I imagine Hird would sue for irrevocable loss of future income on the basis that his ability to earn anything near the amount he is on in the future is shot to pieces. This, of course, would be a huge amount of money. He does have strong legal people on his side.

Purely hypothetical but could be the reason the board stalled today. Despite Hird's players first rhetoric I personally feel that his fight has been as much about his future knowing that if he loses this he will never be able to earn anywhere near the money he is on. This is a big hit on a bloke with big aspirations and lifestyle choices. I also think this is why Mrs Hird has also been very prominent in all this. They are threatened meaning they could be "banished" to a middle class lifestyle. I saw it happen to a friend a few years back when his wealth and lifestyle were threatened. You would be amazed at what a person you thought you knew is capable of and how many relationships they are prepared to destroy in the process.

I don't know about that. The Essendon Board is spineless. Their CEO is an unashamed Hird fanatic, that's how he got the job in the first place. Only at Essendon could a paid employee of the club blatantly disregard the directions of their employer and not be sacked.

They may as well announce the change of club name to James Hird Football Club, appoint Hird as President as well as Coach, but retain the jellyfish of a board who won't dare to question anything Hird does.

Also, I think the time has come for the AFL to grow some balls and, with the support of the other 17 clubs, start issuing some ultimatums to Essendon. Surely we cannot just allow the competition to roll on year after year with Essendon in and out of the courtroom. It is beyond a freaking joke.

Legal academic interviewed on the radio (PM program on ABC) said very unlikely that ASADA would proceed while the Federal Court was underway. Also indicated it would be very 'unwise' for the Board to terminate Hird while the proceedings were being heard, potentially opens them up to litigation. Probably the best they can do is to suspend him on full pay pending the hearing, and sack him once its over (regardless of the outcome).

- I almost feel sorry for Essendon, Bomber said he'll only stay if he's senior coach - their first two choices for the gig are only out for themselves.
