Emre Can picking up some rave reviews after another very good game for Germany U21 in a 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic which sends the Germans through to the semi finals of the U21 Euros. At this stage he's on track to be named in the team of the tournament alongside Portugal's Carvalho in midfield.
Nedved on German TV on whom he would choose for Juve from German U21: "That's very easy. It would be Emre Can. He has basically everything."
@UEFAUnder21: Denmark & Bayern Munich midfielder Højbjerg on Emre Can: "He's a sublime footballer and there is nothing he can't do." #U21EURO
Germany U21 Coach Hurst Hrubesch: "He's the player who will seize the game and set the tone"

From what I've seen on Youtube with Hoffenheim, Firmino isn't the sort of confident finisher that suggests he will regularly play #9. Sterling was only used there due to a lack of other options and while Firmino looks like an upgrade for his passing and thinking (unsurprising given his extra years) he doesn't thump them in how you'd like.

And then I saw this 'un:

So since this last squad depth chart I posted there have obviously been a couple of changes:
Current.jpg

We've now sorted out a back up goalkeeper, while Firmino & Clyne look as though they're likely to be completed in the very near future. The question for me is what we do with that final key signing?

Do we look at another forward like Bacca or Aubameyang and shift Coutinho back into midfield as he did to great effect in 2013/14, or do we buy another midfielder like Kovacic or Illaramendi and keep Coutinho at the tip of the diamond?

Will City offer enough to tempt us into selling Sterling? What impact would this have on where we look to strengthen?

Either way I'm liking the way we're shaping up, plenty of options available to us and by no means are any of the bolded players I've listed below locked in to a 'best XI', if we even have one at this stage. You could just as easily have the likes of Ibe, Lallana, Firmino, Milner, Lucas or Flanagan as nominal 'starters' which puts us in a great position as far as challenging on all fronts goes.

have to get a quality striker like bacca, according to reports we are favourite for him, Aubameyang is more likely to go to UCL imo.
If we can get a DM (illarra), Clyne and a LB in Digne and maybe a CB to replace lovren I think we are set.

We HAVE to sign a quality striker. Goals change games and make things look better than they perhaps are.

And it's nice that you agree that we spent £25m on a squad player. ;)

This good enough? ;)

I love the internets.

So with Ayre in Chile for the Firmino deal, is there anything else he could/should be looking at whilst there?

How on Earth did the price escalate from the first rumour of 13M, to the second of 18M, then up to a whopping 29M pounds??

Alexis Sanchez was 32M FFS!

In no way am i advocating not buying him by the way.

Delighted, though I am having a quiet chuckle at no one being slightly bothered by the price. Because his name ends in o and he isn't British.
I think the majority of us are just happy we have been assertive and done this deal quickly. Too many times in the past we have lost players due to not paying the extra 3-4 million. Happy to pay the extra if it means securing a top class talent like Firmino

on what planet was he ever gonna come for under 20m?

Sanchez costs 140k / week. Firmino will start on about 50-60k / week. Also, we had to pay a 3rd party out for Firmino hence the escalation in price.

And we spent £20m on Markovic, £150k/week on Milner etc..

The best and most successful sides have multiple quality options in each position. If we want to be one of the best sides we can't be satisfied with relying on a couple of £5-10m signings to consistently perform to a high standard if our nominal starters aren't fit, we need quality and obviously that sort of quality is going to cost more.

Fortunately Lallana is of that standard and we can happily rotate he, Coutinho or Sterling through those attacking midfield positions throughout the course of the season without suffering a significant drop off in quality in that part of the field. Personally I've got no issue with Lallana or the price we paid for him (£20-25m is pretty standard going for any half decent footballer in that part of the field these days) and thought he actually had a pretty good season. Unfortunately the output of creative players like him is generally a function of the potency of the striker they're feeding. No doubt the likes of Lallana, Coutinho & Sterling were stunted this season by the lack of a legitimate goalscorer ahead of them.

Looks like we're doing our best to correct that deficiency in terms of adding quality, movement and goals in the final third this window though which is great to see. With that in mind I think I'm going to enjoy watching you eat humble pie re: Lallana next season! :D
