Athletes think differently to fans though. I bet if you asked Mitchell and Cotchin if they would want to win the Brownlow in this fashion they'd both probably say no. There is a precedence for this also in that the record books now show that there were no NRL premiers in 2007 and 2009 - which is an even bigger gap than not having a Brownlow winner.

While I'd love to see Mitchell and Cotchin be awarded it - I just can't see it happening.
The precedence fails because it isn't possible to determine the result of a match that was never played. The relevant precedence is Harvey brownlow in 1998 where the player with the most votes was not awarded the brownlow as he was ineligable.

I'm no psychologist but how can Hird breeze out of court as if nothing was wrong yesterday? He is one deranged sociopathic nut case.
It's quite often the case that people involved in a serious car crash have no memory if the incident. It was one hell of a wreck yesterday.

The Essendon supporters who crap on about Hird being made a scapegoat should be rounded up and sent to the moon. They don't deserve to breathe earth's oxygen. :)

That line is just laugh-out-loud brilliant.

Actually, this whole Caro article articulates the hubris accurately.

I'm not reading anything written by Caroline Wilson.

I hate Essendon's cheating, conniving ways and their morally bankrupt coaches and leadership, but that's not a reason to read an article by the gossip monger supreme.
Does she ever delete an article or does she just copy & paste every time?

Anyway, Essendon is totally broken, and I'm happy.

Now if Carlton could only go the same way ...

You mean when Alan Bond not only forgot who Paul Barry was, but where he'd hidden his millions type serious car crash?

I started laughing in Rocky IV when all the Russians started barracking for Rocky. Really corny stuff :)

Hey hey hey Rocky IV is the best movie in the franchise (i like to think so anyway). Essendon are more like Apollo Creed in IV than anything else, being cocky that they are innocent and getting smacked down.

The same players whose captain is on the record in 2011 saying how they've had their "eyes opened" at the changes in body shape after just 2 weeks of the new program that was going to make them bigger and stronger? Those poor players?

They knew what all the needles were for. The naive public keep making excuses for them though.

I agree the players knew what the needles were for, that goes without saying. They would have all understood they would make them fitter, faster and stronger. The question is, if they knew they were illegal, and if not, why not?

I have never been a great admirer of the Essendon FC, it tells a lot about a club's character when they have a shyster like Sheedy at the helm for 27 years. I just cannot believe a club can place the welfare of it's own players at risk by subjecting them to substances that had never been tested for human consumption, then allowed their players to go for 18 months with threats of suspension hanging delicately over their heads like the sword of Damocles, all in the name of protecting one sick and sorry person.

I know it's easy to say this, but if my club ever does anything like this, I would return my membership and throw all my Hawthorn stuff in the bin. It's quite simply a disgusting way for a club to conduct itself, and it deserves every condemnation that comes its way. I would like to thank Mr Middleton for finally adding some sanity into this whole affair, it was about time we got down to the real issue. We've wasted 18 months, but now it's time for business.

How glad are the afl that this is essendon. Imagine the cheque they'd have to write for middleton if this involved the swans.

There is still one thing above all others that annoys me with this whole thing.

The kids that got drafted last year and not even ONE parent with enough balls to stand up and say NO my child will not be playing for these drug injecting scabs. The afl can huff and puff as much as they like but I am pretty sure that any parent who doesn't want their child playing at this corrupt drug riddled scab of a place would also have no problems at court.

Will be interesting to see if any parent, or players from other clubs for that matter, just straight out says NO.

This would be the icing, if no kids from the draft could be FORCED to go there simply by having the number in front of their name read off the draft sheet.

As for trading Ryder (or any of their players), for what, which player from another club would be dumb enough to ever accept such a trade. This little fact seems to be forgotten (esp by scum supporters) that both players in the trade have to agree, so they are back to trading for draft picks, well it'll only take one parent to stand up and say NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO and they are completely finished.

The thing I enjoyed about listening to Middleton yesterday was that he was so cut and dry in his deliverance of the outcomes that he has left them very little wiggle room for a challenge and with a very pointed "you wasted so much of my time" viewpoint
I thoroughly enjoyed it

The problem with that is kids don't get drafted, adults do. These players are old enough to make their own decisions, they shouldn't need mummy and daddy watching over everything they do.

Maybe not, but you can always have a *. ;)

What I'm saying is, if all Essendon players are found guilty, then their brownlow votes don't count. Meaning anyone who was beneath them in the individual vote count, would take their place. It'd mean the order would change, Mitchell and Cotchin may not necessarily be 2nd if you did that. That's why I think they won't be awarded a Brownlow, there'd just be a nice fat * next to Jobe Watson.
It won't affect the finishing positions. It's the same as if a player is rubbed out by the MRP. His votes get tallied, but he can't win.

Agreed. He has made it clear to Essendon that the system will not tolerate any more of their garbage. Essendon have been strutting around playing big dick businessman and suddenly they've received a massive shot of reality. For the first time in Essendon eyes, the real threat of serious penalties are apparent to them, and they are now starting to realize how a little bit of cooperation from day 1 would have made their penance less severe.

You really have to question the ability of some of the boys at the top at that club. Such an amateur production. Oh, how I'd love to be a fly on the wall at their next executive meeting .... knives out for Mr Hird at long last?

What world do you live in?

A skinny 17yr or 18yr old is going to stand up to the afl commission, and a club, plus their managers who really make the decisions without ANY input from their parents, yea right.

Well, when I was 18, I didn't need mummy and daddy wiping my arse any more. I was an adult and took on adult responsibilities. I found employment without my parents, I took on a mortgage without my parents, and I've conducted all my business affairs without them as well. THAT'S the world I live in, but then again I grew up in a harder world where there were less sooks than there are today.

While I agree that most 17-18 year olds are mature enough to make sensible decisions, footballers are not necessarily the smartest kids around. But I would have expected ALL of them to ask: "we've had 35 injections in some warehouse away from the club without a doctor present, is there something odd going on?"
"And why did we have to sign consent forms?"

And why did several players refuse injections? Don't say they were scared of needles, that's just an excuse.

And the most important question: the players who have had the injections have strength/stamina/recovery advantages over the rest of the competition. Why should they still be allowed to continue playing?

Have put a like to your post - re highlight - think Zacca used it as an excuse to play fair.
