Leadership group telling the coach how to coach, hmmm tail wagging the dog?

If the leadership group has this kind of power the current list/coaching group needs some intervention and certain people need moving on.

I hope the leadership group does talk to Buckley about it. And i hope they ask for more of it. I love coaches to have an element of crazy in them and Bucks has been way too measured so far.

I know it's 2014 and we should be past it by now but we aren't, players can't provide the motivation themselves all the time. I loved it

Not like a big man was picking on little boy or that afl doesnt involve much more physicality on the ground so as long as it was calculated then in isolation no issue. Witts response in rest of game suggests this the case.

Would only be an issue if it was Buckley losing his temper or junior coaches, parents think its the norm and use inappropriately.

What was Bucks supposed to do ........ sit down with Witts over a nice hot cup of tea on the interchange bench and have an open, sharing, non-judgemental performance review? This is football people, not the playground at the local kindergarten.

Intensity, passion and committment is what we want from all our players and coaching staff. The game is tough, life is tough and there are no prizes for being runner up. In these situations time is of the essence, got to get the message across and do it quickly in a way that sinks in.

You obviously haven't been to a kindergarten lately ... those places follow the law of the jungle!

I was disappointed the incident was public, because of the humiliation for the player involved. Thats how I see it, and I felt for Witts (didnt actually see it at the game, but on coverage afterwards). But I am also pleased about how Witts responded in the last quarter. He strikes me as a player who is not yet sure of himself, a bit tentative, maybe lacking confidence. I hope this helps to turn that around for Witts. Bucks' point about his potential is also telling. Clearly the club have big expectations; again I hope they are justified.

this thread is useless. Bucks got angry at witts because on an isolated incident in the backline where he failed to make an contest and the ball went over his back and into an open goal. This was during the 4 goal running riot. Bucks had everyone reason to do that because our big men just have to make a contest.
Honestly he should hae done that to all the players at 3/4 time. What bucks did was allright given the way we were playing, there is nothing to see here. Move along.

I'm pretty sure that Buckley (pointing to his own head) would have been saying words to the effect of "you are better than that and you need to get that into to your head." To me, that changes the nature of the situation. Seen plenty of coaches give a spray with no positivity whatsoever.

Something I want to see more of, if you can't handle what Bucks gave Witts, you can't handle football at the highest level, simple as that, Witts handled it and he will come out a better player because if it.

PS: I doubt you have the ability to 'pile drive' Buckley, Bring_Back_Brad

Given the circumstances the spray had to be public unless bucks waits until after the game which makes the spray useless. It was designed to improve his performance and it did. If witts can't handle direct feedback he is never going to make it in the afl. Given his response I would say he can and will be better for it.

You have to be impressed with the way Witts played the last quarter. If the (pretty minor) incident fired him, then it was a good thing. Who knows if it did? Not me. Any spray from a coach is demeaning to a player. If it is public then more so. Do we want them removed from the coaches, repertoire? I think not. This is a brutal game in every respect. Only the super strong succeed. We have all known players of great talent who have achieved little because they were mentally weak. They have to be able to cope with far more than we ordinary humans would accept. Witts showed that he can. More power to him.

The problem with Witts is he always seems to go to ground in just about every contest.

This is a major flaw for a big man because he effectively is out of every contest when this happens.

He needs to be stronger over the ball and hold his ground.

mate thats footy, id embrace it, hes challenging him to stand up and become the player he could be. hes inciting him. i think its awesome, loved the passion and lovedt he response

and Showing he cares for the Team. He knows he can play better and he told him that

Agree.
I love bucks, have a huge respect for him but if he had done that to me in public I would have piledriven his head in to the hallowed mcg turf 5 seconds later. I'll cop a spray but you put your hands on me like that you get slammed and you learn your lesson.
This is embarassing to our club. We are starting to look like a pack of undisciplined bullys.
When maxwell laid his hands on fasolo he should've been seriously reprimanded by the club and the afl, and he should've made a formal apology to Fas. Rather he was praised and excused, and now we got the coach man handling players cos there's a precedent that it's ok if it sparks a player in to action.
Thank god afl isn't an international sport cos we'd be a world wide embarrassment right now otherwise, just like Cameroon are.
Hope Buckley makes a formal apology to Witts.
We can't be losing our heads and turning on each other when the pressures on its a very bad look.

For Godsake-Buckley grabbed his jumper for one second and pointed his finger. It is an emotional, passionate game. Coaches from suburban/country footy to the AFL say and do things that would not be acceptable in any other work environment and everyone involved in sport understands this. I would take such a passionate outburst directed at me as the ultimate compliment. If my coach thinks I have unlimited potential and I am not fulfilling it I would be desperate to live up to his expectations. It would remind me that I am firmly in the coach's future plans for the club and that he expects me to be a major contributor to the club's success.

What a overreaction, just like the Fasolo post.

I'd like your thoughts on this, should they have had Barassi reprimanded by the VFL?

All Coaches use to do that

So, is this the Buckley humiliation we're talking about?

Well Bucks and MM did only to the Players who Deserved It.

Simon Buckley was useless. Just a Long Kick and that was it

Bah that was fine, public accountability is actually the right way if a player has agreed to standards. Witts had 5 terrible minutes that cost us the match.
