Apologies if this stuff has been done to death, but I am about 50 pages behind on this thread and, if I'm being honest, I'm never going to read those 50 ;-)

There has been some interesting analysis this week of the Swans' list and how it has been put together. Basically, they have very few low draft picks but have managed to find top players from high picks, trading and the rookie list. Some of the rookies in particular are great finds.

Hawks aren't too different, but they did bottom out to get Roughead, Rioli, Franklin and Hodge...

Here is Michael Voss from The Age today

Their list has evolved considerably and unconventionally and the grand final team will include seven ex-Swans rookies - Harry Cunningham, Heath Grundy, Jake Lloyd, Mike Pyke, Dane Rampe and All-Australians Kieren Jack and Nick Smith.

Five players were originally taken at 30-plus in the draft - Dan Hannebery (30), Nick Malceski (64), Luke Parker (40), Sam Reid (38) and Adam Goodes (43). Only Jarrad McVeigh (5), Gary Rohan (6) and Lewis Jetta (14) were Swans first-round picks.

Four players were snared via trades from other clubs - Rhyce Shaw, Josh Kennedy, Ted Richards and Ben McGlynn (another ex-rookie).

It gives me fresh hope.

And then there was Buddy and Tippet.

2 out of their best 3 are from Hawks...Franklin and JPK. Wouldn't be their this week without those 2 imo.

Thanks, Moggy- I found that an interesting read. Haven't seen it here before so you're all good!! :)

Agreed, but doesn't that build on the same point? i.e. You don't need to bottom out for low draft picks.

I know what you're saying yes you can, but I believe it's a bit more difficult and is a larger gamble.

Hawks got buddy from bottoming out though, Kennedy was through F/S and Selwood was also a low pick.

I attribute a bucketload of our success to the F/S we had.

Seriously can't believe that Hawthorn brought Cyril in.
Hasn't played for 3 months will have no match fitness Clarkson taking a massive risk on a name player over a player in Simpkin who has shown until the PF that he is ideally suited to the sub role.

REIGNING champion Patrick Dangerfield will not participate in this year's 13CABS Grand Final sprint, paving the way for a new winner to be crowned.
Dangerfield, who has held the title for the past three years, has decided not to participate this year, with All Australian teammate Brodie Smith chosen as his replacement.

Geelong's Jordan Murdoch is likely to start as favourite for the event this year, having posted one of the fastest ever 20m sprint times at the AFL Combine – stopping the clock at 2.86 seconds.

2014 Grand Final Sprint participants

Adelaide
Brodie Smith
BrisbaneLions Daniel McStay
Carlton Kane Lucas
Collingwood Ben Kennedy
Essendon Patrick Ambrose
Fremantle Zac Dawson
Geelong Jordan Murdoch
Gold Coast Jarred Ellis
GWS Adam Tomlinson
Hawthorn Billy Hartung
Kangaroos Luke McDonald
Melbourne Jayden Hunt
Port Adelaide Andrew Moore
Richmond Bachar Houli
St Kilda Clint Jones
Sydney Swans Daniel Robinson
West Coast Will Schofield
Western Bulldogs Jason Tutt

Murder's probably only got the gig because Dawson is currently injured. :P

Read somewhere on BF that of the last 8 encounters between Hawthorn and Sydney, Hawthorn have a 5-3 record. The 5 games they won, Cyril wasn't playing, but he was playing in the 3 they lost.

Here's hoping that record continues should he actually run out onto the ground on Saturday.

lol- just checked poor Thyril's stats- the last time he played in a winning team against Sydney was in the 2011 SF. :) I like it. May his pattern of losses against Sydney continue!!

(what's the bet that the club will find out about him being the jinx and he'll be out in a late change on Saturday?)

Cyril to be the reverse Joffa and lose two Grand Finals in a week;)

It does, you need a lot of thing to go right in an 18 team comp though and access to a couple of A grade + forwards is a huge bonus, similar to our fortune with Father/Sons in recent times, these sort of occurrences can make all the difference.

I guess it is more about the way the Swans have built their list than the Hawks.
Rampey, Smith and others via Rookie. Malceski (64), Parker (40), that's some good recruiting right there.

Of course, Franklin and Tippet were via trade - but they had the balls to make those deals happen. BTW, I don't think the COLA made much difference in those cases.

On the Father/Sons... I agree completely.

Just look at our forward half today. Where would we be without Hawkins - and where does the next one come from?

Pure desperation, but I guess one of his mini cameos could be enough. It also gives the great opportunity to play the drinking game Where's Cyril. Rules are you have to continuously drink until he is spotted, then you get a break. Expect to be dead by quarter time.

Might be interesting if he starts as the sub.

Smacks of a bit of desperation to me. I'm beginning to think the game won't be close.

I reckon Sydney would be quite happy to have Rioli playing too.

No doubt, his overall crappy statistics are even crappier against Sydney, Hawthorn just gave them a free hit.

As weird as it sounds, Cyril playing probably balances out the fact Hawthorn's number 1 and 2 fans in Stevic and Nicholls are umpiring.
