I Saw the Devil - slowly working my way through djrossie's Korea list, and had to comment on this one - 'brutal' doesn't really cover it & theprobably the most painful movie moment I have witnessed, Min-sik Choi is one great actor - 8/10achilles severing
American Psycho
Uh yeah. Me and this movie did not connect at any point whatsoever. Now, I'll preface this by saying, I'm sure a lot of people would like it, and that after reading an explanation of the movie, there were a few elements that I missed that do make this movie a great character study of Patrick Bateman in a lifestyle of consumerism.
But..... I still hated it. I dunno, from what I can gather, the appeal of this movie is to highlight how ****** up everyone is, in this wall street lifestyle, where vanity, greed and selfishness is at the most prioritised agenda. But that's no surprise to me, nor does it have any relevance to me whatsoever. Maybe it's because I live in Australia? Maybe because this movie was made in 2000? But I found myself thinking that most of the reactions, dialogue and actions made by the characters in this movie were.... exaggerated or a delusion. And, although I definitely did not expect it, it didn't surprise me.
The most discussed topic about this movie, is whether the murders were real or was it all made up in his head. I've read a few things up on it, and yes, they are real, but it is made to seem like they aren't because this life that Patrick Bateman lives in, is filled with people who are too self obsessed to notice.
Thinking back, this does make sense in a few particular scenes, and I think if I had realised this while watching the movie, then I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more.

one flew over the cuckoo's nest
Almost the perfect film for mine, the ending was superb. Jack Nicholson was mostly hilarious yet still nailed the more mellow moments, you really couldn't tell if he was clinically insane or not in the end. All the supporting characters were portrayed very well too.

Saw this yesterday aswell and was absolutely glued to the screen. JK Simmons was absolutely immense and the final 15 minutes or so was some of the most intense film I've seen. Miles Teller is also a superb young actor. Will do big things. 5/5Whiplash
So good I went straight out and bought a drum kit.
And I don't even play.

Have you seen The Lunchbox and Ida yet? Two of my top three i've viewed this year. Not sure if they're 2013 or 2014 tho.I'm already fairly content with my top 10 for 2014, and we still have the awards rush to come. Also seeing Interstellar, Nightcrawler and Mr. Turner this week. I'm a massive Leigh fan, so I expect that to be right up my alley as well.
Not often mentioned but there is also a reasonably strong misogynistic undercurrent to this story. The only female characters portrayed in a positive light are the hookers. Ratched is obviously a monster, but the backstory regarding Cheif's wife, along with Billy Bibbet's experiences are hardly flattering. At times you get the feeling the reason these men are crazy and suffering is because of women.
Sin city 2.
I'm sure it's been asked but what was the point of jgl?
Apart from that I enjoyed it, not a patch on the first tho
