David Armitage 4th in the AFL

Jack Steven 1st in the AFL
Maverick Weller 14th in the AFL

Hitouts
Billy Longer 4th in the AFL

Goals
Josh Bruce equal 3rd in the AFL

Bruce is out right second above Buddy and with only Kennedy above him.

St.Kilda's Time in Front is 50%. So we have been in the contest in all games, just fall away in the second half.

What a fantastic first post. That number would have to be at least double most other five round samples from last year.

Another thing to consider, we generated 25 scoring shots without Nick Riewoldt and Montagna. There have been many that said we wouldn't score at all without Nick and now we have so many more avenues to goal. Lonie, Sinclair, Billings, Dunstan, even Roberton have all scored multiple goals. That's not even mentioning Josh Bruce. Or David Armitage, who has been kicking a couple a game.

And Kennedy needs elbow surgery that will put him out for the rest of the season. And Bruce for Coleman is still paying $41 ...

There would be worse things to do than chuck a fiver on that. Hawkins doesn't seem right and Cloke seems to be his usual inaccurate self. Just need Buddy to do a knee and he is looking a chance. Thinking about other forwards who could challenge. Schultz is probably a similar type to Bruce. Then Cameron who is out of form and another newbie to the scene in Mc Carthy. Then a plethora of small forwards who probably won't really challenge. Richmond seem to not play Riewoldt close enough to goal to get another crack at it too.

End of Round 6:

Armitage is #1 in disposals, and #1 in Fantasy points (ave 121.5).
Steven is #2 in tackles, and #3 in Fantasy points (ave 115.8).
Longer is equal #2 for hitouts.
Bruce is still equal #4 in the Coleman.

Some interesting stats I've come across over the past week or so, some good some bad.

  • We are 1st for clambers per game. IE. we concede the most.
  • were 5th in the league for contested possessions but still -4 per game.
  • I don't particularly rate DE% as a stat especially because we are playing more contested than a lot of other teams! but we go at 71.4 which puts us 12th. Dockers are #1 at 78.7.
  • We don't go inside 50 nearly enough. 15th with 47.8 a game. Hawks average over 60.
  • Despite this we are 8th in marks inside 50 with 11.8.
  • We concede way too many inside 50s. Around 60 a game. This makes it so hard for our defenders.
  • Steven averages the second most tackles per game out of players that have played every week. Averaging nearly 7. Welled also averages 7.
  • Sinclair and Steven both have 6 goal assists each. Cyril has the most with 10.
  • Bruce is 8th in the AFL for contested marks. He has 12. Hooker (extra game) has 15. To go along with this, he is also 5th for marks inside fifty, quite an effort.
  • Dempster, Bruce, Fisher, Hickey, Riewoldt all average over 90% TOG.
  • Out of the rising star candidates this year, Lonie has the 7th most tackles.
  • Sinclair is equal top when it comes to goal assists.
  • Lonie, at times tries for a bit much. This shows with his total of 14 clangers. Armitage has had 27.
  • Armos spread has improved significantly. Getting more than 20 of his disposals in uncontested situations. He is definitely an inside/outside player now.
  • Roberton has been a welcome addition back to the team after a positive debut year with us. Statistically he's performing slightly better than 2013. More tackles and slightly more of the ball. Albeit slightly higher up the ground. He's a good kick, goes at 78.2% and barely ever completely burns it. He's only 23.
  • Schneider tested us against Essendon, but he's had a good season. He's kicked 3 goals, given 5 off. Winning a lot more of the ball than he ever has previously and averaging over 4 tackles and 3 clearances.

Oh yeh and despite people saying that Nick hasn't been very good thus far this year he is putting up some exceptional stats.

Off practically no pre-season and a family tragedy...

Averaging second most marks in the league, kicked 4 goals and given off 3, finding as much of the ball as he ever has and still taking multiple marks inside fifty.

He isn't at his best, I'll admit, but it just shows how much everyone expects from Nick.

Oh and also, just for fun -

Jack Billings - 20.2 touches, 7.2 contested, 13 uncontested 5 marks, 1.4'goals, 3 tackles, 68.3%DE, 4.0 inside fifties, 0.6 Goal assists

Bontempelli - 20.8 touches, 11.8 contested, 9 uncontested, 2.4 marks, 0.8 goals, 7.4 tackles, 58.7%DE, 1.0 goal assists, 5.8 inside fifties.

Obviously they play very different roles with Bonts getting a lot more midfield minutes than Jack, but still nice to compare all the same.

Jack finally getting some credit for his good start to the year.

With nine of the top ten goal kickers having already played this weekend, Bruce is sitting second on the Coleman, with 23 goals, 3 behind Eddie Betts.

Armitage is on 232 disposals, nearly 40 more than anybody else in the League.

It's interesting how high some of our stats are. These aren't perfect metrics, and some of these statistics are higher because we are defending so much, but in general they are interesting numbers.

- We're 11th for total disposals above Geelong, Western Bulldogs, and Collingwood.

- We're 6th for contested possessions averaging 139.4, just behind the Bulldogs 134.9 a team who has been considered to put on great pressure in the contest.

- In Disposal Efficiency we are 11th, which is a lot better than what I thought it was going to be. We are above Adelaide, Collingwood, and the other bottom teams and just behind Sydney. Again, not a perfect rubric, but it gives a mild indication at least.

