivocation where applicable ;)

Stevie also had a Norm Smith

I do wonder if the difference in the tackle count reflects the modern game and higher accountability for forwards? Then again, it's more than possible that SJ just didn't give a shit. Interesting stats anyway Les. Another major distinction is that Cyril has his Rioli emblazoned all over his back. Stevie J keeps his Johnson in his pants.

Cyril Rioli is the Johnny Depp of the AFL. Looks good, lots of buzz around him, but only has 1 good performance in between lots of crap.

By the looks of things you've obviously tried to put a lot of thought into your post. It must therefore be so disappointing for you that your post has fallen flat. Nevertheless keep plugging away we all look forward to next next instalment of tedious witlessness.

Shit, I thought his NS was 09, my bad.
Cyril's blinding speed makes him a brilliant forward tackler.
SJ is less likely to worry about the defensive side of his game, and yes it's a good thing he doesn't display his name heritage??? as you put it.

usually his threads are about the overrated Bartel

Nah, Bartel isn't overrated.

The guy is a jet who has had a great career.

One of the few genuinely untrollable footballers in my opinion.

Most sensible post in this thread. The difference between Rioli and Johnson at the same point in their careers is the way they are treated by fans and the media. Stevie J was the mercurial genius, as foolish as he was brilliant, listen to some Hawthorn supporters and commentators you'd be forgiven for believing Cyril Rioli was the second coming.

Maybe so but it is not Cyrils fault that some commentators and some supporters think this.

It is the same thing about Selwood ducking his head for free kicks. Everyone knows he does it except Geelong supporters, because supporters can be like that.

He's not the 2nd coming. He's just a very talented individual, who on his day is one of the game's biggest match winners.
That's why I did the SJ comparison, they're both enigmas to a certain extent, brillinat but can disappear. I'm referring to early SJ there.

I'm hoping for more consistency of out CR during 2014.
Whether he'll match SJ's output in the latter year of his career is debatable. Cyril has had hammy issues when he's had extended period in the mids, one reason he doesn't get in there as much.
