one flew over the cuckoo's nest
Almost the perfect film for mine, the ending was superb. Jack Nicholson was mostly hilarious yet still nailed the more mellow moments, you really couldn't tell if he was clinically insane or not in the end. All the supporting characters were portrayed very well too.

Angel on My Shoulder (1946)
Directed by Archie Mayo, noted for several movies including "A Night in Casablanca" & "The Petrified Forest". He easily made the transition from silents to the talkies, but his reputation with many stars, & he worked with a lot of them, was very unfavourable. The music was created by Dimitri Tiomkin, so it's obvious this was very much a major production.
Starring the great Paul Muni, Claude Rains & Anne Baxter.
The story is familiar for today's audiences, but in 1946 ... I'm not so sure. A big time gangster Eddie Kagle (Muni) is collected from the state pen, once his time was served, by his best pal who was running thing while he was locked up. It seems though the pal liked running things, so the ride home really was one-way, the pal shot & killed the boss. This is the movies though, so Eddie is now seen on his way to hell, but he's not happy with that because there is so much he still wants to do in the land of the living.
The Devil, "Nick" (Claude Rains), is always up for a deal when he can see a profit by way of souls to be had, so he deals with Eddie, allowing his soul to inhabit his look-a-like on Earth to get on with the dirty deeds. His look-a-like is a clean living pillar of society Judge Parker who is standing for state election. Here's the rub, the Judge was very successful at reforming criminals and hence keeping them out of the clutches of the Devil/Nick, the plan & motives have become obvious.
Eddie in the Judge's body starts out to try to continue his evils ways, but with the help of Barbara Foster, his fiance (Anne Baxter), his bad deeds turn out to have good conclusions. All the time Nick is in the background trying to guide the Eddie/Judge on the ways to do evil. But he's no match for the forces of good and maybe there is another force at work from above wanting things to turn out great ... at least Nick begins to think so.
For all his efforts, for all Eddie/Judge tries to do, Nick does not get a single extra soul ... plus it looks like he might lose Eddie's in a horrible twist for Nick. However Eddie has grown to like being good, so he makes the ultimate sacrifice for the Judge & Barbara to have long, happy and successfully "good" lives. The sacrifice being Eddie accompany s Nick back to hell & to remain there ... he does so with a smile.
This is not a well known movie, but it is well worth seeking out & watching. I give it 7.5/10

Boyhood
I liked it enough, but in some respects it was a bit boring, as if not enough effort was put into the screenplay to create a purpose or conflict for the protagonist. It was almost like real life in that sense, and it really seemed to just mosey along.
It was a good, light hearted coming of age story, but in some ways it was hard to see if Mason did really come of age because I'm not sure what he was striving for or what obstacles he had to overcome. Ok, some of the obstacles are pretty clear, but the audience seems to get little insight into how he deals with them, its almost as if he would be the same whether those things happened or not
His sister at least seems to confont this stuff, Mason remains somewhat aloof toward the audience i felt. Perhaps that is just his character. So again, that makes the film realistic, if lacking in drama somewhat.
Patricia Arquette's character was probably the most interesting and best performed in my opinion. Ethan Hawke scenes were good too, he kind of provided a bit coaching for the kids growing up and also somwhat ironically some stability in their lives.

I think that final line about moments seizing us instead if us seizing moments sums up the approach to the narrative quite well in that sense. So at least there is some consistency there.

A masterpiece, one of only three movies to receive the top 5 oscars best actor, actress, picture, screenplay and director.
The acting is amazing, I have not read the book but if I had the script in my hand there would be parts where I'd be concerned about the actor's ability to make it ring true. But boy do they succeed.
I like how it explores the whole concept of sanity and it is not too hard to draw comparisons to what we face in our everyday lives.
Not often mentioned but there is also a reasonably strong misogynistic undercurrent to this story. The only female characters portrayed in a positive light are the hookers. Ratched is obviously a monster, but the backstory regarding Cheif's wife, along with Billy Bibbet's experiences are hardly flattering. At times you get the feeling the reason these men are crazy and suffering is because of women.

Saw this yesterday aswell and was absolutely glued to the screen. JK Simmons was absolutely immense and the final 15 minutes or so was some of the most intense film I've seen. Miles Teller is also a superb young actor. Will do big things. 5/5

Simmons has to be a sure thing for an Oscar nom. A nom at the very least! Teller is so good he held his own in their scenes together.
Amazing coverage of the band/musos playing. Usually this is pretty pedestrian stuff. Nice cutting, too.
Best film I've seen this year (with the awards season rush to come.)

Yeah, that was certainly one of my favourite film finales.
Whilst it's a character comparable to Simmons' earlier work in many ways (that trademark deadpan hilarity and menace), he is a deserving frontrunner for the Supp. Oscar at this stage.
I'm already fairly content with my top 10 for 2014, and we still have the awards rush to come. Also seeing Interstellar, Nightcrawler and Mr. Turner this week. I'm a massive Leigh fan, so I expect that to be right up my alley as well.

Have you seen The Lunchbox and Ida yet? Two of my top three i've viewed this year. Not sure if they're 2013 or 2014 tho.

Release for me is usually based on release date in country of origin (although if I personally happened to see a film at a film festival in 2013 sort of thing, I'm not going to call it 2014). I find that is usually the most stable way of doing it.
It's a tricky thing. I count films like The Congress and Princess Kaguya as 2013, whereas I classify Nymphomaniac, Tracks and Starred Up as 2014. Everyone seems to have a little difference here and there, and there are no inflexibly steadfast rules, whatever feels right regarding a particular film. Everyone has slightly different rules. Obviously a lot of Australians will relate to a lot of the 2013 Oscar race films as 2014 films.
I currently have Ida booked with the library. I remember some friends saw it at TIFF in 2013, and was also released in Poland in 2013, so I'd personally consider it 2013. I have been meaning to check out The Lunchbox as well. So many films coming out on disc at the moment, need to finally get around to Babadook, Rover, Frank and Edge of Tomorrow as well. They were all released around the time of the World Cup from memory, ended up missing them all at cinemas.

Interesting observation. It does make a lot of sense when you also consider McMurphy got indicted for statutory rape and Harding was institutionalised for marital problems. Will have to watch it again, so many story arcs I didn't notice.

Have seen it before a while ago but this was the first time I watched it fully since gaining an understanding as to what the hell is going on in this movie. Screened at The Astor in Melbourne tonight, was great to check out on the big screen and in a theatre with such great acoustics, Lynch films are always a visual and aural delight. The Club Silencio scene and Rebekah Del Rio's rendition of Llorando resonating in the theatre was worth the price of admission alone.

Watched The Best Offer two nights ago. A mate told me about it but I told him id never watch it so he told me the ending. Still quite enjoyed it and paid a bit more attention trying to work out if you can pick the ending but they don't really give it away. Quite enjoyed it.
