Ched Evans has been made a poster-boy for society's fallacious belief that we can somehow magically clean up this most deep-seated and widespread problem by focusing on a few high-profile perpetrators. How this will be accomplished by a moral bandwagon scape-goating one man and hounding him to the ends of the earth? In other words, how long must Evans receive supplementary punishment by self-appointed moral crusaders? He only has one life skill and means of self-support, and (given that the crime & punishment system has failed from top to bottom) should have some prospect of practising it instead of being driven underground. He is either a free man or he is not. I am obviously not minimizing this crime and I am no friend of Mr. Evans: I am personally acquainted with far too many victims and near-victims.

The hidden hypocrisy of some of his tormentors would be quite shocking were it revealed: there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that some of them have gotten away scot free with assaults worse than that of this footballer. It is abject institutional failure that is far more damaging and more in need of rectifying.

Oh, and come down very very hard on the twitter assaulters revictimizing the young woman, instead of fining footballers for their careless inanities.

An excellent article. The law is the problem imo. Once you have served your time, you should be allowed to return to work.

Bony is a decent player but that is a hell of a lot of money for him. Swansea will be happy though, 250% profit on their initial investment in just 18 months is not bad going.

we get 25 mil guaranteed at the end of the season for negredo. he's the leading goalscorer in the prem for 2014. if he can score aplenty for a midtable side, him getting stuff at his feet from silva and nasri, plus crosses from navas, he should take his game to another level if he wants to

he's a better player than dzeko. he's brilliant with his feet for his size, he's deceptively quick and great in the air. play him with kun, silva and nasri and there should be goals galore.

I didnt realise until yesterday that Marlon King was at Sheffield United last season, convicted of sexual assault, assault causing actual bodily harm, numerous other offences including theft and drink driving, two arrests in the months before signing for dangerous driving that caused injury. One of which he is currently serving 18 months for.

But no 130k petitions, no threats to withdraw names from stands, no celebrity supporter outrage, no politicians getting involved.

I'm a bit fascinated by this, is it just the lack of contrition? He maintains his innocence and a forced apology doesnt really mean anything in my book.

When then dust is settled on this I think the FA need to set some clear guidelines.

Oh yeah absolutely no doubt he's a decent player. I don't buy this garbage that midtable club = midtable player. Talent is talent regardless of where you find them. I just think that 2 years ago he probably would have only sold for £20m.

To be honest though I think fees like that should be expected nowadays. The new EPL TV deal has ballooned club revenues and with it accelerated the price index of players being purchased by English clubs, and the better the player the greater the inflation.