- We are 9th for total marks taken and 6th for contested marks. Averaging more than North Melbourne, Richmond, Sydney, Bulldogs, and other bottom teams.

- We're 6th for average hitouts, but 17th for total clearances and 12th for centre clearances.

- 9th in average and total tackles.

- We've kicked more goals than Port Adelaide, Geelong, Essendon, and the other bottom teams.

- We're 6th for goal accuracy above Hawthorn, Port, Sydney, GWS, Collingwood, and Essendon.

- We're 2nd in rebound 50's. Again, you can say that this is a result of having to rebound more often than a better team, but it does indicate style of play particularly when Port are the only team ahead of us.

- We're 12th for inside 50's.

- 7th for marks inside 50.

- 1st for clangers, but Sydney are gaining on us fast.

- I'm really not involved with it so I have no idea how to interpret this, but we are 9th for AFL fantasy points as well.

Bruce in depth (averages);

12.4 disposals
5.6 marks
3.3 goals
1.1 behinds
3 tackles
2.4 contested marks
3.6 marks inside 50

------

23 goals has him fourth in the Coleman, leader has 27.

2nd in the AFL for contested marks with 17, Fyfe has 18.

25 marks inside 50 has him equal third - 5 behind the leader.

I think his start to the season has been underrated.

Comparing him to franklin

17 touches, 5 marks, 2.9 goals, 3.3 tackles, 1.1 contested Mark, 4 marks inside fifty.

Bruce is going at elite levels right now!

Such an awesome surprise.

His games since we've moved him into the forward line.

2014
Round 18 v Fremantle: 6 disposals, 4 marks, 0 goals - played as a DECOY, allowed Roo to kick 4 and Stanley 3

Round 19 vs Gold Coast:
11 disposals, 6 marks, 3 goals, 1 behind

Round 20 vs Bulldogs:
9 disposals, 2 marks, 1 goal - 53% game time. Can't remember, he got injured didnt he?

-

2015:

Round 1 vs GWS:
15 disposals, 5 marks, 2 goals, 2 behinds

Round 2 vs Gold Coast
14 disposals, 8 marks, 6 goals, 1 behind

Round 3 vs Collingwood
held well, we played shite take away first quarter
3 disposals, 2 marks, 2 goals

Round 4 vs Carlton:
13 disposals, 3 marks, 2 goals

Round 5 vs Essendon:
17 disposals, 6 marks, 5 goals, 1 behind

Round 6 vs Bulldogs
10 disposals, 3 marks, 1 goal, 3 behinds and Dunstan kicked a goal from his free kick (advantage)

Round 7 vs Adelaide:
15 disposals, 12 marks, 5 goals, 1 behind

Round 8 vs West Coast:
7 disposals, 4 marks, 2 goals.

-
Has been very good, still has massive improvement left in him.

Also on scoring, quarter goal totals compared to last year:

2014 (quarters with goals scored):

0 - 4 (4.5%)
1 - 25 (28.4%)
2 - 20 (22.7%)
3 - 20 (22.7%)
4 - 10 (11.4%)
5 - 7 (8.0%)
6 - 2 (2.3%)

2015

0 - 1 (3.1%)
1 - 5 (15.6%)
2 - 10 (31.2%)
3 - 5 (15.6%)
4 - 5 (15.6%)
5 - 3 (9.4%)
6 - 1 (3.1%)
7 - 1 (3.1%)
8 - 1 (3.1%)

So while our low quarters (0-2) are roughly the same, they are more likely to be two goal quarters than the zero or one goal quarters they were last year.
And after that everything is more productive.

And we're still averaging about 82 points after another week of double figure goals. Last year we kicked 10+ goals in a game only 50% of the time. This year it's 8 from 8.

People keep talking about our bad first quarters so I thought I'd look and see how bad they really are:

GWS - Lost by 5 points.
GC - Won by 4 points.
Pies - Won by 1 point.
Carlton - Won by 25 points.
Ess - Lost by 2 points.
Dogs - Lost by 7 points.
Crows - Tied.
WC - Lost by 37 points.
Lions - Lost by 28 points.

So we've been bad the last two weeks but very competitive the rest of the year.

What I'm happy with is that there's been a point in every one of those games where we've either been ahead, or close to that. Couldn't have said that last year.

In the GWS game we were in it until the very end, when a few bad misses killed us. In the Gold Coast game we obviously won. Against Collingwood we came out on fire, then probably were shown up by the better side. Against Carlton we were really good but without Nick and when Paddy got subbed off, we just couldn't move the ball. Against Essendon, well we should've won that. Western Bulldogs game, say no more. Adelaide was shocking due to our injuries, but we opened up fairly well. Against the Eagles we came storming back, obviously, and umpire #2 did not help us at all, but we were close in that second quarter, and even the third. And then another win vs Brisbane.

Compare that to the second half of last year, when we used to be destroyed early in games and never let back in. We are much, much better than we were last season, and it's come from our younger players lifting.

Yeah where did this first quarter myth come from? It's usually the 2nd Q's that are overwhelmingly poor

We've been pretty consistent in 3 games (GWS, GC and Essendon). We've given up poor starts in 3 games (WCE & Brisbane for the first quarter, WB for the first half) and only played one good quarter in 3 games (Collingwood, Carlton and Adelaide).

The only pattern here is inconsistency.
